    3. In early England every king and noble had his carpenter, a respected member of his household.I mentioned earlier John of Gaunt's carpenter, who used "le Carpentier" as an almost title. He had his own surname as well and sometimes used used that. These individuals had great importance and power. King William's carpenters were perhaps the first recorded examples. At any rate these carpenters in the Doomsday Book have nothing to with the merchant family that produced Bishop John of Worcester. Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter
