HELP with NARA My gggg grandfather Philip CARROLL died in the War of 1812. He was in the regular Army as a Private, 2nd Regiment of Artillery, Captain Stanton Shoals Company. He had enlisted 13 May 1813 for five years. This was not State Militia, but Federal U. S. Army. According to records obtained from NARA, a Bounty Land Warrant was issued, BL #715, under the Act of 16 April 1816, on 4 November 1818, with Philip named as the veteran. However, the Warrantee was James Tarrance, his nine minor childrens legal guardian. James Tarrance quickly surrendered the Bounty Land in lieu of five-years military half-pay for the children. (The children were in Ohio, the Bounty Land was in southern Illinois.) All of the above is from Philip Carrolls service and pension records at NARA. Now, however, for my genealogy, I need to find the original application for Bounty Land and/or pension. NARA says it must be mis-filed or lost. That application, whether submitted by the widow (maiden name unknown) or the guardian, may contain much genealogical information about Philip Carroll and his wife Mary, such as her maiden name, his birthplace, etc. That application may be the key that unlocks many doors, if only I could get NARA to really search for it. Or find a good researcher in Washington D.C. familiar with NARA to do it. Any advice greatly appreciated. I believe this case a little unusual because most War of 1812 pensions were granted much later, after 1852, to surviving, unmarried widows.. If the original application was submitted in Mary's maiden name, which is unknown, then I am really in trouble... Eric Olson

Janice Janice, I don't have any known connection to your CARROLLs tho I also have CARROLLs from NC, but do know a bit on Dekalb Co, ALA - as my BRUCE grandparents lived there from the 1930's til GF's death in 1954, GM's death in 1985. My sister & I along w/cousins spent our summers at our Grandparent's house on the Mountain for several years. Then after our Grandmother died, my sister & I kept their house which we used for vacations, family Thanksgivings & cousin reunions. We sold our house to another cousin, so no longer spend time up there, tho sometimes she is up there, so I might possibly ask her if she could possibly ask about something, etc. I do know Bankhead Cem, one of the older cemeteries on Lookout Mtn in that part of Dekalb Co. (where my G-parents were both bur.) Then of course Fort Payne is the county seat of Dekalb Co., AL - also home to the music group known as Alabama, many recordings of which Christmas in Dixie is one of the well known ones. If I can be of any help, would be glad to do so, as you reminded me of a very special place in our family's lives in that part of AL. Sarah H. I am still searching for the family of Earl Clyde Carroll (if he didn't change his name) His marriage licenses stated he was born in TN. He listed his parents as David Anderson Carroll and mother as Gretta May Ellsworth. Earl Clyde Carroll would have been born circa 1902-1908. He died of Blood Poisoning in the 1930's and his family was never notified that he died. I know circa 1950-1970 his family was looking for him. He had a cousin in the south central part of TN. No one can recall the name, and I think it was a female. He may have ties to Ky and has a child buried in Totz, Harlan Co., KY. Is anyone missing a Carroll family member born in that time frame? I have a photo of him.
