Sorry about the previous post under this topic. There are thirteen counties named Carroll in the U.S. according to my map software. Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio, Tennessee, and Virginia all have one. Tennessee's Carroll County was named after Governor William Carroll. I could not find who the Carroll Counties in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, and New Hampshire were named after. The rest were named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. Just thought I'd throw that bit of trivia out there. http://ccgs.westgeorgia.org/carrollhist.htm Take a look at this site listed above. I think both counties may have been named after the same man. See what you think. You may get some other replies on the list to help you there. Carroll County, MD was named after Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737-1832). I have no POPE in my Carroll database. Charles Carroll of Carrollton was born and died in MD. He only had one son, also Charles (1775-1828). He also was born and died in MD. Charles II, did have a daughter Elizabeth but she died in 1842 and married a man named TUCKER anyway. Charles II had two sons that lived to adulthood, but only one son, Charles III (1801-1862), had any daughters, and none were named Elizabeth. I have three others named Elizabeth Carroll, but they do not fit either. Questions: Carroll County, GA may just have been named after CCC and possibly neither he nor his descendants were ever there. Do you have any proof that his descendants were in GA? Can we assume that Elizabeth was born about 1828? Do you have any additional info on her husband Anderson J. POPE....born .... date and place? Siblings, parents? I have several more sources to check with, plus another person who has also done some research on Charles Carroll of Carrollton. I will work on this and get back with you. I found out why my messages were being deleted from my message board. They have upgraded and added the option of how many days the message would stay posted. That was not an option when I put the board on the first time. I have since changed the settings so that the message will stay posted the maximum amount of time allowed, 60 days. I have also added a new message board for Surname queries at my FTM web site. The same board is posted on the Surname page at Angelfire. The first board on the main page at Angelfire is; http://pluto.beseen.com/boardroom/y/44491 This is to post almost anything you wish. I have an Augustus C Carroll, born Sept 1834 in Adams or Carroll County, MS, s/o John Douglas Carroll and Rachel McGill. Augustus was in the 1900 census for Limestone County TX but not in the 1910 census. He married Catherine P Right (Wright?) about 1860 in Mississippi. She was born @ 1834 and died between the 1880 and 1900 censuses. Their children were Henry P -1861 Mary E - 1869 Robert E Lee Carroll - Jan 1871 My branch of the Carroll family frequently moved between Carroll County MS and Freestone/Limestone CO Texas. Is this the gentleman you are looking for? Has anyone found or have a Gus Carroll born about 1835 who was in Mississippi about 1880. One relative says he died about 1890, and his wife married secondly to J. R. Wakefield in 1890s. His wife was Nancy Ray who was born about 1860 in Lafayette County, Mississippi. I wonder if he could have been from Texas, as his wife and children lived in Texas for a time. Does anyone have a Gus Carroll who married a Nancy? Could be Augustus, August, or possibly John... For the past nine years, I have been posting information on Thomas Carroll, born 1870 in County Roscommon, immigrated to the US in the 1890s, last known in Ozone Park in 1938, looking for descendants. Two weeks ago, through the kindness of someone who read one of my messages somewhere, and the NYC Fire Department, I have found them!!! Just want to encourage all of you who hit dead ends, don't give up. Persistence pays........ Doris Sheehan
