A few days ago I asked for information about Demcy Carrel of Duplin County, NC, whom I believed might be the father of my Alexander Carrrell. There were two men by the name of Dempsey Carroll/Carrel of the Six Runs Creek area of Duplin County, NC until 1784 when that area became Sampon County, NC. I have put together the information I have on the older man and the younger man. I see no possibility that the family that was in northern VA and then in KY could be the same Dempsey Sr. and Dempsey, Jr. of Duplin and Sampson Counties. An older Dempsey/Demey/Demcy: a.. Estimated birth date between 1690 and 1745, probably around 1725 b.. 1770 and 1778 got land grants c.. 1789 was exempted from paying poll tax because he was "an aged and infirm man" d.. 1790 a Demey AND a Demcy Carrol were listed in the US census e.. 1793 Dempsey Carrell SENIOR and his wife Martha sold land to Alexander Carrell f.. Estimated death date between 1793 and 1800 A younger Demey/Demcy, or Dempsey: a.. Was in the Revolutionary War (applied for pension in Alabama for service rendered in Duplin County, NC) b.. 1801 Alexander Carrell sold land to Dempsey Carrell JUNIOR There were several other times when a Demey/Demcy, or Dempsey was mentioned, but there was no way of knowing if it was the older man or the younger one. It is possible Demey/Demcy came into the area as a new immigrant, was born there, or moved there from another area of the colonies. My plan to search - and I ask your help: a.. Watch the ship lists. b.. Note families that have the name Dempsey as a given name c.. Watch very early families as they move about from one place to another Lura Lura C. How nice of you to offer. Do you have any record of an Alexander CARROL/CARRELL? He was married in Duplin County, NC on April 7, 1783 to Lucy Ryal. His bond was signed by Demcy Carrel. Do you have a Demcy, Demey, Demsy, Demsey, Dempsey, etc. Carel, Carle, Carrol, etc. in your files? I'll consider any spelling! Lura Lura C. I can only tell you that his daughter, Sigal Bernice Carroll, was born January 11, 1917. I do know that Sigal's children were born in the Yalobusha, Lafayette, and Calhoun County, MS area.
The name of the book is "Virginia Carrolls and Their Neighbors 1618 - 1800s" by Elizabeth Carroll Foster. I bought mine from Heritage Books when they were in my area at a Genealogy Fair. The cost was $24.50. You can find Heritage Books on the Internet also. My Benjamin Carroll was born December 25, 1753 in Orange County, NC, and died January 31, 1846. He married Nancy Peeler January 13, 1786 in Orange County, NC. He was the son of Stephen Carroll, who was born about 1733 and supposedly immigrated from Ireland with two brothers. There are lots of other Benjamins in the area of the surrounding counties. My home page is at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/t/r/Wanda-F-Strycker/ Click here: Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: User Home Pages: Wanda Faye Carroll Strycker Home Page I believe I have most of the Benjamin Carrolls listed. There are probably some that I don't have as I am still working on this. If anyone has any information on STEPHEN CARROLL above, please, please let me know. Faye Carroll Strycker

I have this book on the Virginia Carrolls and found some bits of info in there about my ancestor, BENJAMIN CARROLL, and a mention of STEPHEN CARROLL, but it was not new information. I did enjoy reading about all the Carrolls in the book knowing that some more of them are my ancestors that I haven't linked up to yet. Faye Carroll Strycker
Carroll Researchers, I was just made aware that one person on the list did not know about a book that is available on the Carrolls of Virginia. I posted the information when I had first learned about the book about a year (I think) ago. Here is the information for any others who may not be aware of it. It is available at: http://www.heritagebooks.com "Virginia Carrolls and Their Neighbors: 1618-1800s" - Elizabeth Carroll Foster. Chapters include a brief history of Ireland, a sketch of the colony of Virginia into statehood (1585-1800), some land patents and grants. Also the author provides a list of Virginia Carrolls having recorded wills or inventories, some marriages without dates and locations, Revolutionary War Pension applicants, soldiers in the Civil War, the war with Spain and the Philippine insurrection, and those found on Virginia records, 1618-1850s and beyond. This work is meant to assist research on Virginia Carrolls; however, the text and index contain hundreds of associated names, making it a valuable resource for locating ancestral names in colonial Virginia. Maps add a delightful touch to this book. 1999, 248 pp., maps, bibl., fullname index, paper, $24.50 #ZF577 Ms. Foster's book is really a compilation of her notes - not a genealogy. There are so many Carrolls it almost makes you dizzy. I wish she would hurry and publish a book on NC Carrolls! She mentioned she was aiming in that direction, but she is also working on other things. FYI, I am in no way connected to this book or it's publisher. Lura Lura C. Southard southard@interpath.com
