W. Carpenter). *1834 Aug 24 b. Isle of Sheppy, Kent Co., England. *1853 age 19 years left England and arrived in North America. *1853 –64 Worked in the Iron mines in the upper peninsula of Michigan. 1864 Became a resident of CA (from Death Certificate, a resident of CA for 44yrs). *1864 worked in the Grass Valley, Nevada Co., CA area for 5 years. 1860 Not in 1860 Census for Sutter Co. CA. 1869 Aug 14 "James William Carpenter, Native of England, resident of Slough, (Voting District) Sutter Co., CA Naturalized Sutter Co. by County Court, date of Registration 14 Aug 1869". The original naturalization records were burned in the Sutter Co. Court House in the 1870’s. Only the Naturalization Index Card and the Voting Register show this information. 1871 Apr 1 Patent Land to J. W. Carpenter purchached160 acres. 1871 Central Railroad to J. W. Carpenter purchased 80 acres. 1871 Sep 3 m. Eliza Jane Bailey "At the residence of L. P. Farmer September 3rd, by Rev. E. Kellog, Mr. James W. Carpenter to Miss Eliza J. Bailey." From: Marysville Daily Appeal, Vol XXIX No.61. L.P.Farmer was married to Eliza J. Bailey’s sister Elizabeth. 1876 Nov 22 Carpenter to O’Banion 160 acres $4100. 1876 Nov 22 Thomas to J. W. Carpenter 160 acres $10,000. 1876 Decree of Settlement of Account Lots 1 & 2 to J. W. Carpenter. 1896 Sutter County Voting Register : "James William Carpenter, Farmer, age 62 years 5 ft-7in height, light complexion, gray eyes, dark brown hair, able to read English, able to write Name, physically able to mark ballot."
