    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: southard Surnames: Carroll Carrell Carrol Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7083.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Marc, Have you sent a DNA sample to the CARROLL project to be tested? There now six men who have matched at least 35 markers out of 37 markers. Five of those are shown in orange on the chart at http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydnavalues.mht The other one is two lines above the orange. Four of those men did not know each other but each had a strong genealogy trail to a cluster of Carrol/Carrell/Carroll families who lived in Sampson County, NC in 1790. Three of those four matched perfectly. Another man descended from a person born in SC in 1808 had no known connection to Sampson County, NC, but he matches 36/37, so there was a connection at some time in the past. One other who thinks he comes from Sampson matched 35/37. These six men give a pretty good cluster with which others can compare. There is another cluster near the top of the chart in blue. Some of those have known ties to Orange County, NC. A DNA test would not tell you the name of Leonard's father, but it could tell you if you are related to one of these clusters already developing.... or if perhaps you could begin a unique group for those born in SC. Some day someone else would thank you for helping them find kinfolks. If you or anyone else is interested, I would strongly urge you to do the Y-DNA37 or the Y-DNA67 test. Less than 37 alleles (markers) are not enough to get a reliable result. You get a reduced price from FamilyTreeDNA if ordered through the CARROLL project. See all the links at http://www.familytreedna.com/(c1unxwvjnrr3oebovhuard3e)/public/carroll/index.aspx?fixed_columns=on You can order by clicking on "Request to Join this Group" near the top left. For any questions or for advice about ordering, contact the project administrator, Kevin Carroll at [email protected] I have come to the conclusion that DNA testing is the only way we are going to be able to unravel the mystery of these CARROLL families who came here early, worked hard, and stayed out of trouble with the law. They didn't leave many court records for us to follow. Lura CARROLL Southard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But I don't see him having a child in GA, in 1840. He would have been in AL by that time. I descend from Leonard Carroll b. c.1774 in SC. He first appears on the 1800 Census, Pendleton District, SC with wife and two boys age, under ten. One of these boys, Samuel was born in 1798 and I descend from him. The other boy on that census we believe to be William, from what we've found. They all remained in Abbeville County, SC until around 1815. Leonard and William, along with others, are next found in Jasper County, GA, in 1820. Then in Pike County, GA, in 1830 and Tallapoosa County, AL, in 1840. This is where William has been reported to have been buried. William's wife's name was Mary. One of their boys; James Carroll, was well documented there in Tallapoosa County, AL. If any of this seems to fit, you can email. Marc Carroll Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. ***Note - When the letter I mailed a few minutes ago came back to me, the words, sentences, and paragraphs were pressed together in such a way that I did not think you would be able to find the URL for the second website for the DNA project. I am sending the letter again, and I hope this will be easier to read. Lura >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Valerie, Unfortunately the Y-DNA results don't come back showing which line of the family is which. The string of numerals show how many repeats of a certain pattern is seen at a given spot on the Y chromosome. This string of numerals, or haplotype of the individual, is helpful only as it is compared with that of another person. Each laboratory chooses which spots on the chromosome to plot for comparing. These spots are considered to be "Junk" markers, because the are not important for the health or appearance of the man. The CARROLL project was started with FamilyTreeDNA and they offer tests of 12, 25, 37, or 67 markers. The more that are compared, the more accurate the results will be. The results of the Carroll project so far are displayed in two places on the web. One is the FTDNA site: http://www.familytreedna.com/(c1unxwvjnrr3oebovhuard3e)/public/carroll/index.aspx?fixed_columns=on(These results may not display properly if you have your web browser set to view with largest size fonts.) The other one is under the care of the project administrator, KevinCarroll. http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydnavalues.mht He has grouped some of the results together and given them a certain color if they seem to perhaps be related. Notice that three of those colored orange are identical. That is amazing since these three men did not know each other, and their ancestors had not lived in the same state for 200 years. This match of 37 out of 37 alleles (markers) tells us that there is a 99.55 percent probability that these men had a common ancestor in the last 12 generations and a 97.28 percent probability that the common ancestor was within the last 8 generations. It is still up to genealogy research to name thosecommon ancestors. In my case, the DNA gives evidence to what I thought was true based on research. On the right side of this chart some of the men have listed part of their lineage. Look there to see if you see one that might be your family. I see the name John Daniel Carroll for one, but I doubt that is the Daniel to whom you were referring. The more men who take the test, the faster the comparisons can be made and the results grouped to show related families. I hope this helps to answer your questions. Perhaps someone else can add more.
