    1. Town Clerk's possible ancestors
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. In the library of the University of Washington is an extensive collection of English state papers from the middle ages, consisting of law cases and tax records. There are well over a hundred thick blue volumes, each many hundreds of pages. There is much Carpenter related. Today I will present a sample from three volumes entitled CALENDAR OF THE CLOSE ROLLS, from the late 1200s, the time prior to John Carpenter the Town Clerk and his father Richard. My object is to find material suggestive of their origins. A very wealthy individual discovered was a Edward le Carpenter or Charpenter and his son Robert. The pair are noted in many legal proceedings. Edward and Robert are residents of Middlesex Co. a traditional residential area for wealthy London merchants. Edward's identity as a foreign resident is immediately sugested by the Charpenter name, which is used in at least half the references to him. Son Robert is cited in a law suit with "merchants of Amiens". Edwards assets extend to holdings in London itself. In a 1289 security for a loan, his "lands and chattels in the city of London" are cited, as well as elsewhere his " lands and chattels in Co. Middlesex." Witnesses to Edward's financial dealings are seemingly very powerful individuals such as a Earl of Cornwall in one proceeding. Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter

    1. Re: Where do these Carpenters belong?
    2. I think I asked this question before..... I have a Bemsley Carpenter who died February 22, 1853 at age 77 years old. His wife Olive died March 30, 1850 at 64 years old. They are buried at the Madison Center Cemetery, Madison, Ohio. Also, does anyone claim Thomas Cerpenter who died 17 August, 1851 at age 25? (He is buried at Madison Township Cemetery, Madison Ohio.) He was the husband of Almeda Maria Genung. They had children: Alice M. Carpender who married Charles Moak, and also a son Henry T. Carpender who married and lived in Dubuque, Iowa. Anyone know where this line fits? I also need to find the line in which Charlts Carpenter/der fits. He was born c. 1785 and died in 1854 in Michigan. He married Sally Lewis. If anyone knows where these two Carpenters "belong", please let me know. THANKS, Jan Skinner gumpysfarm@aol.com

    3. Got this from the AVERY list : ******** Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 18:35:47 -0700 From: Sharilyn Whitaker <sharilyn@northcoast.com> Dear Listers, About 1794, Lucinda AVERY married John CARPENTER (born 6 January 1775 in Stafford, Tolland County, CT). I should judge that she was born around 1776, and probably also in or near Stafford, Tolland County, CT, but she could have been from Huron County, Ohio. John and LUCINDA AVERY Carpenter had: 1. Sarah Carpenter for which I have no birthdate 2. Stephen Carpenter 1795 3. Elias Carpenter 1797 4. John Carpenter 1803 5. Polly (Probably Mary) Carpenter 1807 6. Reuben Carpenter 1808 7. Ruth Carpenter 1809 (married 1st Eggleston, 2nd Samuel Alpha Olmstead) LUCINDA AVERY died before 1813, in Fairfield Township, Huron County, Ohio. John Carpenter then remarried Sarah Adams, and had more children. He died in 1859 in Fairfield. Any help with Lucinda would be sincerely appreciated. 3. Hi Robin, This is a line that has been dropped recently because it supposedly has been proven wrong. I have not yet found any proof for either line from Timothy2 on back and continue to look for it. There are varying explanations but when it comes right down to documenting neither side has the nitty gritty proof. For those who would like to see the pages I include my transcription with the warning to take no line as absolute until you have the proof in hand. This is a very controversial source so I send it with a WARNING to verify everything you can with original sources. The parentage of Timothy(2) is very much in dispute. CARPENTER Usher, James. Genealogical and Historical Record of the Carpenter Family with a Brief Genealogy of Some of the Descendants of William Carpenter of Weymouth and Rehoboth, Massachusetts; William Carpenter of Providence, Rhode Island; Samuel Carpenter of Pennsylvania and Ephraim, Timothy and Josias Carpenter of Long Island. Including a Full Complete and Reliable History of the Carpenter Estate of England. (1883). CS/71/C3/1883 "The Carpenter Family of Long Island and New York" page 30 About the year 1540, one Cotleb Zimmerman emigrated from Prussia to England, where he married and settled. The name changed into English is Caleb Carpenter. He had a family of children, one of whom was named Ezra, who also married and had issue; among others, Elihu, who married young and reared a large family. When he was quite advanced in years, the Society of Friends or Quakers arose, with whom he joined, and in consequence he was greatly persecuted and maltreated. He finally fled with his family, children and grandchildren, taking refuge in Holland, where he remained a considerable time, until the persecution abated, when most of them returned to England. >From the above circumstances, it was supposed that the Carpenter family originated in Holland, and it is believed that some of them remained in Holland, and they, with other English exiles, established Quakerism there. Ephraim and Josias acquired title to lands. According to Thompson's History of Long Island, Ephraim and Josias purchased land in the town of Oyster Bay, on Long Island, N.Y., on th 9th of January, 1685, some six years after their arrival in this country. On the 26th of May 1663, the Indians sold a part of Mantinecock to Capt. John Underhill, John Frost and William Frost; another part on the 20th of April, 1669, to Richard Lating; another part on the 1st of December, 1685 to Thomas Townsend, and on the 9th of January, 1685, the chiefs, namely, Sucanemen alias Runusuck Chechayen, alias Quaropin Samase (son of Tackapausha), being empowered by the rest of the Indians, conveyed the residue of Mantinecock, together with some other lands, for the price of sixty pounds of current merchantable pay, to James Cook, Joseph Dickenson, Robert Townsend, Stephen Birdsall, James Townsend, Daniel Weeks, Issac Doughty, John Wood, Edmund Wright, Caleb Wright, Joh Wright, William Frost, and John Newman: and thereupon the said grantees agreed to accept as joint purchasers with them the following named persons, being then acknowledged inhabitants and freeholders of the town, comprising the most complete list of names at the time which the records present. Among some forty-eight names appear the names of Josias and Ephraim Carpenter. It appears that Ephraim and Josias Carpenter purchased lands in Oyster Bay, which joins Hempstead on the north. Timothy Carpenter, when he arrived in America was only thirteen years old and was too young to purchase land or participate in Page 35 municipal affairs. It appears he engaged in the cooperage business, in which his grandson, William and his gret-grandson, Seaman also engaged in. Timothy Carpenter, being a Quaker or Friend, was not allowed to have any kind of monument erected to mark his palce of burial. No family plots for burial were allowed; they were interred in rows, without regard to relationship, side by side. For this reason it is impossible to find his burial place. The town records of Hempstead, Long Island were destroyed by fire on the 31st of October, 1797. Timothy Carpenter, second son of the above Timothy 1st, removed from Hempstead, some fifty miles distant, to North Castle, in the County of Westchester, N.Y., where he purchased a farm on which he resided until his death, and was interred in the Quaker burial grounds at Chapaqua. His will was dated July 21, 1763, admitted to probate August 30, 1769, and is recorded in the Surrogate's office in the city of New York. The above has been furnished by W.C. Barker. It is believed that it is a branch of the Massachusetts family, as Joseph, the eldest son of William, of Providence, settled on Long Island in 1664. Full Citation from NEGHS: CARPENTER Usher, James. Its title page says it's about the descendants of both the Rehoboth and Providence Williams. But on pp 30-32, Usher describes a line of Carpenter I've not heard of before. Briefly: Ezra (1570 - ?) Wales, England Richard (? - ?) Ephraim (1623 - ?) Timothy (1665 - ?) Immigrant to America 1678 m. Mercy Coles of Glen Cove NY John C. b. 1690 Huldah b. 1692 Jephtha b. 1693 Benjamin b. 1696 Timothy(2) b. 1698 m. Phoebe Carpenter (desc R.I. Carpenters) ...and so on. What I'm wondering is this: (a) is this an entirely separate line of immigrant Carpenters? Up to now I've only known of three immigrant lines...William of Rehoboth, William of Pawtuxet, and the German-Swiss Zimmerman/Carpenters of Lancaster PA. And then (b) if Usher is describing a 3rd and distinct line (distinct, i.e., aside from intermarriage with other lines as for Timothy(2) above), am I the only one in the dark about this? I do recognize some familiar names in the Usher tree, as with Zeno Carpenter (b.1672) and Seaman Carpenter (b.1760), but these names are familiar (to me) because they also show up in the Mosketo Cove (ex. Pawtuxet) line...via Timothy(2)'s marriage to Hannah Carpenter of Mosketo Cove. Any help out there? Robin

    3. My husband's Carpenter line is exactly like that. They moved to NC from PA in 1700s: Mathias Zimmerman/Carpenter b about 1750 in PA or Germany. Changed name in NC in about 1770 to Carpenter. He died in 1835 in Ashe Cty NC. ( m. Elizabeth Miller b about 1753 in Bucks Cty, PA.) 3. After several years finally found info on JEREMIAH CARPENTER (b. 1819 Lancaster Co, PA d. 1907 Ellis, NE) who married SUSAN CROSS (b. 1819 Boonesboro, MD d. 1902 Ellis, NE). I'm looking for HENRY CARPENTER, Jeremiah's father. All I know about him is that he died in Lancaster Co, PA. Any suggestions? I think the same Cross family may fit into my tree on my maternal and paternal sides. Does anyone else have Cross and Carpenter in their family tree? I believe Boonesboro MD is close to Lancaster Co PA. Thanks for any assistance. Sara Carpenter Johnston

    1. John the Town Clerk and tallage
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. Connections between John the Town Clerk, his wife Kathrine, John's parents and the flourishing foreign community of merchants in London can readily by seen. First three tiers of people inhabited London in the period. First were citizens, a legal status, which John claimed for himself. Second were the denizens, groups of permanent resident foreigners. Lastly were the aliens. This second and third group of individuals resided in special areas of London, the Picards in their neighborhood, the Italians in theirs and the Flemings in another. When special taxes were levied on these groups, called tallage, many of these people made written protest. The documents survive and we can easily see what areas of London the foreign business people lived. One such area was Cornhill, where John choose to reside. His parents were members of a Cornhill church and were buried there. Kathrine Carpenter's will also reveals her connections with two additional neighborhoods with a high number of denizens, perhaps with connections to her own probable denizen family. The fact that John Carpenter became town Clerk at all, implies a connection to foreign trade. One needn't be an English citizen at all to be even the Mayor of London. In the 1300s a Picard wine Merchant was mayor of both London and Calais at the same time! Another factor with these groups of people are the loans they made to the crown. Any military adventure, and there were many, had to be financed with foreign money. Did the Carpentiers become the Carpenters and English citizens, with a town clerk's position as well as a very important bishop's postion, though the financial backing of the English crown? Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter

    3. The Flemish and Low Country origins of the Herefordshire Carpenters in England was accepted as fact in the greatest work of 19th century French genealogy, the Dictionnaire De La Noblesse by De Le Chenaye-Desbois et Badier, printed in Paris, 1868. There is no mention of the Paris DeMelun family. The family line is traced back well before any possible connection to William The Carpenter DeMelun. Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter

    2. The Carpenters
    3. Warren, Did Jesse, b. abt 1794 in VT have a brother John, b. 1797 in VT? I have been looking for the ancestors of my GGGgrandfather John. John settled in the Sheds/DeRuyter area of Madison County, NY, but no one has been able to push it back to include his ancestry. Information that would surely help would include where in VT they were born and names of their siblings. Does anyone have any info that would help us? *** Here's one suggestion: I hope to spend some time this summer in Madison Co., NY, and environs, and perhaps in VT, if I can get a lead or two. So if you have a CARPENTER born in VT in the late 1700s or early 1800s, or even born in NY around the 1820s or so (the next generation), but with some hint of Vermont in the background, or living in the general area of Chenango/Madison Counties, NY, without apparent predecessors, please send me whatever info you may have. I will try to see if I can put together some sort of "theoretical family" that can be traced back a generation. I will share what I end up with with the list, whether or not I can put something together and find these mysterious ancestors. *** This has been a major brick wall in our tree (mixed that metaphor nicely, didn't I?). Hope we can get over it or around it. School is out in three weeks, and if I'm still in one piece, I can take time to give all of this some thought. George --- George R.
