A day before attending my middle son's graduation from private school in Connecticut, I drove for a day's explorations to Rehoboth, Seekonk and East Providence. I quickly found the the most important site for we Rehoboth Carpenters, and that is the Samuel Newmann Congregational Church in East Providence, just over the line from Seekonk. The church was founded by our William in the 1640s. The lady in the church office was glad to hear I was a Carpenter. She in fact has Carpenter relatives. The whole area is rife with Carpenter Streets, Carpenter Hills and Carpenter whatevers. She supplied this pilgrim with a good map to William's grave, located in the church graveyard directly across the street. I was unprepared for what I found and profoundly moved. One enters the stonewalled gate, then moves along a dirt roadway. One hundred feet or so in, and on the left, are the well known grave markers with the Cobham Arms. Close by, by the way, are graves of Carpenter related groups, like the Bowens, who used the Cobham Arms also. Hundreds of early Carpenters lie at rest in the immediate proximity. However, directly across the dirt pathway-road, and not twenty feet, are the very early Carpenters. William's stone marker is no longer extant, although wife Abagail's is, being an extremely crude triangular stone with A.C. carved upon it. Willaim and son Samuel lie on either side. What is truely remarkable however, is five generations of subsequent descendants, who are buried in circles around these three. I paid special attention to the Samuel group, because I descend from them. They seemed all to be there, which said to me this was an extremely closeknit family group for almost two hundred years. They must have all worshipped at the Newmann church. I found the indian Carpenter, Martha Hunt Carpenter and her husband Stephen, not more than fifteen feet from William's resting place.
