    2. The Carpenters
    3. Jan, I will be better able to answer this when I locate the parents and siblings of my John CARPENTER, b. 1797 in VT. He had three sons: Samuel, wounded twice in the Civil War; Giles, killed in action (naval, acc. to family story) in Civil War; and James, my GGgrandfather. G.B. may very well be a son of Giles or Samuel, or the grandson of one of my John's siblings. I will try to keep you informed. 3. David, It could tie in, but first I need to find out what siblings my John CARPENTER, b. 1797 in VT had. I suspect once we find his parents and siblings, a lot of connections may fall into place. Meantime, all I can do is speculate and/or guess. I'll keep you informed as I find my John C. 2. Mary Carpenter
    3. Regarding Penny's info: "...John's children were Caleb, ...Caleb marries ...Rebecca Olds probably in Genesee County NY. ...Caleb and Rebecca had three children: Amasa Green, Charles and Rebecca J. ..." I am looking for an AMASA CARPENTER and any of his children. The Amasa I am looking for supposedly had a brother named ASA who may have been the direct descendent to me, rather than Amasa. Or neither of them may be who I am looking for. My line is certain (see below) from me to Alonzo (Elanson)my g.g.grandfather. But I have no definite proof of Alonzo's parents. Amasa is a "best fit" that one researcher found for us. If anyone can help especially with the NY to MI connection, it would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the length of this. According to the family history I received from a cousin, our line is descended from Wm. of Rehoboth who came to America in 1638 on the Bevis. Continuing the line (son to son) is: Samuel (b.1635?; d. ~1682, Rehoboth, MA) Samuel (b.1661, Rehoboth, MA; d.~1736, Rehoboth) Samuel (b.1684, Rehoboth, MA; d.aft.1721, Pomfert, CT) Samuel (b.~1716, Pomfert, CT; d.~1753/58 Pomfert, CT) Samuel (b.1757, Pomfert, CT; d.1798, Thompson, CT) *AMASA* (b.1783, Thompson, CT; d.aft. 1850, Sandy Crk. Oswego Co., NY) (AMASA's brother ASA is of interest too, since either one may be the direct relative to me. *Asa* b.1795, Thompson, CT; d.?) Alonzo (Elanson?) (b. 1812, Corinth Twp., Saratoga Co., NY; d.? m. Julia FORBES 1850, she died 1899 in St. Charles, MI) Cass (b. 1851, St. Charles, MI; d. 1925, Calhoun Co., MI; m. Czarina A. BUCKLAND 1877 in Chesaning, MI) Frank Isaac (b. 1882, Chesaning, MI; d. 1945, Sparta, WI; m. Catherine Pommerich in WI) Clarence Frank (b. 1922, Longwood Twp, Clark Co., WI; d. 1995, Abbotsford, WI) Mary Cathryn (ME!) (b. 1960, Abbotsford, WI; presently living in Flagstaff, AZ) I am also looking for Frank's brother John, who moved to British Columbia, Canada. Born Sept. 1880, St. Charles Twp, MI; d.Oct. 9, 1940 in either Smithers, B.C. or "Pacific B1", B.C. Thanks! Mary Carpenter _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Well Carpenter kin, I ask for your assistance again. If I can't trace back then I'll try going forward. I'm looking for the descendants of Robert Carpenter b. abt 1760 (of the Musketa Cove Carpenters). His sons were Abraham, Caleb, David, and Jacob. Did any of these boys have a son John b. abt 1803-4? They all ended up in Duanesburg(h) NY in Schenectady Co.. My GGG grandfather George Carpenter had a brother David b. abt 1825 who lived in Duanesburgh in the late 1840s to 1850s. It is supposed that Henry, David and George were all brothers and that John was their father. They all ended up residing in the town of Broome in Schoharie County NY. Different records have conflicting counties of birth for these 4. Thanks brethren.

    1. RE: Which Joseph married Judith Scott
    2. I am more and more of the opinion that she married Joseph Junior. Think about it. Women were scarce on the frontier. She could have had her pick. She was a young widow with small children. Which would most women choose in that circumstances? A strong young man? Or an old man with a large nearly grown family. The records do not show which Joseph she married. And Joseph Junior DID have a daughter named Judith. Many families named daughters after their mothers but would he really have named a daughter after his father's second wife? Sue "It was said she held a grudge until it died of old age, and then had it stuffed and mounted...." David Weber

    1. The Will of Joseph Carpenter Jr
    2. I was able to obtain the will of Joseph Carpenter Jr from Botetourt Co., Va dated 21 Jan 1792. As soon as I get time, I'll try to put it on the net. It's very interesting, listing the names of all his children. BTW, I have not yet tried to get his wife's will, dated a couple of years later. Does anyone know the legalities of wills in Virginia at that time? Was it necessary to list and grant something to all the children? He gave each of his daughters only 10 shillings each, split everything else between his two sons and his wife. The abstract I have of his wife's will only lists a couple of the daughters. With evidently no mention of the others. I suspect she is a second (or third) wife and wonder if she could have only listed her own children. If the law at that time made it mandatory to grant something to each child, then this would help me tremendously. Also, tradition has it that John had French in his background. I think that my John may be the son of Caleb CARPENTER and Rhoda DYER. If their John was born first, and the second one was 1799, that fits about perfectly the fairly natural 2-year time between children. At two years apart, John would have been fourteen when the last sibling was born. It wouldn't have taken much to make him old enough to go out on his own when (or even before) Caleb moved to Ohio. My John ended up married to an Irish girl, moved from VT to DeRuyter, NY, and had a family there. His son, James, ended up in Plainview, Wabasha Co., MN. James' son, Osmer Harold CARPENTER, and some of his brothers and, for a short time, James himself, homesteaded in the Arlington and DeSmet areas of Kingsbury Co., SD. Thus, our route would be (RI); VT; NY; MN; SD. Please send me whatever other information you might think will fill in the blanks. I will be glad to share my material with you, too. Do you have any dates such as when the second marriage occurred, or the move to Ohio? This could be paydirt for me, and then we can push it back together, maybe-cousin. Besides, I have had the same disappointment in getting a tie-in to the Big Two families, so maybe we can begin the Big Three. George --- George R.
