Phoebe, Joshua's wife was Sarah Burt, their son, Daniel Carpenter married Rebecca Dunn, and their son Benjamin C. Carpenter has a cousin Jane Dunn living with him in 1860 thru 1900 census. Eliza Dunn in 1860 census is possibly another cousin. I have no clue who the parents of these Dunn's were. Jane gives both parents born NY in 1880 and 1900 census. Dennis
Dennis, Do you have any information on Rebecca Dunn who was born in New Jersey, wife of Joshua? The reason I ask is because my Moses Carpenter was an exec. to the will of one Phinias Dun of of Goshen, Orange Co, NY will made 12/26/1786 named wife Anna Du and dau Zeruiah and Elizaabeth. Some notes I have gathered about Daniel Carpenter and his family, including the will abstract first found at the Chemung County NYGebWeb Dennis F. Carpenter ***** note: Carpenter, Joshua, grandfather of Benjamin C., came to Newtown (now Elmira) in [1788], and located permanently the following year upon the homestead on which his grandson still owns. At this date Elmira had but one house. His son Daniel, born near Newburgh, Orange County, NY in 1776, came here in 1788 with his parents and about 1798 married Rebecca Dunn, who was born in New Jersey. They had ten children viz.: Sarah, James D., Burt, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rebecca, William, and Benjamin C. The latter, born March 16, 1825, has always been a farmer and a bachelor, the town line runs through his house. (Our county and its people: a history of the valley and county of Chemung from the closing years of the eighteenth century. Part VII, p.32, Ausburn Towner 1892) note: the above list of children of Daniel appear to be in birth order. note: Will dated 17 Apr 1848, probated 31 MAY 1849 giving Daniel's age as 71y and upwards. Mentions wife Rebecca; sons Benjamin, James, Daniel B., John, William; daughters Sarah VanSickle, Elizabeth Cook, Rebecca Campbell. Executors: sons John Carpenter, William Carpenter Witnesses: Almon Cook of Elmira, Marilla Chapman of Elmira. note: The Whitney Family of Connecticut by Stephen Whitney Phoenix, 1878 [p. 491] 2509 X. They, settled at Horseheads, N. Y., and were living there in Jan. 1886. note: Carpenter, Daniel, born April 7, 1845, is the proprietor of the Half-way Hotel, which has been in existance since soon after the Sullivan campaign. He married, April 13, 1868, Phebe J., oldest daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Sample, of Horseheads, and they have one daughter, Lizzie, born August 8, 1876. His father, John, was the third son of Daniel, who married, first, August 16, 1831, Nancy Beckwith, by whom he had five children, viz.: Eliza A., Mary E., Thomas D., John, and Nancy. For his second wife he married Phoebe Tubbs, April 6, 1842, and February 22, 1843, he marrie, third, Sally M., daughter of John and Esther Trusdal, of Horseheads. Family trees grow by many methods. Most grow naturally, ring after ring being added down through the generations. A son or daughter marries and new branches are formed to start their own little tree which will over time become their root tree. Other branches of the big family tree will continue growth until one branch comes to a dead end. Sometimes though trees grow by graphing in new sprouts, which help the big tree grow in new and different ways adding a new flavor to the bigger tree. My what's it all about, is just this latter case. http://home.highertech.net/~tstowell/tian.htm ------------------------------------------------------via webmail---- Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net

If it's the latter, then I suggest the first letter is an "M" instead of an "H". John Chandler
On a poor copy of an 1863 map, there is a house next to a canal. I believe it was a stopping place for the canal men. There is a three letter abbreviation before the owners name. It looks like "Hrs" of (owner's name). Elsewhere the houses have only the owners name. A hotel also elsewhere is only labeled "Hotel". Any guesses as to what "Hrs" might mean? Jessie

Irish Americans looking for their roots will have an opportunity to learn how to trace their family trees back to Europe at a genealogy lecture scheduled to take place in Bridgeport on Saturday, March 15, 2008. The presentations by three noted researchers will take place at Housatonic Community College 900 Lafayette Blvd in Bridgeport starting at noon. Prof. Jonathan Shea, a foreign language professor at HCC, will lead off the sessions speaking about American sources needed to find information about the family on this side of the ocean, some of which will take the researcher back to the family?s place of origin in Ireland. Among the sources to be discussed are local birth, marriage and death records, probate files, church registers and similar documentation generated on a local level as well as information laden records of the federal government such as decennial census returns, WWI draft registrations and ships passenger lists from Ellis Island and other ports of entry. Shea, a New Britain native, traces his paternal roots to the counties of Offaly and Mayo in Ireland and has done on site research in the National Archives in Dublin, local county records offices and Catholic parish archives in his counties of origin. Stated Shea, "My family not only emigrated to the US but to the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina and New Zealand so tracking down all the various branches of the family has taken me on a documentary journey to four continents." Resources in Ireland will be discussed by Janet Pestey of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists. Major records sources such as the nineteenth century Griffiths Valuation Lists and the surviving Irish census returns will be covered as well as information on national vital records indexes many of which are available at the Family History Center in Woodbridge and the resources to be found at Irish National Archives. Also included will be Civil Registration records which began in 1864, church records, tithe records estate records. Local sources and computer sites will also be discussed. The speaker is a retired educator and a frequent lecturer on the topic. The third in the trio of experts is Daniel Lynch of Trumbull. Lynch will concentrate on internet sources researchers can use from the comfort of their own home to hunt for ancestors. As more and more records are digitized and becoming available on home computers, this facet of genealogical research is among the fastest growing aspects of genealogy. a pastime of millions Americans. Lynch is a 22 year veteran of the computer industry and served as a consultant to the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation and was featured on ABC News Good Morning America as part of their genealogy series. The author of numerous genealogy articles, Lynch is a frequent lecturer on genealogy and technology. The seminar is the result of a collaboration between Housatonic, The Connecticut Society of Genealogists, headquartered in East Hartford and the Connecticut Ancestry Society headquartered in Stamford. Free parking in the college's parking garage is available to all participants and all are welcome at the event. There is no charge to attend the lectures. The Irish program is the second of a series of genealogy lectures held at Housatonic. Last year's seminar on Polish and Eastern European research attracted a capacity crowd from all over the state as well as persons from neighboring states. To obtain an approximate head count of those planning to attend, would-be participants are asked to contact Prof. Shea at jshea@hcc.commnet.edu, Stephanie Hyland of The Connecticut Society of Genealogists csginc@ctfamilyhistory.com, or Rob Locke of Connecticut Ancestry Society at info@connecticutancestry.org **************Ideas to please picky eaters. On 2/27/2008, in reply to my posting of 2/25/08 ("Joseph2 Carpenter of Warwick, R.I., and Musketa Cove, L.I."), John L. Carpenter writes: << Joseph2 Carpenter was born about 1638, probably at Providence Plantation (not 1635, in England), what is this based on what Source? >> _______________________ John, It is a conclusion based mainly on the following: (1) a rejection of the assumption that, because Joseph2 witnessed a deed in 1656, he must have been an adult at the time and thus born about 1635; and (2) a 1664 deposition in which Joseph Carpenter reports his age as 26. English common law entitled a child of fourteen (the _age of discretion_) to choose a guardian, testify in court, bequeath personal property in a will, indenture oneself without parental consent--and witness documents (see William Blackstone, _Commentaries on The Laws of England_, 4 vols. [Oxford, 1765-1769], vol. 1, ch. 17, online at _www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/blackstone/bk1ch17.htm_ (http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/blackstone/bk1ch17.htm) ). The deposition is published in _Harris Papers_, Collections of the Rhode Island Historical Society, vol. 10 (Providence, 1902), 72-73. Most of the above information is presented in my previous posting's first paragraph, which ends with the following: "For a detailed discussion of this and related issues—the immigration of William1 Carpenter of Providence (ca. 1636, as a single man) and his marriage to Elizabeth Arnold (ca. 1637, probably at Providence)—see _The New England Historical and Genealogical Register_ 159:67–68." Included in that discussion is additional evidence--that William1 Carpenter of Providence did not arrive in New England with his wife and her family in 1635 and had not known them in England--lending support to the conclusion relating to Joseph's approximate year (and probable place) of birth. As it happens, John, near the bottom of the "Descendants of William #1 Carpenter" page of your website you have posted most of the contents of my e-mail message to this list, dated 3 Feb. 2002, which presents essentially the same information (both that above and below). But for your convenience and that of other interested parties, here's an excerpt of the _Register_ article, copied and pasted from my typescript of it (the footnote numbers are actually 58-65): APPENDIX 2: THE MARRIAGE AND IMMIGRATION OF WILLIAM1 CARPENTER OF PROVIDENCE Since first asserted in 1901, it has become dogma that the marriage of William Carpenter of Providence to William1 and Christian (Peak) Arnold’s daughter Elizabeth occurred in England and that the nascent Carpenter family (including son Joseph) came to Massachusetts with the Arnolds,_[1]_ (#_ftn1) who arrived on 24 June 1635._[2]_ (#_ftn2) There are several reasons to doubt that Carpenter had any contact with the Arnolds in England, however. First, his probable former home of Amesbury, Wiltshire, and that of the Arnolds, at Ilchester, Somersetshire, are more than forty miles apart._[3]_ (#_ftn3) “ [H]oping to assist further research,” Elisha Arnold (1935) introduces the 1606 marriage of Richard Carpenter and Susanna Trevelian, recorded at Nettlecombe, Somerset (seventy plus miles from Amesbury), as “seem[ing] to connect in some way with a John and Richard at Salisbury, 7 miles from Amesbury.”_[4]_ (#_ftn4) So as to put William Carpenter and Elizabeth Arnold in close proximity in England, overzealous researchers have converted this item into the now frequently seen (online) assertions that Richard and Susanna (Trevelian) Carpenter were Providence William’s parents and that Richard died at Ilchester in 1625. Trevelian’s husband, however, died at Loxhore, Devonshire, in 1627 and left neither a son William nor a daughter Frideswide (see note 49)._[5]_ (#_ftn5) The Richard Carpenter buried at Amesbury, 21 September 1625, is far more likely to have been William’s father than one said to have died at Ilchester that year._[6]_ (#_ftn6) A second reason for skepticism as to Carpenter-Arnold contact in England is that while William1 Arnold--like William1 Carpenter, an original Providence proprietor--was granted a house-lot at Hingham, Massachusetts, on 18 September 1635, William1 Carpenter was not._[7]_ (#_ftn7) Had the latter man already married Elizabeth Arnold and immigrated with her family, he, too, almost certainly would have become a Hingham proprietor; the town’s records fail altogether to mention him, however. William1 Carpenter first appears in New England records at Providence, no earlier than mid 1637, under “Agrements & orders the second year of ye Plantation” (begun at Seekonk in the spring of 1636 and relocated to present-day Providence that summer)._[8]_ (#_ftn8) [Reasons three and four pertain to Joseph2's approximate birth year (see this message's first paragraph).] ____________________________________ _[1]_ (#_ftnref1) See, for example, Daniel Carpenter, _Carpenter Family at Providence_ [note 9], 8-9, 30, 31; Elisha Stephen Arnold, _The Arnold Memorial: William Arnold of Providence and Pawtuxet, 1587-1675 . . . _ (Rutland, Vt.: Tuttle Publishing Co., 1935), 9, 52; Mildred Mosher Chamberlain, “Early Rhode Island Settlers,” _Rhode Island Roots_ 13 (1987):75. _[2]_ (#_ftnref2) Edwin Hubbard, “Early Records of the Arnold Family,” _Register_ 33 (1879):428. _[3]_ (#_ftnref3) See _Early Records of Providence_ [note 12], 5:323; Edson Salisbury Jones, “The Parentage of William Arnold and Thomas Arnold of Providence, R.I.,” _Register_ 69 (1915):66-68. _[4]_ (#_ftnref4) Arnold, _Arnold Memorial_ [note 58], 35. _[5]_ (#_ftnref5) Charles William Boase, ed., _Registrum Collegii Exoniensis: Register of . . . (London: the transcriber, 1887-90), 2:109-10. _[6]_ (#_ftnref6) See Amesbury Parish Register, vol. 1, unpaged; Daniel Carpenter, _Carpenter Family at Providence_ [note 9], 8n. On Amesbury’s eastern border is the parish of Newton Toney, where on 7 August 1603 a Richard Carpenter married Alice Knight and another Richard Carpenter married Ann Kent on 31 October 1603 (Newton Toney Parish Register, unpaged [FHL 1,279,336, item 13]). The latter man died at Newton Toney in 1614 (ibid.; Archdeaconry Court of Sarum, Reg. 8, fol. 226 [FHL 0,994,489, item 1]); the only Newton Toney record surely of the former is that of his marriage. Among a dozen or so legatees named in the 1599 will of Robert Carpenter of Newton Toney is Richard Carpenter of “Aymsbury” (relationship not stated), quite possibly the man of that name who married Alice Knight (see Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 93 Kidd, fol. 47 [FHL 0,092,005]). Evidence of this or of the couple’s being Providence William’s parents is not found, however. The apparent family connection between Robert Carpenter of Newton Toney and Richard Carpenter of Amesbury nevertheless tends to diminish further the likelihood that the latter was the son of Robert Carpenter of Marden (see Appendix 1, paragraph 3, above). (The author was alerted to the above-cited marriage and probate records and their potential implications by John R. Carpenter. While his CD unfortunately omits any qualifying language in presenting Alice Knight as the wife of Richard of Amesbury and mother of William1 of Providence [it also gives her an unsupported Sussex origin], he informally acknowledges that this is not confirmed [see _Encyclopedia of Carpenters_ (note 51), file 91sd, no. 92].) _[7]_ (#_ftnref7) Hubbard, “Early Records of the Arnold Family” [note 59], _Register_ 33:428; Bartlett, _Records of the Colony of Rhode Island_ [note 6], 1:19-20; Glenn W. In a message dated 2/25/2008, John Mac Carpenter writes: << My Joseph, son of Wm of Providence and son-in-law of Wm of Rehoboth was born in RI 1635/38 and died in Muscetta Cove NY 1695. >> Joseph2 Carpenter was born about 1638, probably at Providence Plantation (not 1635, in England), and died at Musketa Cove (then a plantation in Oyster Bay Township; now the town of Glen Cove, Nassau County), Long Island, Province of New York, between 15 or 17 February 1682[/3] and 15 March 1683/4, son of William1 and Elizabeth (Arnold) Carpenter of Providence (Pawtuxet section, now in Cranston), Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. On 3 May 1656, Joseph2 Carpenter witnessed a deed of Pawtuxet (Providence) land from his maternal uncle Stephen2 Arnold to Joseph’s father, William1 Carpenter (_The Early Records of the Town of Providence_, 21 vols. [Providence, 1892-1915], 1:44–45). It has been supposed that Joseph was then an adult and thus was born about 1635, prior to his parents’ emigration from England (see, for example, Carpenter [1901], 8–9, 30, 31; Arnold, _Arnold Memorial_ [1935], 9, 52; _RI Roots_ 13:75). It cannot be assumed, however, that Joseph was an adult when he witnessed the deed. Witnesses as young as fourteen (the age of discretion) are found in early New England records. When on 9 February 1657 Joseph, his brother Ephraim, and sister Lydia witnessed a deed of Pawtuxet (Warwick) land from an Indian sachem to their father, at least two and probably all three siblings were minors (see Bamberg and Fiske, eds., _More Early Records of the Town of Warwick, Rhode Island_ [Boston, 2001], 80–81). The most reliable approximation of Joseph’s birth date is based on a deposition that he and Benjamin Smith gave on 16 October 1664 (_Harris Papers_, Collections of the Rhode Island Historical Society, vol. 10 [Providence, 1902], 72–73). Its description of Joseph as “Aged 26 yeeres” implies a birth year of about 1638 and Providence as his probable birthplace. For a detailed discussion of this and related issues—the immigration of William1 Carpenter of Providence (ca. 1636, as a single man) and his marriage to Elizabeth Arnold (ca. 1637, probably at Providence)—see _The New England Historical and Genealogical Register_ 159:67–68. Two Musketa Cove proprietors’ records, respectively dated 13 and 15 February 1682[/3], indicate that Joseph was still living at this time (_Oyster Bay Town Records_, 8 vols. [N.Y., 1916-1940], 1:640–41). (Both follow on the same page a record dated 28 December 1682.) Three others, apparently recorded at or very near the same time as the foregoing ones, probably extend by two days the 15 February date, the latest on which Joseph is known with certainty to have been alive: all three are dated 17 February 1682 [probably 1682/3] (ibid., 1:642–44). On 15 March 1683/4, William1 Carpenter of Providence added to his will a codicil in which his son Joseph is described as deceased (PrTR 6:138– 48, at 147–48). Joseph2's namesake son also died well before 1695: On 9 September 1687, Joseph3 Carpenter made a quitrent payment to provincial authorities on behalf of the Town of Oyster Bay (_Oyster Bay Town Records_, 2:337 [also 1:307–8]). But he was “late deceased” when a “memorandum” of the birth, on 16 Oct. 1685, of his “Eldest son and Heire,” Joseph4, was recorded at the top of a page also containing a record dated 6 January 1691 [probably 1691/2] (ibid., 2:350– 51). Joseph4's birth was probably recorded soon after his father's death (by 1691) and almost certainly after the birth of the latter's only other known child, Thomas, on "8 mo. [October (not August)], 16th day, 1687" (see Frost, _The Haviland Genealogy_ [Jamaica, N.Y., 1914], 186, citing family record). The record is worded so as to clarify that Joseph4--not his brother, Thomas--was (in keeping with the law of primogeniture) entitled to inherit his father's estate. My Joseph, son of Wm of Providence and son-in-law of Wm of Rehoboth was born in RI 1635/38 and died in Muscetta Cove NY 1695. There are a lot of Joseph's in his descendancy but not in my ancestry. However I do have Roxanna's in my family, supposedly beginning with a woman who married my great granduncle, Alva Francis Carpenter, b 1828 Cameron Steuben county NY. His brother John, my great grand father b 1828 in Steuben county named a son Alva Francis (my grandfather) and a daughter Mary Roxanna. Then Alva Francis (Frank) named his first child Mary Roxanna, and his sister Mary Roxanna who married Lorenzo Dow Fox in WI, named a son Alva. There is still a Roxanna, a first cousin once removed of mine who lives in Houston TX. There is probably no connection between my Roxannas and your Roxie Ann, though you never know. Dick, I can't take you to our connection but our DNA says it's there. -----Original Message----- From: carpenter-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:carpenter-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Brad & Bonnie Kershaw Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2008 3:12 PM To: carpenter@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CARPENTER] FW: [PAYNE] Mensa Geneology Colloquium Sept 2008 John and Meralyn, Do either of you have any mention of a RoxeyAnn Carpenter (b Oct. 1812; married Asahel Luther) or an Alfred Madison Carpenter (b.
