Hello Robin, You mentioned that Jonathan Carpenter is your 3rd Great-grandfather in your message to Louis. Is there any chance that an Elizabeth Carpenter, my 3rd Great-grandmother, was in your Jonathan's line? Elizabeth was born in Orange County (we think) on November 15, 1812 and she married Robert Lamoreaux (Lamoureoux/Lamereux/Lamoreux/etc.). Their first five children were born in Bedford, Westchester County, NY (Henry, Hannah, Mary, Elisa, Isaac) and then they moved on to Indiana where two more children were born. Thanks, Susan Cary
Randolph County Marriage Records show Lyhua Carpenter M. John Forrest Jan. 5, 1806 Married by John Skidmore Also mentioned in Sutton's "History of Braxton County" See Jeremiah Carpenter descendants on www.rootsweb.com/~wvbraxto/1836bctx.html In all my years of searching, this is the first time I have heard any mention of Rosina Carpenter! I believe the Harrison County Carpenters were German and not related to Jeremiah Carpenter of Elk River History. I believe Margaret Carpenter was related to Nicholas Carpenter. It was mentioned that Jeremiah Carpenter had a brother Amos, but I do not find him in census or other VA/WV sources. If this is new information and can be proved, I would be pleased and so would many other researchers. er researchers.
Louis: Here's a tidbit that probably won't help--in that it's a NY connection--but anyway is a Carpenter-Reeves connection: My 3rd great grandfather was Jonathan Carpenter (7/24/1785-6/2/1835). He was born in Orange Cty NY, and moved to North Moreland PA about 1812. He married (in NY, date unknown to me) Abigail Reeves, daughter of James Reeve(s) (1760-?), who was the son of Deacon James Reeve by his 2nd wife Mary Moore (dau of David Moore). Many/most of the Reeve(s) family resided at Slate Hill in Goshen NY. Deacon James Reeve(5)'s paternal lineage (going backwards) was Stephen Reeve(4), John Reeve(3), James Reeve(2)...whose father (#1, name unknown to me) is said to have immigrated from Wales c.1660. Deacon James had 15 kids by his 1st wife (Mary Corwin) and 3 more, including son James, with Mary Moore. Robin C

Fellow Carpenter researchers: I am looking for any connection, i.e., deeds (including witnessing deeds), marriage bonds, wills, probate, between the CARPENTERS and REEVES (Reaves, Rives, Rieves) in the 1700's. I already have a Mary CARPENTER on William REEVES of Granville Co, NC will in 1751. Any other connection would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Louis Carpenter
Hi everyone. Is anyone researching Emanuel Carpenter b. 1744 d. 1822 m. Mary Smith or any of his ancestors or descendands? He is grandson of Heinrich Zimmerman aka Henry Carpenter. I need some help on some dates and locations. Linda
Subj: Re: Special Notice I AM sorry about that but I did in fact NOT intend to send it out to other LISTS that I subscribe to and was sifting through my address book in AOL, not really paying attention and hit the wrong button, didn't notice that I had and when I hit SEND I still didn't notice. I can only plead the distraction of suddenly realizing dinner was burning. It was specifically intended for certain individuals and for David-Davis@onelist and for my own list DavisCorner NEXT TIME dinner can burn. I process batches of Howell and Davis surnames through DavisCorner, since Jeff Davis and Varina Howell are the main focus of DavisCorner, IN THAT I've met many people who have a Family Tale that the family is related to Jeff/Varina, just as my family does (Varina Howell) and my husband's family does (Jeff Davis) and since I'm trying to track that down myself to prove or disprove the connection I decided to set up DavisCorner. But the offer stands, if you have a Howell or a Davis in your famgen I will be glad to run a fast search for you for clues on at least where to look next, and will put your query in my own digest, DavisCornr (covers both Howell & Davis surnames). Rosana/Rosina Carpenter born 1788 in VA or PA married John Forest/Forrest, date and place unknown. They show up in Meigs Co OH in 1820. Rosana/Rosina married twice after John's death in 1829. She married Leonard Cooper and John Gilpin in Meigs Co. The only clue I have for her comes from Rev War Period Bible, Family and Marriage Records from Pension Applications Vol 6 where it says: "Amos Carpenter married Margaret McGlaughlin 18 Feb 1803 by Elder Jacob Cozar at West Fork settlement Harrison Co VA." In 1853, Rosina Gilpin gave a statement that she was the nurse of Margaret Carpenter's when her son Jeremiah was born and that she was invited to the marriage "but could not cross the creek on account of the high rise." Any help/clues/advice in finding more info on this Carpenter family would be greatly appreciated. PENNY PENNYPEACE@prodigy.net
I have some information that will help you. Rosina and John were married in Randolph County, (W)VA, and she was the daughter of Jeremiah Carpenter who was an early settler in what became Braxton County, (W)Va. I will look up specific data and reply further as soon as I can. Dennis Rodgers
Bishop John Carpenters land transactions are on a scale befitting his station in the court of Henry Vl. The most interesting are those involving Robert Hungerford, the Baron Moleyns and third Baron Hungerford (1431-1464). In 1452 Hungerford was taken prisoner of war in France and ransomed with money obtained from the mortgage of his estates, subsequently obtaining release in 1459, the identical date of the following land transactions. Hungerford later became a chief player in the Lancastrian struggles, a fact that suggests Bishop Johns purchases were part of the attempt to obtain Hungerfords release. Robert Hungerford to John bishop of Worcester, John bishop of Lincoln, John viscount Beaumont, William lord Botreaux, John Fortescu knight chief justice, Edmund Hungerford, John Beyton knights, Gilbert Kymber dean of Salisbury, Master Andrew Hulse, Master John Perys, Master Thomas Estyngton clerks, John Saye esquire, Thomas Yonge, Simon Mylbourne ..their heirs and assigns, confirmation of their estate in the manors of Chippenham, Rowdon, Shulden,Bedyston, an Loldon and the hundreds of Chippenham On a more lighthearted note, a sale of land is recorded for 1451, which completely contrasts with the one above. John bishop of Worcester and Henry Sampson clerk, to Philip Malpas merchant, Juliana his wife, William Venour gentilman, Thomas Cooke of the Parish of St Christopher London and Ralph Josselyn draper citizens of London, their heirs and assigns. Charter with warranty of a brewhouse tenement called the Dolfyn with a tavern called the Belle and divers shops, dwellings, cellars solars, a wharf etc. in the parishes of St. Mary Magdaline and St. Olave in Southwerk co. Surrey, also of a tenement called the Bere with a taven attached, houses, shops, dwellings, cellars, solars, wharf etc. in the said parish of St. Olave, all which the grantors had jointly by demise and feoffment of David Fevian, William Davy and John Grene clerks. It is a testament of the basic difference of the Middle Ages from our own times, that an important bishop would own a brewhouse and a tavern. It would have been nice to drop in for an ale, sit down and brag to the locals that, Hey, Im a Carpenter, and my uncle the bishop owns this place! (Bruce E. Carpenter)
Things have changed a bit: 1. The Digest is now sent on Monday and Friday 2. I try to keep each portion below 20KB, and no less than 15KB. 3. I am now putting the surnames by state, so each issue of each portion with have a different state or two featured. One issue might have CA, OH-PA, and the next might have MS, AL, and so forth. Don't forget you are free to post a famgen (send it to me, and I will insert it into the next issue) so long as it has Davis or Howell in it, AND you can send queries to me - if I can do a fast net surf and find leads for you I will, but whether I can or cannot I will put your query in the next issue of the Digest. See you Monday, in a matter of speaking .... Susan Gillberg, Listowner, DavisCornr
The following quotation from the Close Rolls, January 28 1443 will reconfirm the conclusions arrived at reading the previous quotation. The players are the same. Here the king is named. However here the situation of royal assets being transferred to his household creditors is explicitly stated, if there was any doubt. To the receivers, farmers or occupiers for the time being of all lands in Cornwall of William Bodrigan knight, tenant by knight service of the king, which came to the kings hands by his death and by reason of the nonage of Henry his son and heir and yet are or ought to be in his hands. Order to pay and deliver to William earl of Suffolk, William bishop of Salisbury, Thomas Bekynton the kings secretary, John Carpenter clerk, Henry Serer clerk late provost of the college of St. Mary Eton and John Hampton esquire all that in 16 February last did or might pertain to the king by reason of the wardship of the said heir, does or now may, and shall or may hereafter pertain to him; as by letters patent of that date of his particular knowledge the king granted the same, among other things, to them and their assigns without rendering aught to him. We can make safe assumptions from these two quotations; first, that the Carpenter family was very wealthy indeed, that it used its wealth to place family members into positions of influence, and then used that influence to further its own interests. We can assume that Bishop John Carpenter owed his position to family influence. We can assume that Carpenter wealth was not based on hereditary land, therefore derived itself from trade and business on a very large scale, and therefore was international trade. (Bruce E. Carpenter)

While there are many references to the Town Clerks small scale business dealings, the most surprising and interesting are those dealing with truly large sums and powerful people. The following quotations satisfy my long held suspicions that the Town Clerk was directly involved privately with crown finances and affairs, and that the Carpenter family was a major players in the House of Lancasters rivalry and subsequent armed struggle with the House of York. Put in simple terms The Carpenter family backed king Henry Vl financially. The following provides some insight. It is from the Calendar of Close Rolls for March 20th 1442. Richard earl of Salisbury, George Lord Latymer knight, William lord Fitz Hugh knight and James Strangeways the younger to William bishop of Salisbury, William earl of Suffolk, Thomas Bekyngton, John Carpenter, Henry Sever clerks and John Hampton esquire. Recognisance for 2,000 marks to be levied etc. in Yorkshire. Condition that they shall pay the said bishop and the others 500 L. at Easter next and 500 L. at Michaelmas following, or within a month after those feasts. (note: Cancelled upon the acknowledgement of John Carpenter, in the name of the said bishop and the others.) Thomas Bekynton was bishop of Bath and Wells, Lord Privy Seal and secretary to king Henry Vl. Henry Sever was the first provost to Eton (king Henrys pet project), Chancellor of Oxford University, Chaplain and almoner to king Henry Vl. Richard earl of Salisbury was Richard Neville the Kingmaker who eventually dethroned Henry Vl and placed a House of York substitute on the throne. James Strangeways was another early Yorkist who became high sherriff of Yorkshire in 1446. The passage as a whole shows early enemies of the crown having to pay debts they somehow incurred, to a group of supporters of the crown that the king owed money to. In other words John Carpenter and friends lend to the crown and are promised repayment with the money owed to the crown, and in this case probably extorted from those you do not like. 2,000 marks was a huge sum. (Bruce E. Carpenter)
By the 1400s in England all references in legal documents to foreign born, or foreign connected, Carpenters have magically disappeared. Did the Charpenters go home? Highly unlikely. They became English. Their descendants fill the pages of history with land disputes and the like, as did their foreign ancestors, excepting they were now in the time of Henry Vl, Carpenters and citizens. It is uncanny. There is literally not a Charpenter left in England by 1400. A remarkable transformation had taken place, an ethnic transformation, and a remarkable transfer of wealth. Where were the vast wealth and assets of Edward Charpenter in the 1400s? One needn t look any further than Carpenter the Town Clerk, or Carpenter the Bishop of Worcester. The usual version of history will fill your eyes with their charitable efforts and good works, while conveniently ignoring their lawsuits and landgrabbing. Oh, you might say, the ancient Carpenters couldnt be businessmen, or involved in real-estate! They must be descendants of some knight somewhere, however hideous he might really be, or perhaps real blue-collar carpenters with nails, or better yet pegs, in hand. Let us review the real historical record. In the Calendar of Close Rolls for 1427, a January 12th court case lists a group of London individuals with John Carpenter As having claim to the manor of Pembrokes and the issues thereof taken, and of the manor of Bruses, both located in Middlesex. In 1428, May 1st, John Carpenter clerk and another group, quitclaim extensive church property in Hertfordshire. The implication here is they sold the lands, which were very extensive. John had good business partners, a Sir John Newenden chaplain, being mentioned. The following I want to quote completely. Some of the names are amusing. For January 28, 1434. John Whitwell chaplain and John Tasburgh citizen and stokfisshmonger of London to John Poutrell, Henry Barton citizen and wolman and John Carpenter common clerk of London, their heirs and assigns. Charter and warranty of all lands, rents and services etc. in the towns and parishes of St. Stephen near Seynt Albons Watforde, Rykmersworth, Oxeye Richard, Oxeye Wilronde or elsewhere in Hertfordshire and Harwe co. Middlesex. Date June 12 Henry Vl Sincerely, Bruce E. Carpenter
