The 1850 census for Jasper County, MS, has a single entry for Charlotte Carroll, age 60, from NC. Does anyone have anything connecting this lady to the John Carroll, Jr. family of Moore County, NC. I am looking for a connection, possibly mother, of John, Hulda, Agnes, Penelope, James, and Benjamin Hawkins Carroll. Benjamin Hawkins Carroll died in MS in 1859.
I will take you on my adventure to find my Irish ancestors: I was lucky enough to have my Irish immigrants buried in a nice Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati where they kept wonderful records. Everyone had to have the approval of the priest for burial and he kept the list. He recorded who their parents were and where in Ireland they were born. Our local Family History center had these records on microfilm. My great grandfather was Daniel Carroll whose parents were Thomas Carroll and Ann Meara from Tipperary County. I next turned to the Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland. I looked for a Parish in Tipperary where I could find both a Carroll and a Meara. It really wasn't quite that easy because there were more than one of each family recorded. I contacted the Tipperary North Family History Foundation and they sent me my great great grandparent's marriage information and the baptismals of their children: Thomas Carroll married Ann Meara 28 Feb. 1832 in a Townland called Kilregane in Lorrha Parish, Diocese of Killaloe. No witnesses were listed but they made it clear that they were married in the Roman Catholic Church. They had the following children: Bpt. Date Name Sponsors 16 Dec 1833 Margaret William and Mary Meara 10 Mar 1836 Mary Peter and Ellen Meara 19 Apr 1838 Patrick John and Honora Carroll 30 Jan 1840 Daniel Not Named 10 May 1846 Anne Bridget Carroll and Edward Hogan 10 Jun 1848 Thomas James and Catherine Carroll 29 Sep 1850 Michael Patrick and Bridget Carroll My next step was a stroke of luck. I reached out to a very distant relative who happened to have letters and documents concerning the family. She was not interested in genealogy and gave me everything including pictures of Thomas and Ann and two of their sons as well as a wonderful picture of my great grandfather, Daniel. From those papers I learned the parents had two more children in New York.I was also able to indentify the Cemetery where the children and most likely the parents were buried. It was St Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx. Unfortunately they did not keep good records for the earlier burials but I was able to visit the graves of John and William who were born in New York. I now knew the cast of characters and turned to the New York census records. I also knew from the 1900 census that they had immigrated in 1855. The ages on the census records were pretty messy for the Irish born children but the birthdates of John and William were quite consistent and helped identify the family when otherwise there might have been some doubt. I have since learned that the Irish really weren't too big on accurate birthdates. In the 1860 census there were the following in the family: Thomas (43) laborer; Ann (40), Margaret (21); Patrick (20); Daniel (18); Ann (12); Thomas (10); John (3); William (5/12) All born in Ireland except for John and William who were born in NY. By 1870 Patrick and Daniel were no longer with the family. Daniel had moved to Cincinnati. A letter from NY to Cincinnati indicates that Thomas "went west" and was never heard from again. I have no way of knowing if Michael was with the family when they immigated or if he left them before the 1860 census. By 1880 Thomas had died and I was able to obtain his death certificate but there was no parental information on the report. In an attempt to go back even further I obtained the 1824 Applotment Records for Lorrha Parish. I found that a Patrick Carroll was living in Annagh, Lorhha Parish (as was Thomas on the Griffith's Evaluation) renting land from a William Clark. A Dan Meara claimed land in both Lorrha and Annagh renting his Annagh property from William Clark. That is circumstantial evidence but it is good, strong evidence. Then there is the naming pattern that is so touted by American researchers. It appeared to work in this family. Finally I went to Ireland and read the Lorrah parish records at the National Library. They were hard to read and my eyes gave out before I had accomplished my mission. I would like to go back and take another crack at it. While I was in Ireland I was able to visit the grave of Daniel Meara and his wife who turned out to be Margaret Kennedy. I have left out many arduous steps but this short essay will show you that perseverance pays off. There are also some very good books for researching in Ireland that were invaluable. If you don't see anybody here that you know, good luck to you. if you do, let me hear from you.
I came across this while researching- I am not related but thought it would be of interest to a CARROLL researcher. Arizona Weekly Star (Tucson), 4 July 1878, 2:2 SUICIDE- A man named James Carroll, aged about thirty-five years, committed suicide by taking poison on Tuesday night last. He went to the drug store and purchased strychnine the same evening, telling Dr. Meyers that his room was overrun with rats and he desired to get rid of them. He proceeded immediately to Holt s saloon and called for a glass of mescal; taking the glass in his hand, and tearing off the end of the paper containing the poison, poured the mescal upon it. Lifting the glass he turned to Shorty, who was behind the bar, and said: My name is James Carroll, and I was born in Lawrence, Mass.; have a brother in - (Shorty don t remember what place,) and I am drinking deadly poison. He emptied the glass, proceeded to an adjoining room and sat down in a chair. Shorty told Marsh, who was in the saloon, what had happened, and the latter went to Dr. Meyers with the paper that had contained the poison, and was told that there was enough in the package to kill ten men. Dr. Handy was called in and applied a stomach pump, drawing quantities of the poison, but it had been in the system too long to perfect restoration. He took the poison at eight in the evening and died the following morning at two o clock. He was stone mason, and had been employed at Lee s mill for a few weeks past. He said to parties he had nothing to live for; during the war he was a captain in the 25th regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers. A Coroner s inquestwas held yesterday, which rendered a verdict according to the facts above stated, and the body was buried by the Sheriff yesterday.

This is not my family. Hopefully, he belongs to someone out there. A nice biography! Kathy Lund [from the History of Dodge County, 1880] [that's Wisconsin] Michael Carroll, farmer, Secs. 6, 5 and 7; P. O. Richwood; born in Albany, N. Y., Feb. 15, 1835; attended school in his native city; came to Emmet in 1845 with his father, Michael Carroll, who bought Government land on Sec. 7; their cabin was farther west than any in Emmet at that time, as father and son spent much time hunting in the woods, and found no settlers west of them; fearing the Indians, Mr. Carroll hauled two-inch oak plank from Watertown, with which he inclosed his frame house; this is thought to be the first frame house in the township, and stands stanch and firm at this writing; a molder by trade, Mr. C. was a very green backwoodsman, not knowing how to fell a tree properly; a native of Ireland, he came to American when 18; spent two years in New York City, then located in Albany, where he learned his trade, and married Miss Alice Fox, the mother of his only son; she dying in 1836, he married, in 1843, Miss Bridget Gill; he died Jan. 17, 1879. Michael Carroll, Jr., married Miss Mary Burke in 1855; she died Aug. 9, 1875, leaving three children--Alice, Michael and John. Mr. C. is a Democrat and a Roman Catholic, as was his father. He owns 480 acres, and a house and lot in Richwood; has a large flock of Cotswold, Southdown, Leicester and Merino sheep, beside Cloud horses, etc.

Let me explain: Thomas and Ann Meara Carroll immigrated to New York City in 1855. Prior to leaving Ireland they had a son named Michael baptized 29 Sep 1850 in Lorra Parish, Tipperary County. Clearly this Michael is too young to be the Michael you described . However, Thomas and Ann had a John J. J. born 5 Dec 1857 in New York City. Michael never appeared with them on any of the census records. I have a letter from a mortician from New York written to my great aunt describing the death of her brother, William H., and informing her also that he had left a small legacy to her. The remainder to go to the Sisters of Charity. In this same letter he mentioned a brother Tom who had "gone west" and had never been heard from again. How certain are you of your current research? I'm sure there could be more than one Tom Carroll who left NY and was never heard from again - even with a brother named John J. It is an interesting similarity in facts. John J. had been a first generation New York policeman and died after a lingering illness. My records on this family are quite complete. I would be happy to share my information if you see any link. --------------8349E34577211C0382F8822B--
Dear Listers, I have just joined the list in the hope that someone may share the same interests. My GG grandfather was William Carroll. The story goes that his father, whose name I don't yet know, was in a regiment of the British Army sent to India sometime after the Crimean War (which would also make it around the time of the Indian Mutiny, C. 1857/8). William's mother and his three sisters followed but by the time they arrived in India, their husband and father had been killed. William and his two younger sisters, Emily and Ellen stayed in India and were sent to what was effectively an orphanage school. Their mother and eldest sister, Mary Ann, returned to England. I would love to hear from anyone who may be hearing bells ringing! Best wishes, Linley in Kent, UK
