    2. chris carroll
    3. Hello All -- I've just resubscribed to the CARROLL list after several years of having no time. I have lost contact with a fellow Carroll researcher named Sharon Moody. We connected on our family lines about 10 years ago through this list. If Sharon is still monitoring this list, please contact us. Still looking for additional information on William Carroll, born about 1795-96 in South Carolina, and information on his first wife. I have information to share if anyone is interested. I should have known better myself! Yes, Catherine had a penchant for pulling new ages out of the hat, however she died first and on their his-and-her tombstone John had the pleasure of having carved the worst date of all, which made her at least seven years older than him! But then there is a family legend that he emigrated to escape her and she followed him here, and he felt obliged to marry her. Thanks again. If you are using Ancestry.com, the 1870 surname is indexed as CARELL & the 1900 is indexed as CAROLL. In brief: 1870 John CARELL, 45, Farmer, b. Ireland Catherine--, 40, Keeping House, b. If you think they are in Erie Co. NY in 1860, then you may have to search page by page. Between the census taker's handwriting and creative spelling, sometimes the transcriber has a hard time deciphering. I found my CARROLL indexed as CANOLL in one census. Also, looks like John & Catherine were creative with their ages. Good luck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My first Carrell that I know of is Joseph Carrell in 1777 Richland District,SC, according to his will. One of the Joseph's daughters Martha Carrell married William J Hugg.I saw a excerpt from a will that was posted in South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research that was posted on Ancestry.com,but haven't been able to find it since. In it it mentions his daughter marrying William J Hugg, Also in Stephen Huggs will it says he's leaving a watch to his son in-law Jacob Carrell who is married to his(Stephen Hugg) daughter Nancy. In 1850 Murray Co,GA census is William J Hugg & wife Martha CARRELL Hugg.In same census & place is their daughter Martha E HUGG Hammett & John J Hammett,my GG grandparents & 2 children, William D M Hammett 3 years, & Martha 8 mo. Author: southard Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7153.3.2.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: That "terbaccy" generated a rich language of its own, didn't it? I wonder if anyone has recorded all the colloquial language associated with it?... and written a translation of it for those folks not fortunate enough to have been reared on the farm? I think much of what has been written here is discussing how the CARROLL name has changed since our ancestors arrived in North America. The name may have changed spellings for the very early immigrants before they got to the colonies, because the family may have spent a few years or a whole generation in exile in another country. For a while Leyden, Holland became sort of a refugee camp for religious pilgrims from the British Isles (including the Pilgrims who settled at Plymouth Rock), and some stayed there a generation or more. We think my husband's surname changed from Southworth to Southard while the family was in Holland. The Dutch ships brought many across the ocean besides just the Dutch who founded New Netherlands (New York). Just think how a Dutch ship Captain might have written "Carroll" on his passenger list when he usually had a hard sound like T on the end of most names! In her book "Virginia CARROLLS and Their Neighbors", Virginia Foster included at least one CARRICK family in her highlighted Carrolls. I have never understood the Soundex Code, but since there are folks who know much more about this than I do, I take their word for the fact that all spellings in the Soundex Code 640 may be my cousins. Rootsweb gives us all these words as a way to spell "Carroll". If our research is to be complete, we must search every source using each of these spellings. I had to give "how much terbaccy pap had" a little thought. Not only "terbaccy" but the regional accents come into play. For some reason, one of my HEDRICKS ancestors quite often got recorded as HENDRICKS. I have found my CARROLL ancestor spelled a variety of ways, the most unusual was CANOLL in a census transcription -this due to the very sloppy handwriting of the census taker. After viewing a copy of the original document, I probably would have made the same interpretation. If you focus on only one certain spelling, you may miss finding your ancestors. That was the fact that most of the time the names you are examining for the spelling were seldom written by the person themselves. If you have an exact signature from a will, etc. you can consider that as being the way they learned to spell the surname BUT if the one you're looking at was written by someone else....like a census taker...the exact spelling could be questionable. All surnames have alternative spellings. For example my maternal Hembree surname has 10 or 11 different spellings. The Rev. War Pension apps has two on those...Emory-Hembree. I've often told that the name has so many different spellings because it depended on how much terbaccy pap had in his jaw when the census taker came around.
