Author: southard Surnames: CARROLL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7494.4.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: One of the news articles for which I gave the URL in my Nov. 15 query says, "Officials are consulting survivors of the programme so that a statement can be made in the new year." Let's watch the news from England after the first of the year. If someone sees that the formal apology has been made, then Post it to the message board. I don't know if they will publish any lists of those transported or not. Peter Wilson Coleman has spent many years trying to find the names of all who were shipped to America. My May 26, 2009 query above lists the CARROLLS I found on a CD containing the books of Mr. Coleman which I purchased from AncestorStuff.com. I don't think these were children however. Some were prisoners and some were indentured for a period of time to the person who paid their transportation to the colonies. In a sense they became slaves for an agreed period of time. Legal papers were recorded in court for that indenture. You will see on the list that there were many runaways who didn't fulfill the agreement. The sentence for some of the prisoners was that they could never return to the British Isles. I see that a Thomas Carroll stole a cow in County Cork, Ire. in 1757 and was transported for life. But he returned to Ire. and was executed in 1767. The population had grown to more than those small countries could feed. Many of the people turned to stealing what they could to feed their families. Apparently that is what a lot of the children were doing on the streets... just stealing whatever they could find to steal. I believe the king approved at one time for 100 to be taken from the streets of London, and it didn't take long to get them. It sounds horrible, but I am personally glad it happened.... if that is how any of my ancestors got here. I'm thankful this week of Thanksgiving to live in this USA. The Prime Minister in Australia has already apologized there. Apparently a lot of those children were abused. I think in the N. Am. colonies they probably just had to work. Hard physical work with nourishing food is just what the doctor wants now for all of us. I think whatever their conditions in the colonies was better than poverty on the streets in London. Hi Faye, Perhaps you were writing about the posting I did at http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7580/mb.ashx The two Carroll websites showing the results are at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/carroll/default.aspx?section=yresults Click on the other links on the left. Also http://www.carrollroots.com/carrollfamilydnavalues.pdf Use the ZOOM feature to enlarge the chart to read it. Place an order here http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?code=F25174&Group=Carroll Right now the Y-DNA37 and the Y-DNA67 are the Best Buys on sale for testing the Carroll Surname. As I have said before, get the Y-DNA67 if possible. I believe the 12 marker test is of very little value, and the 25 marker is still not enough to find common ancestors. Our Sampson/Duplin County, NC Carrolls would not have learned as much as we have, if we hadn't found the NULL value at DYS 425. We would not have known that if we had only tested to 37 markers. That one anomaly helps set us apart, and I think it MAY help tie us to the Scots-Irish of Northeast Ireland. Maybe not! It's too early to say for sure. I hope you will be able to get the test for your family. I did find an SSDI listing for a Elizabeth C. BREDEKAMP born 1901 and died 2002 in Middle River, Maryland but not sure if this is the same person. Also found on SSDI a Lucille PERKINSON born 1924 and died 2003 in Nottingham, Baltimore, Maryland. Henry C. CARROLL was the son of Daniel Carroll and Helen DOWLING Carroll, no dates but most likely around the 1880's. He married Hollis GROVE, no other info known. Their children were Elizabeth Ann who married a BOWERS and Caroline who married a SAMEK. No other info known on them but maybe the 1940's. Most of this I am just finding today so any information would be a great help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Prime Minister Gordon Brown will soon make a formal apology for this practice in the past. I think many of our CARROLL immigrants came to the colonies in this manner. Isn't it interesting now to realize that was the best thing for these children? In addition to the orphans and poor children who were exported by the English, they also emptied their prisons. Again, I think it proved to be a good thing. Maybe along with the apology, the English government will publish lists of those transported. Here are two articles concerning this apology.
