I've been told to check property holdings as they sometimes say Charles Carpenter of San Francisco or some such as a clue. Then of course look for church records ( as to baptismal records.) Also check your library - there are some good Carpenter books. Of course you can only use these as a guide for many of the early researchers weren't to careful. Jessie Deith
