Stephen's father-in-law, Brice Aldrich, had died in 1854. It's also possible that a member of Stephen's own family had died leaving him property. (S.Johnston). There are some discrepancies in the birth dates for Stephen and children. The family is in the 1840 Census, and the 1850 census, lists Stephen as 40 in 1850, Charles as 12, Helen as 10, Adelia as 5 and Cassius as 2. 11/BCT).
