Author: southard Surnames: CARROLL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7466.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: That's too bad, because we really need to establish some lineages with a known ancestry directly to a county... or even a country... of origin. Many of our Carrolls in North America cannot yet say beyond a shadow of a doubt that their ancestors came here from Ireland, or even from The British Isles. A few who assumed they were Irish have learned they were Palatines, Huguenots, or Germans. It really doesn't matter to most of us where they lived before arriving here. We just want to learn who they were. Thanks for the reply, Lura Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Has a male with the CARROLL surname and direct paternal lineage from Kieran Carroll taken the DNA test and become part of the Carroll DNA Project? If so, do you mind sharing the kit number with us? If you do not have an entry on the chart at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/carroll/ and http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydna.html would you consider doing that? It would help all of us and might find you instant relatives. Author: Mcbeav Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7465.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have done some snooping through Church records of Liverpool at the Mormon Family Library in Salt Lake City. I unfortunately did not find any relatives in the Catholic Churches. I assumed of course we were Catholic at that time. I did find once large Carroll family with a consistent name of Alice Carroll and perhaps Ann. Today I am assuming my Carroll family were Protestant at that time and I need to search through the Presbytarian Church records of the mid-1800's. Some day. Regarding Y-DNA, the research follows your paternal line. If your surname is Carroll, I hope you get involved. See the following: Kevin Carroll is Administrator for the Carroll Y-DNA Project at FamilyTreeDNA, and his e-mail address is available on the Carroll pages at FamilyTreeDNA. The 37 marker test is the minimum you should get involved in to be useful. The three sites for the project are: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/carroll/ http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=F25174&special=True http://www.childtalk.com/History/carrollfamilydna.html Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: traymat1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7465.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hiya Mike, thanks for your post, sounds like you have some leads to work with and the Y-DNA thingy. Is it where you can give a DNA sample and be matched with other family tree searchers? I have been researching another side of my family but have wanted to know more about the Carroll line and hoped someone out there might have some leads. At this stage i don't know enough about the English Carroll's to be able to link them to a certain part of Ireland yet but it's early days in my snooping. Do you know much about the Catholics and Protestants of Ireland or who is likely to come from which area? I haven't learn't much about that yet but i think it will probably be a big help with my research. Either Ann's mother or grandmother was apparently Spanish (don't know any names)which just seems a bit odd to me since Spain is a very catholic country but these Carroll's were protestant???? Let me know if you find out anything that you think may be of help and good luck with your snooping...err research! Thanks mate:) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Mcbeav Surnames: Carroll, Dunn(e), Sheehan, Smiddy, Gillespie, McGinley, Kieley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carroll/7465.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Good morning. I also have relatives that moved to Liverpool from Northern Ireland but during or right after the potato famine (late 1840's or early 1850's). The Carroll's of that area (County Louth, County Down, partial County Antrim) are of the Oriel Sept and finally lost their lands to the English Plantation plague that hit in the early 1600's. There are some Carroll's that matched the first names (Frank and Edwin) of the paternal side of my family buried in Raloo Cemetery southwest of Belfast. Raloo does not exist anymore, but the cemetery does. It is a settlement of Crawfords and Blairs who came from Scotland during the Plantation era. It appears that the only choices that Carroll's had were to either assimilate with the Scot's, move to America (or elsewhere), or die. I have found through Y-DNA research, relatives that moved to the Carolina's during this period. I assume at this point that my male relations married into the Scottish families, especially since my ! Great Grandfather who born in 1852 was 6'5" in 1866. Most indigenous Irish persons are under 6' during the mid-1800's. Also think I found my Great Great Grandfather who married a protestant Mary McKibbons in 1843 in County Down. I think the reason I am not Protestant today is because my Great Grandfather came to United States at age 17 after being on the sea for 10 years without any religion, and married a Catholic woman from Lowell, Massachusetts. Are you involved in Y-DNA research? My kit number is 31491. Best of luck in your search and keep in touch. She had a sister called Eva, both born around or shortly after 1900 in Liverpool uk. (found possible birth dates for each in 1901 & 1911 uk census, listed as born in Bury, Lancs) I think they had a brother or brothers and were possibly a fairly new family to England at the time. I've been told that the family originally came from northern Ireland (don't know when, poss Belfast area) and has some Spanish roots. This family was apparently protestant and not catholic. Ann was disowned by the family for marrying a catholic.
