    3. Hello everyone, I need to update the information that I have concerning my William Carpenter line which John R. referred to in his previous e-mail. William Carpenter (1) was born unknown and died unknown. He had at least one known son named William. ( I have found several articles that state he was born about 1701 near NY but I have not been able to document this.) William Carpenter (2) was born in New York (exact location unknown.) He may have been born in either Dutchess or Westchester County about 1761. He died in the fall sometime between 1821 and 1825 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York. ( See Gdn. note below.) William married Lois Austin who died in Kingsbury, Washington County, New York, April 30, 1814. William's occupation was a cooper. William was living in Washington County by 1790 with his family. He had several land transactions the earliest being 25 December 1795 for 44 acres. In 1803 William had several land transactions with Stephen Carpenter, where William and Stephen exchanged 8 acres of land. William owned Lot 67 and Stephen owned Lot 68. The last transaction that William made was in 1807. It is possible that Stephen and William were related, but I have not been able to find any documents to confirm this. There was a Stephen Carpenter who died in Sandy Hill, Washington County, NY age 63 on 26 August 1841. This puts his date of birth about 1777/8. William and Lois had the following children: 1. Silas Carpenter Born 06 October 1792, Kingsbury, Washington County, NY. Moved to the town of Onondaga, Onondaga County, NY where he died 30 September 1875. Married Betsey_____. Silas and Betsey had the following children born in Onondaga: Charles born 1822/died 04 August 1845, Rensalaer born 1816/died 05 December 1817, Lois born 01 January 1819/died 17 April 1894 Charles born_____/died_____. 2. William Carpenter (3) Born about 1796/7 in the town of Kingsbury, Washington County, New York. Died unknown. William married Zilphia_____ probably in Kingsbury. Washington County deeds show in 1820 that William and Zilphia Carpenter purchased land and then sold the same land in 1823. William and Zilphia moved from Kingsbury to the town of Yates, Orleans County, NY sometime after 1822. They are last listed in the 1850 census in the town of Yates. At least two of their children moved to Michigan around this time so they may have gone with them. William and Zilphia had the following children: Charles born 1820/ died unknown. He moved from Yates sometime after the 1850 census and was living briefly in Ohio before settling in Michigan. Hiram C. Born November 1822 in Kingsbury, Washington County, NY. He died 18 August 1899 in Lyndonville, Orleans County, NY. William H. born 1824/ died unknown. William may have gone to Michigan. Caroline born 1829/died unknown. 3. Mary A. Carpenter was born about 1798/9 in Kingsbury, Washington County, New York. Died unknown. She married Paul Perry who was from Onondaga County, NY. He was born about 1798. Mary and Paul had the following children: William born 1823 in NY, died ______. Henry born 1830 in New York, died ____. John born about 1833/35 in New York, died______. Merritt born 1840/41 in New York. This family moved to Downer's Grove, Illinois. 4. Charles Carpenter (Judge) was born 04 September 1800 in Kingsbury, Washington County, NY., and died 30 May 1891. He is buried in the Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Geddes, Onondaga county, NY. He came to the town of Onondaga, Onondaga County, NY in the fall of 1816. He became the "Principal Salt Inspector" in the town of Geddes, and later held numerous public offices including "Judge" until his death. He married 1st 15 April 1824 Nancy Burgess (04 October 1804 - 20 January 1855) and 2nd Abiah L. Briggs. Charles and Nancy had the following children: Charles H. born____/died_____, Cynthia Ann died young, Emeline died young, Seth M. born______/died_____, Edward W born_____/died_______, William H. born______/died_____, Silas A. born_____ died_____, Kate L. born____/died_____ and Emma L. born_____/died____. NOTE: The guardianship records for Onondaga County, NY contained the following: 26 May 1825 - Charles Carpenter was appointed guardian: "To Charles Carpenter, Salina New York. Whereas Henry Carpenter son of William Carpenter of Little Falls, Herkimer County, NY., who was 15 yrs on 22 day of February last." 5. Henry Carpenter (my line) was born 22 February 1810 in Sandy Hill, Washington County, NY. He died 07 June 1891 in Downer's Grove, Illinois. Henry married 14 October 1832 in Orleans county, NY., Martha Blanchard. She was born 21 January 1813 in Whitehall, NY and died 02 October 1882 in Downer's Grove, Illinois. Children of Henry and Martha: Walter born 05 November 1833 in Orleans County, NY. and died 09 November 1856 in Chicago, Illinois. William Henry born 06 August 1842 in Orleans County, NY and died 20 May 1848 in Downer's Grove, Illinois. Martha Jane born 15 September 1845 in Downer's Grove, Illinois. She died 02 February 1923 in Downer's Grove, Illinois. Martha married Eugene Farrar. William Sheldon was born in Warrensville, Illinois 19 November 1854. He was an adopted son of Henry and Martha. William married Martha Hobart in Downer's Grove, Illinois. They had one child, Nellie who never married. They moved to California. The natural parents of William are not known. 6. Unknown female Birth and death dates unknown. In Henry's diary he states that his parents had six children. He also refers to his sister Mary as "his oldest sister". I do not think that the Charles Pomeroy Carpenter mentioned in the e-mail is related to my line. I hope some of the above information can help someone. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this great mailing list. My posting of 12 August 2004 deals only with Warren Carpenter and his son Jotham, both of Russia, Herkimer Co., New York, and formerly of Swansea and Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Warren was the son of John5 (Benjamin4, Joseph3, William2-1) and Sarah (Hilliard) Carpenter. I see no connection (direct, at least) between them and the Carpenters of Norway, Herkimer Co., who were formerly of Rhode Island. It seems highly unlikely, moreover, that William Carpenter of Norway, Herkimer Co. (b. Rhode Island ca. 1809) was the same as the William Carpenter (b. Sandy Hill, Washington Co., N.Y., ca. 1808), son of John Carpenter (b. Jamaica, Long Island, 11 July 1765). The 1850 federal census for Norway has six Carpenter men reported as born in Rhode Island (among them, the least common forenames are Low and Edward); it would be appropriate to look for them there. That Charles Carpenter's middle name was Pomeroy (an old New England surname) might indicate that he was named after a (Charles?) Pomeroy, perhaps from an allied family.
