Q. Was Jemima, the wife of Benjamin-5 BURLINGHAM, a CARPENTER? >From Chapter 109, "The Burlingham Family" in "The Settlers of the Beekman Patent" by Frank Doherty: "Benjamin-5 BURLINGHAM (Samuel-4-3, Thomas-1, Roger-1) was poss. born in DC [Dutchess County] and m. Jemima _________ who d. 8 June 1790 in her 41st year and was bd. in the Valley View Cemetery in Dover. She was admitted into the Dover Baptist church 19 Sept. 1789... Benjamin BURLINGHAM was mentioned in the will of Sebastian WHEELER dated 21 April 1788. [Dutchess County Wills on file in the Surrogate Court, Poughkeepsie, NY; A:74]." Probably due to Benjamin BURLINGHAM's association with Sebastian WHEELER, various online records identify Jemima's maiden name as WHEELER without citing a source: http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/hulse/fam02068.htm http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=judykaye&id=I1435 9 Sebastian WHEELER's will is online at... http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/localities.northam.usa.states.n ewyork.counties.dutchess/4964 Regrettably, the will does not identify any of his eight daughters by name. However, one son-in-law is identified as such and the reference to Benjamin BURLINGHAM only pertains to an outstanding financial obligation so the identification of Jemima as a WHEELER seems doubtful (although it cannot be ruled out). In reviewing the given names of the children of Benjamin & Jemima (-----) BURLINGHAM, one wonders if CARPENTER might have been Jemima's maiden name. Benjamin was of Rhode Island and ancestry and the CARPENTER family was numerous in both RI and Dutchess County. Here are the names of their children (birth order uncertain): Jemima Rebecca Elizabeth Benjamin Joseph Charles Carpenter Abraham John Martha Susannah Ruby Sarah Hannah Lavina Philip Does anyone have any CARPENTER wills, deeds, etc. with evidence to support or refute this speculation?
