    1. [CARROLL] John Carroll of Beachville, Ontario, and his descendants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: suzyfrtz Surnames: CARROLL, VAN ALSTINE, PRINE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7499/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am working on the family of John Carroll of Beachville, Oxford County, Ontario. John was born about 1753 in Elizabeth Town, Essex County, New Jersey, and was living in Montgomery County, New York, in the Mohawk River Valley, before the American Revolution. He fought with the American "rebels" with General Schuyler during the Revolution. About 1800 he and his wife Mariah Van Alstine emigrated to the Thames River Valley in Oxford County, Ontario, where he settled in Beachville. John and Mariah had 11 children: Isaac, Abraham, John (killed in the War of 1812), Henry, Jacob, William, James, Cornelius, Daniel, Gertrude (Ingersoll) and Nancy (Fuller.) All remained in Oxford County, particularly Oxford Townships and Zorra, and the towns of Ingersoll and Woodstock, with the exception of Abraham who lived at one time in London, Middlesex Co., Ontario; Nancy Carroll Fuller later emigrated to St. Clair County, Michigan. It is difficult to sort through the children and grandchildren, particularly when most have the same given names. There are a few anamolies in my research; particularly Alpheus, supposed son of Jacob and Rhoda (Fuller) but who gives his parents on two marriage licenses as "Daniel and Elizabeth," and Abraham Carroll who married Mary Ann McKay and who is enumerated in the 1851 census West Oxford Township. Alpheus was a witness at that marriage. John "of Beachville" had a sister Nancy, wife of Jacob Van Alstine (Mariah's brother) who apparently emigrated from Montgomery Co. to Oxford with him; John also had a brother William, whose wife was Nancy Prine, known children William Jr. and David, also of Montgomery Co., of who nothing further is known, and I am wondering if this family came to Oxford as well, and are mixed in with the "Beachville" Carrolls, thus accounting for some "stray Carrolls". This large Carroll family were mainly Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian, and are buried in West Oxford Union, Ingersoll Rural and Beachville Cemeteries in Oxford County. There is another Carroll Family of Norwich Township, Oxford County who were Maryland Loyalists and not related, as well as some native Irish Carrolls in Woodstock, Oxford County. John's father was also John Carroll, born 1721 Dublin, Ireland, and his mother's name is not known; her place of birth is said to be Scotland. In addition to his siblings of Nancy and William, he may have had a brother David, a sea captain in Delaware, and a brother James. John Carroll of Beachville died there 15 Feb. 1855 at the age of 102 and is buried in the Ingersoll Rural Cemetery. His and his wife Mariah's tombstones are still standing and legible. I would be very happy to correspond with anyone interested in this Carroll family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I sent for Jeremiah's death cert. and it didn't tell me anything, no place of birth, just NY. No parents names either. I have been looking for 10 yrs for this person. I know who his children were and the first 4 were born in Ontario, Canada and the rest in Ill. Family search has him listed as JEREMICH CARROLL. I think sometimes he was called Jeremy. I can only find 1 census with him, wife and 4 children. The ones born in Ill., I have yet to find. I sure would like to find out WHERE in NY he was born, and who his parents were. Any advice is appreciated, I don't know where to turn next. His first son w! as named John, then Thomas, James, Edward Arthur, Jeremiah 1880. 3. It's time to try to knock down my brick wall again - Daniel H. Carroll born circa 1820 possibly in Kentucky, murdered 06 May 1851 in Lafayette; Scott; Arkansas. He married Nancy Boultinghouse circa 1840 possibly in Scott Co.; Arkansas. He had a brother, George Carroll. Children - Sarah Jane Carroll, Francis Marion Carroll, and twins, Thomas Jefferson and Mary Ellender Victoria Carroll. I have a copy of the original letter that Nancy wrote her father who had moved to Texas that recounts the murder of her husband, Daniel, as he was getting logs that he'd cut out and a man named Tumlinson rode up and shot him. Any clues about Daniel and his family would be greatly appreciated. Susan Blackmon

My gr-gr-grandfather, John McCarroll left no records that I have found. His tombstone, erected by his grandchildren, claim he was born in county Antrim. His daughter, my gr-grandmother, buried beside him, born in county Derry. They were Roman Catholic, farmers and he claimed to have once been a fisherman. They had friends named Kearney also from county Derry. The Kearney's were from the Magherafelt area. Perhaps John McC, the fisherman, paddled across Lough Neagh, married a lass and had a family in Derry before ssiling to America. I have found no ship's log for him or daughter Annastasia. She married Timothy Shanahan in 1855, in Harford county, Maryland. I currentl live about a mile from the church where they were married. Author: southard Surnames: CARROLL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7494.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I should have added that Peter Wilson Coleman made it clear in his book that he knew he did not have all the names of persons transported to the American colonies - only the ones for whom he could find records. The ship captains sometimes did not record the name of those in bondage. Many of the records had gotten wet and simply decayed. A fire at the courthouse in Dublin destroyed the rolls of manuscript with the names of many. So just because you do not find a person in the list I posted, that does not mean they might not have been brought to the colonies as a convict, a kid on the street at the time the patrol was picking up the "trouble makers", or a man who could not pay his debts. If that is how my CARROLL ancestor got to the colonies, I'm very glad the decision was made to "transport" him. Lura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: southard Surnames: CARROLL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7494.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: CARROLLS listed in the book.... "British Emigrants in Bondage 1614-1788" by Peter Wilson Coleman You will most likely have to find a copy of this book in order to understand the abbreviations listed. Please don't ask me to tell you, because I don't know. Also, you will need to compare with the ship lists to see where each sailing of a given ship originated and where it docked. You will probably never find the name of the person transported early for work in the colonies in a historical document. Those transported shortly before the Revolution may have gone to fight, or they may have finished their term of service and be listed in the first census in 1790. The children of these CARROLLS will be scattered all across the colonies by 1790, probably married with a house full of children. The earliest ones mentioned here will have grandchildren or great-grandchildren who have already scattered by 1790. It seems to me there is some duplication in the British list and the Irish list, but there were many with the same names - perhaps on the same ships. Good luck. I hope we can all find some ancestors. If I find that my ancestors were less than perfect, that doesn't change who they helped ME to become. Lura .................................................
