I heard that my Carpenters were French from two older cousins when I first started doing my research. They are both gone now. My oldest known ancestor was Samuel Carpenter, d. about 1818 in Mecklenburg County, VA. I found out that my great-grandmother had a french name, so I assumed that was where it came from, but maybe not. DNA shows that our family is somehow connected with the "tidewater" Carpenters in Virginia, also with some who moved to Alabama, although we don't have a documented connection. Has anybody in your family had the DNA test?
