Author: southard Surnames: Carroll Carrell Carrel Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7437/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My G-G-Grandfather was Major Hardy CARROLL (or Carrell) who was born 1791 in Sampson County, NC, lived and died in Stokes County, NC. He was the son of Alexander Carrell and the Grandson of Dempsey Carrel, Sr. of Sampson/Duplin County, NC. In the 1790 Census of Sampson/Duplin, there were ten CARROL families. One was Alexander and there was living not far away another Hardy Carroll. This Hardy was in the Rev. War, came back to the area and died there in Duplin County abt. 1826. I am certain Alexander and Hardy were related, but so far, I don't know how. In 1845, one Hardy Carroll was hanged in Franklin County, NC for burglary. That is not far from Duplin County. His trial and verdict were instrumental in getting the penal code changed in NC, because he was hanged for stealing a pair of suspenders. You can read about that below. NOW.... Who can tell me to which family THIS Hardy Carroll belongs, because there is a good possibility I am related to him. :-) Lura >>>>>>>>>> http://docsouth.unc.edu/nc/johnson/chapter22.html "Ante-Bellum North Carolina: A Social History: Electronic Edition." Johnson, Guion Griffis, 1900- 1989 CHAPTER XXII THE CRIMINAL CODE "ONLY ONCE had the public mind been greatly agitated over reform in the court system; but frequently, from the opening of the century to the close of the period in 1860, the public was aroused over reform in the criminal code. When Hardy Carroll was hanged in Louisburg in the spring of 1845, the State press used his case as a means of stirring the public to vote for reform. "Perhaps there never was a case, which more strongly illustrated the want" of change, wrote the Raleigh Register of May 6. "He had a monomania for stealing and had been convicted capitally, we believe, three times for Horse stealing, but escaped each time, either by praying the benefit of Clergy, or through some defect in the record." He was finally hanged for grand larceny, the article stolen being a pair of suspenders." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Some of the things that I do when I am having trouble finding someone is to use only partial spellings of the given and/or surname, for instance: jac* car* and then narrow the search by putting in the birthyear and birthplace when I have that information. Keeping in mind that the birthplace is not always consistent from census to census (and sometimes the birthyear too). Another suggestion would be to look for the children. In 1880, he is HoH, age 52, widowed, in Hamilton Co., Jackson Twp., IN. Living with him is Alice, 17, dau, and ?S.H.Delta F., 20, son. See if you can find Alice or Delta in 1900. Or his other children- 1860: John (9) [I think this is John S. with whom he is living in 1910], Rachel (8) [I think John & Rachel are the children of his first wife, Elizabeth (found in 1850 census)]; 1870: Delta (9), A R (7, Alice in 1880), Rosa (5/12) [I think Delta, Alice and Rosa are the children of his second wife, Mahala]. Rosa may have died before 1880. She isn't listed with Jacob in 1880. One of the unusual transcriptions that I got for one of my Carrolls was 'Canoll'. The r's had been written very loopy and spread out. I knew without a doubt where they were living, but didn't get a hit when I searched for the various Carrol spellings. The only way I found it was by going page by page through Ancestry's records. This is only practical when the area you are searching is fairly small and you are pretty certain where they were living. I hope this helps you. Good luck in your search. Jane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. All that I can find out is the information that I have posted and what I have in my tree. I think that Will's grandfather,James W. Parker, lived in Roane County, Tennessee in the 1850 with Melissa "Elizabeth" Hoskins, married 1843 in Anderson County, Tennessee, also showing on the census an elder James Parker age 72 born in Virgina, that could be James W.'s father. On the 1860 census it shows them living in Panola county, showing a Melvina, not sure what happened to Melissa, but it lists her family members such as Milton T. Hoskins, living with James W. Parker, and their children, where it lists Isaac Parkerat the age of 4. The 1930 census shows Will Parker's father, Isaac Miller Parker, was from Texas and his mother, Chalcedony "Chalce Dona" Carroll was from Tennessee. It also shows Anna Marie Hansen's mother and father were from Denmark, and she was born in Nebraska. I heard stories that Isaac's parents were ki! lled in a tornado, and he lived with a black family. This time frame is where there is missing information that I can not find. I hope someone will be able to get me in the right track! When my grandmother died in 1943 and the family tried to have the grave of her son Earl Francis McCormick d-1932 and her brother John Carley d-1928, Holy Name Cemetery said the deed was picked up as owner named Carroll or Farrell. They had proof of ownership and the graves were unmarked until a stone was erected after 1932. We think someone in the family thought my grandmother Mary Carley McCormick was trying to take ownership of the grave so this family picked up the deed. We had to buy a new pot for Mary. The cemetery gave me a list of who was buried in this plot.
