Moses Carpenter Signed, Sealed published and declared by the above named Moses Carpenter to be his last Will and testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of the testator Jacob Gunsalus Reuben Spalding Rachel Ann Taylor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- Moses Carpenter first married Elizabeth Runyon b. 14 December 1751 of Morris Co., N.J., daughter of Richard and Jane (Van Court) Runyon. She died ab. 1775 after the birth of their daughter Elizabeth Runyon Carpenter who married James Wisner son of John Wisner, Jr. and Mary Thompson of Orange Co. N.Y. Moses Carpenter married June 26, 1777 Hannah Smith daughter of Henry and Joanna Smith. Their daughters were Susannah m. Michael Redman; Joanna m. Jesse Read, and Abigail m. David Munro. Moses tombstone in the Elbridge Rural Cemetery reads d. Feb 23, 1829 in the 78th year and Hannah tombstone in the Elbridge Rural Cemeter reads d. Aug. 30, 1838 ae 83 year. Many of their descendants are also listed in the Elbridge Rural Cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- My line was thru his daughter Elizabeth Runyon (her middle name) Carpenter and James Wisner who apparently went to Onondaga Co. with Moses. My Wisner line was thru James daughter Eliza Wisner who married Joel Melvin, who was from the Jonathan Melvin family that had come down from Conway, MA to Wayne/Ontario Co. after the Rev. War. Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Still searching for any information regarding the ancestry of a Henry Carpenter or Jonathan Fay in New York, Illinois or perhaps in between. I’m still trying to connect into any known lines of Carpenters. Henry Carpenter was born in New York about 1795 and died about 1837. He married Roxana Fay in Salina, New York, about 1820. He died early, probably before the birth of the last two children (twins Augusta and Byron) b. Sep 23, 1837 in Illinois. They evidently moved to Ottawa, Illinois and I am presuming he was somehow involved with the building of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. In 1840 she is referred to as a widow living in DeKalb Co., Illinois. Henry Carpenter and Roxana Fay had the following family: 1 Charlotte Carpenter. Married ( ? ) Skelton and had four children. 2 Marion Carpenter was born about 1822 (in NY?). 3 Jerome Bonaparte Carpenter was born Sep 16, 1824 in NY. 4 Thaddeus B. Carpenter was born in Apr 1829 in NY. 5 Wallace Fay Carpenter was born in Feb 1832 in NY. 6 Henry Carpenter Jr. was born Aug 27, 1834 in Onondaga, Co., NY. 7 Augusta Melissa Carpenter was born Sep 23, 1837 in Sandwich, Illinois. 8 Byron Fay Carpenter was born Sep 23, 1837 in Sandwich, Illinois. Details and descendants at: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jcmosher_ ma&id=I26 Roxanna Fay's father Jonathan Fay (b. 4/28/1774 in Hardwick, MA) and his family moved to DeKalb Co., Illinois in 1836-1837. But Jonathan died January 12, 1837. Tradition has it that he died in Chicago on his way to the "Great West". If I can find Jonathan Fay I may also find a record of Henry Carpenter. Jerome Carpenter says he grew up in Syracuse and Salina, New York but moved in 1837 to Illinois with his mother and family. I am descendant from Augusta M. Carpenter who married Henry Augustus Adams in Sandwich, Illinois. John Carpenter Mosher
