Jan, I will be better able to answer this when I locate the parents and siblings of my John CARPENTER, b. 1797 in VT. He had three sons: Samuel, wounded twice in the Civil War; Giles, killed in action (naval, acc. to family story) in Civil War; and James, my GGgrandfather. G.B. may very well be a son of Giles or Samuel, or the grandson of one of my John's siblings. I will try to keep you informed.
