    1. Carpenter Pirates
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. In the 1300s war raged between Flanders and France. The victims were often Merchants of one or the other. Finally in 1333 a treaty was concluded in England to protect financial interests of all three nations. In 1305 the following curious incident is recorded in the Calendar of Patent Rolls, concerns a French ship lost in a storm on the Dorcet coast. All hands were saved. However a crowd of individuals, a great many of which with foreign sounding names, decended on the hapless ship and "entered the ship, carried away the goods, broke the ship and cut it to pieces." Among those listed were Robert le Carpenter, Edward le Carpenter, Martin le Carpenter, William le Carpenter and John le Carpenter. Flemmings helping themselves to the goods of the enemy? Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter

    1. Carpenters and Edward lll/Philippa
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. While the exact dates during the rule of Edward lll are not given, the following from the Calendar of Inquisitions is given for a "John, son of John le Carpenter" at Oxford. "Stanton Seynt John. Two parts of a messuage and of a virgate of land (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a two hundred and forty-fourth part of a knight's fee." We cannot assume that knight John Carpenter, previously in the service of King Edward lll, actually lived in Stanton St. John in Oxford. He might of had several parcels of land, living elsewhere, as was the custom of the day. The citation goes on to read, "His sisters, Mary, aged 18 years, and Maud, aged 13 years, are his next heirs." Here again we cannot assume that Maud and Mary were his only heirs. The correct assumption is that females were given minor parcels of land at the death of a relative, and that the main assets or patrimony, passed to the eldest son or similar male, intact. In another volume of Calendar of Inquisitions (this one material precisely dated), the following appears for Co. Sussex, Oct. 6th, 1356. "Agnes daughter of Carpenter 4 acres..... the manor is held of Queen Philippa as ...." Here is another female getting a minor parcel of land at her father's death. It is of course entirely possible that this Agnes is another daughter of the first cited John Carpenter. I suspect she was. What is interesting, is the tie with the FLemmish Queen Phillippa. Another citation for quotes a tract of land for a daughter Isabel in Seteryington "worth 12d. yearly." The whole historical picture should be kept in mind here. Edward and Philippa represented a military and economic alliance between England and Flanders against the French in the Hundred Year's War. The House of Lancaster's subsequent struggles and history, were directly the result of these events. The Carpenter family was allied to the House of Lancaster and is interconnected to all these events. Yours, Bruce E. Carpenter We can assume this John Carpenter, having been a knight in the service of Edward lll and Queen Philippa, was an individual of considerable means

    1. Early Carpenters and Wool
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. In the Calendar of Patent Rolls for 1272 to1281 there is an important list of "licenses to export wool". The individuals onthe list were all major players in the English economy, and also crown revenue, of the day. One exporter, and a major importer as I mentioned previously, liscensed May 12 1273, was "John le Carpenter, merchant." It seems interesting to me that this individual was already a merchant. One can immediately assume tat anyone on this list was an individual of major means and a member of a family group engaged in similar activities. Yours, Bruce E. Carpenter

    1. Homme at Dilwyn
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. It appears Homme at Dilwyn in Herefortshire was a manor with some history. In the time of Edward lll (early 1300s) the following reference appears in the Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem for Herefordshire. I quote, "Homme by Dylewe (Dilwyn). 4a. land held of (Robert) Broun by service of 1d. yearly." It goes on to say, "He died in parts beyond the sea, viz in Brittany." This is to suggest that Mr. Broun was a knight in service during the foreign wars of the 1300s. The next paragraph states that, 'parcel of the manor of Dylewe, which is held of the of the Earl of Lancaster." The Earl of Lancaster conducted the wars in France for Henry lll. Thus we can conclude that the Homme in Dilwyn was Lancastrian land, parceled out in return for knight service in the 1300s. Keep in mind that the Carpenters in subsequent years were firmly within the Lancastrian camp and household. Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter

Thanks Glenda THIS IS A BIBLE RECORD FOUND IN A PERIODIACAL OF SHARP CO ARK (USED TO BE LAWRENCE CO) Submitted by Mrs. Helen Carpenter Davenport, P.O. box 10285, Springfield, Mo 65808. The folowing is a transcription of all entries in a bible handed down from Robert Carpenter, A pioneer settler of Sharp Co, Ark. Number in parentheses in right margin refer to numbered notes below.......... First Page A very large RC Second page Thomas M. The earliest record of Robert Carpenter found by this researcher is in the 1840 census for Henderson Co. Ten, where he appears as head of a household consistant with the above bible record. He is also listed in the 1850 census in henderson Co. with his wife Matilda and all of the children appearing on the seconc page of the bible record. Only one book of land record survived the Sivil war days in Henderson co. it contains a record where Robert Carpenter sold 250 acres of land to Edmond Gawf; withnessed John a Criner and Elias Goff. This deed is dated 8 Oct 1851 and recorded 8 Jan 1856. Adjoining property owneres wer Stephen Hefley, Jackson Petty, Daniel Mayberry, EdmonGawfs, and James Long. I believe Robert Carpenter ws running a store at the time of the 1840 census as his occupation was categorized as "trade or Manufacturing". Evidently he left Henderson County after 1851 and before 1865. By the beginning of the Civil War the entire family had settled at Maxville in Lowrence (now Sharp )Co. Ark. Where theyand many of their descendants remained. 2. Thomas M. Carpenter md Rebecca Clements by whome he had one son, Francis M. Carpenter b. July 1862. 1st Lt. Thomas M. Carpenter, 21 st ark Infantry died 19 June 1863. He had been amoung the wounded left at Corinth the preceeding winter, was captured and imprisoned at Iuka, Miss. 3. On some record Sarah appears as Sarah A. It is not known what became of her. ( Glenda's Note: see note 10 and the following 1870 census where Sarah A ROBISON is listed with Mary and Robert in Sharp Co. Ark. I think they might be one and the same don't you Faith?) 4. James Harden Carpenter with wife Eliza are listed in Sharp County, Ark. in 1870. Then removed to Childress, Texas. 5. Rodise Carpenter married James DEAVENPORT. In 1860 they were living in Ash Flat, Arkansas, and James was teaching school. At that time they had a one year old son Charles H. Deavenport. Later children were Dani Mary, and James. Rodise was widowed by 1880 6. Edmon Carpenter married Mary Debbie McCord Campbell, d/o Joseph m. McCord of Maxville. Their children were Joseph Robert, Nancy M., Isabell, James F. Horatio, Clarenda A., Filmore, and perhaps others. Most of the Carpenters in the south part of Sharp County descend from this family. 7. Martha Jane probably md. a Shirley and is the mother of John Clayton Shirley of the bible record. If so, she must have died soon after his birth as he would not otherwise have been raised by his grandparents. 8. Mary Carpenter md. a Mr. Anderson from Poukeepsie, Arkansas. After his death she mad the home with her nephew Joseph Robert in Cave City where she lived for many years known affectionately as Aunt Mary. She buried as Aunt Mary in the cemetery at Maxville beside her brother Edmond. 9. The only known record of Henry Carpenter is in this bible and the 1850 census 10. This and the following two entries are evidently grandchildren who Robert elected to enter in his bible. Other grandchildren are not entered. Mary Jane DEVENPROT May have been a daughter of Rodise (who would have been 15 years, 2 mo old at the time of birth). Otherwise, she must be the daughter of Sarah which is entirely possible.( GLENDA'S NOTE: This is what I believe) 11. As this entry is immediately following Mary Jane DEVENPORT and at the time would have been on a page with on other entries, this researcher concludes that the full name shoud be STEPEN ROBERT DEVENPORT. In any event, no record of either child has been found outside of thei bible. (GLENDA'S NOTE: With the exact same birthday also, I believe this is our Robert Stephen DAVENPORT) 12. All entries up to this point have ben in the same handwrithing, evidently that of Robert Carpenter, and in the old-fasioned style know as "round". This entry is in the beautiful Spencerian style used by both Thomas and Edmond Carpenter. James Clayton Shirley was raised by his Carpenter grandparents. *********** Lawrence Co. 3. Eve Ann CARPENTER (1827-1888) married William MORRIS (1821-1885) in Bourbon Co., KY in 1843. Eve Ann CARPENTER had two brothers: George Daniel CARPENTER (1832-1881) and William H. CARPENTER (1828-1851). William H. CARPENTER was killed in Louisville after having served in the war with Mexico. His obituary states that he was orphaned at a young age, and partially raised by his uncle, George W. DUNLAP, ESQ. (perhaps either an attorney or a wealthy land owner) of Louisville, KY. In about 1845, Eve Ann (Carpenter) MORRIS and William MORRIS moved from KY to Henderson Co., IL. George Daniel CARPENTER also moved with this family. I'm requesting help finding the parents of this family. There is a possibility that William MORRIS's father was John, mother unknown. The parents of the CARPENTER children were probably Daniel CARPENTER and Esther DUNLAP (?). I don't have a clue as to any other information pertaining to George W. DUNLAP, or which branch of the huge DUNLAP family he came from. Any help, suggestions, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Keith Morris...in Suffolk, VA kmorris@hroads.net

    1. Rehoboth William's Grave
    2. Bruce E. Carpenter
    3. A day before attending my middle son's graduation from private school in Connecticut, I drove for a day's explorations to Rehoboth, Seekonk and East Providence. I quickly found the the most important site for we Rehoboth Carpenters, and that is the Samuel Newmann Congregational Church in East Providence, just over the line from Seekonk. The church was founded by our William in the 1640s. The lady in the church office was glad to hear I was a Carpenter. She in fact has Carpenter relatives. The whole area is rife with Carpenter Streets, Carpenter Hills and Carpenter whatevers. She supplied this pilgrim with a good map to William's grave, located in the church graveyard directly across the street. I was unprepared for what I found and profoundly moved. One enters the stonewalled gate, then moves along a dirt roadway. One hundred feet or so in, and on the left, are the well known grave markers with the Cobham Arms. Close by, by the way, are graves of Carpenter related groups, like the Bowens, who used the Cobham Arms also. Hundreds of early Carpenters lie at rest in the immediate proximity. However, directly across the dirt pathway-road, and not twenty feet, are the very early Carpenters. William's stone marker is no longer extant, although wife Abagail's is, being an extremely crude triangular stone with A.C. carved upon it. Willaim and son Samuel lie on either side. What is truely remarkable however, is five generations of subsequent descendants, who are buried in circles around these three. I paid special attention to the Samuel group, because I descend from them. They seemed all to be there, which said to me this was an extremely closeknit family group for almost two hundred years. They must have all worshipped at the Newmann church. I found the indian Carpenter, Martha Hunt Carpenter and her husband Stephen, not more than fifteen feet from William's resting place. Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter Clinton, WA
