Still searching for any information regarding the ancestry of a Henry Carpenter or Jonathan Fay in New York, Illinois or perhaps in between. I’m still trying to connect into any known lines of Carpenters. Henry Carpenter was born in New York about 1795 and died about 1837. He married Roxana Fay in Salina, New York, about 1820. He died early, probably before the birth of the last two children (twins Augusta and Byron) b. Sep 23, 1837 in Illinois. They evidently moved to Ottawa, Illinois and I am presuming he was somehow involved with the building of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. In 1840 she is referred to as a widow living in DeKalb Co., Illinois. Henry Carpenter and Roxana Fay had the following family: 1 Charlotte Carpenter. Married ( ? ) Skelton and had four children. 2 Marion Carpenter was born about 1822 (in NY?). 3 Jerome Bonaparte Carpenter was born Sep 16, 1824 in NY. 4 Thaddeus B. Carpenter was born in Apr 1829 in NY. 5 Wallace Fay Carpenter was born in Feb 1832 in NY. 6 Henry Carpenter Jr. was born Aug 27, 1834 in Onondaga, Co., NY. 7 Augusta Melissa Carpenter was born Sep 23, 1837 in Sandwich, Illinois. 8 Byron Fay Carpenter was born Sep 23, 1837 in Sandwich, Illinois. But Jonathan died January 12, 1837. Tradition has it that he died in Chicago on his way to the "Great West". If I can find Jonathan Fay I may also find a record of Henry Carpenter. Jerome Carpenter says he grew up in Syracuse and Salina, New York but moved in 1837 to Illinois with his mother and family. I am descendant from Augusta M.
