A mysterious man by the name of Earl Clyde Carroll showed up in the mountains of Bedford Co., PA to work in the coal mines..circa 1929-1931. He was basically a shady person, or very private, never telling anyone much about himself. He then against her parents wishes married Mabel Showalter. He listed on his marriage licenses he was born in Memphis, TN. His listed his parents as Daniel Anderson Carroll and Gretta May Ellsworth. He bought her wedding ring in York or Lancaster, PA. He was born circa 1906-1908. He was a bootlegger and a coal miner. He refused to talk about his past or his family. Durning their short marriage he took Mable to Long Island, NY and worked for a Sawyers family. They then moved to Totz, KY and while there a baby died. His name was Ralph Gerald Carroll and he was born in Pennsylvania on May 1, 1934 and died in Totz, Ky on July 24, 1934. The funeral home was in Harlan and he was buried in Totz. They moved back to Bedford Co., PA and Earl Clyde Carroll died in April 25, 1938 of blood poisoning. Mabel never notified any of his family. Around 1950-1970 a cousin of Mabels seen an ad in some sort of newsletter that someone was looking for him. This was probably his family. Mabel never replied. His family could of been from PA or TN.... or both. He seems to have ties to Ky. Any clue to my mystery man would be greatly appreciated. He always told Mabel that he was born in Memphis but they never really lived there was just traveling when he was born. Mabel did meet some cousins in TN and all she could remeber is they lived in the south central part of the state.

Philip and Mary CARREL arrived in Jefferson County, Ohio from western Pennsylvania sometime between 1806 and 1812. By 1813 they had nine children who were John (born 1798), Mary (1801), Margaret (1802), Joseph (1804), Anthony Wayne (1806), Catherine (1807), Henry (1809), Jane (1811) and Philip Jr. (1813). Philip Carrel was killed on December 10, 1813 while in the Service of the United States (War of 1812). He died intestate and left no Will, and in 1814 his widow Mary relinquished her right to be Administrator of his Estate, whereupon the Court of Common Pleas appointed Ephraim Cellars as Administrator and John Wolf and several others as Appraisers. When Philip died in 1813 one of his sons, Anthony Wayne Carrel, who was 7-years old, was "bound out" to a tradesman and taken out of Jefferson county, probably to Licking County, Ohio where he was raised and later married Miss Balinda Root in 1826. The other eight children apparently remained with their mother until her death in 1818, and the court appointed James Terrence as guardian for five Carrel children in 1818 and 1819. The five were John, Mary, Margaret, Joseph and Catherine. Whatever happened to the three youngest children who were Henry, Jane and Philip Jr. is not known. Anthony Wayne Carrel and Balinda Root raised eight children of their own in Licking County, Ohio and they are my ancestors. After the 7-year old Anthony was separated from his brothers and sisters in 1813 and taken to another part of the state, there was apparently never any further contact between them, as Anthony never spoke of his brothers and sisters, nor even apparently knew their names. He apparently did remember his parent's names since he named his first son Philip and his first daughter Mary, and he remembered his birth date. His eight brothers and sisters may not have later remembered Anthony's name, but only that they may have had a brother once but he disappeared as a child a long ago. The separation was complete. The above information concerning Anthony's parents and siblings was unearthed recently in documents found at the Courthouse in Steubenville. I am seeking any information about the children of Philip and Mary Carrel of Jefferson County, Ohio and their descendants. They are the "lost" family of my ggg grandfather Anthony Wayne Carrel (later spelled Carroll). Thank you! Eric Olson ericbear@flash.net

I looked at 1917 and 1927 also everywhere that Maggie moved she was with Frank and Etta or the Doherty's I found a lot of them and I'm in the process of finding our Great Grandmothers other siblings. it reminds me of when we lived in Cambridge. When we moved Aunt Louise also moved. . I am so pleased that I have a link for my mothers' mother. Maggie. My main goal is to visit Ireland and bring back some Irish Soil to put it on Maggie's grave.
Are there any descendents of Stella LEE and Henry CARROLL on this list? Stella was born 17 July 1895 and died 1960. I don't know if she was born in NC or AL, but her family moved from Cherokee County NC to Addison, AL. They had a daughter named Elsie who married a John ROBERTS. Last I knew, I Elsie and John were living in Florida. After my father died I found a letter from Elsie to my family. It was written June 1962. Would like to give the letter to one of Elsie's descendents. Carol --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Thank you, Alma. There certainly are a lot of "gracious Carroll descendants", but there WERE also a lot of CARROLLs and CARRELLs that came to this continent many years ago. I wish there were better ship lists or other records of those who came on small cargo ships into the rivers and loading docks other than the main ports. Does anyone know of a good source for these ships. I am especially interested in the NC and SC area. Alma and Charles, I wonder if either of you could in any way associate your Absolum to any families in Duplin/Sampson County, NC? Family lore says Alexander CARROL/CARRELL came into the colonies near Wilmington, NC. My first knowledge of him was when he married Lucy RYAL/ROYAL in Duplin County in 1783. This would make him a likely candidate to have been a younger brother of your Absolum. Since these families usually traveled together, I thought there might be a link. Do you know of any possibility? Lura "A Merry Heart doeth good like a medicine." Proverbs 17:22 ----- Original Message ----- From: <JohnR25442@aol.com> To: <CARROLL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2001 12:23 AM Subject: [CARROLL] Re: CARROLL-D Digest V01 #79 > Mr. Duncan, > This Absalom Carroll is my ancestor; my ggrandmother being Mary Susannah > Carroll.
