My posting of 12 August 2004 deals only with Warren Carpenter and his son Jotham, both of Russia, Herkimer Co., New York, and formerly of Swansea and Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Warren was the son of John5 (Benjamin4, Joseph3, William2-1) and Sarah (Hilliard) Carpenter. I see no connection (direct, at least) between them and the Carpenters of Norway, Herkimer Co., who were formerly of Rhode Island. It seems highly unlikely, moreover, that William Carpenter of Norway, Herkimer Co. (b. Rhode Island ca. 1809) was the same as the William Carpenter (b. Sandy Hill, Washington Co., N.Y., ca. 1808), son of John Carpenter (b. Jamaica, Long Island, 11 July 1765). The 1850 federal census for Norway has six Carpenter men reported as born in Rhode Island (among them, the least common forenames are Low and Edward); it would be appropriate to look for them there. That Charles Carpenter's middle name was Pomeroy (an old New England surname) might indicate that he was named after a (Charles?) Pomeroy, perhaps from an allied family.
