> Dear Bruce & John There are a lot of intelligent people in the Carpenter surname system who really enjoy the controversy amid knights versus wine and woolen merchants. Why not just present your case as is and let us decide. It seeems to me that Bruce you are a very inconsiderate Professor and John you are craxy for aguing with him. We all enjoy the pro vs con without the reference to personal feelings. Bruce it will not be stuck in stone if John produces a Cd as this will be argued for years. As in the movies. Charlotte, most of us are just like you and in the year I've been on the list I have made two good connections that I couldn't have found any other way for a family that left very few tracks. So, hang in there, it could happen. I'm looking for any info about Samuel Carpenter who married Jean Hundley in Amelia County, VA in 1795, was in Nottoway County in 1810, and married Nancy Stone in Mecklenburg County in 1815. He died between 1816 and 1818 in Mecklenburg County. Any little tidbit of information or speculation would help. Carpenter Memorial (p. 63) says Timothy Carpenter (#94, of Samuel 27, of John 17) "was b. about 1700." And nothing more of him. Another source (which I can't cite at the moment) says this Timothy owned land at Goshen NY (but doesn't say whether he lived there, although all his brothers did). Does anyone here know anything further about this Timothy? Robin

Dear all, After the learning stopped on the interchanges of Bruce and John, I lost total interest in the content. But as a long time Internet user, (Since 1989 with Sun Microsystems). I offer the following observations and suggestions: 1) Take the exchanges off line, stop using rootsweb alias posting unless we all can learn something about genealogy (rather than human behavior) and the kibbitzing by the rest of us should die down. 2) Bruce, just produce your own CD. Then we can choose which version we want our descendants to have as a record, maybe both. To follow up on Donna's comment, John R. and John L. provided the data and immeasurable assistance in connecting my blocked 2nd great grandfather John (nmi) Carpenter to Nicholas9, John8, Nicholas7, Thomas6, Oliver5, Abiah4, William3,2,1 from Amos B's Carpenter Memorial version of our Carpenter English heritage. I had been searching for this link for 15 years. I am enternally grateful to them for their interest in my line. I think John R's persistance and interest in our individual lines is far more useful than me knowing if I am or am not a de Melun. Thanks John R.! Although John's project in producing a CD with speculative information may fail the tests of rigorous research fundamentals, I think his consistent work with compiling our information is a benefit to the Carpenter genealogy and we should be able to choose or not choose to have this information in our own records. No, the next issue doesn't continue. I don't think most of them had continuing stories. When I first joined the list and email traffic was slow, I retyped some of the stories that were in the Journal ffor all to read. Too bad I didn't have a scanner at the time. I'd love to get ahold of some of the issues I don't have. I did receive the first issue ( Vol.1, No. 1) from Anne Carpenter of Redford, Mich. Carolyn

All this latest "checkbook " nonsense Bruce has started about the 2000 CD project.... Bruce neglects or overlooks what has been posted regarding this. He is still name calling and denigrating and skewing what has been posted. That is what I am tired of... Bruce needs to quit. Dear Bruce, At the end of this message is the "Dear Researcher" type of letter I have sent out for years (with small variations). "If I may have your CARPENTER FAMILY data, I will send you what I have (using GEDCOM) on my main CARPENTER data file in exchange." This general statement has been in all my "Dear Researcher" letters. As all who have sent me Carpenter data knows, I will share what I have. The Carpenter CD Project is not ever going to make money, it is a hobby and for the benefit of Carpenter Researchers. Even though you have never sent your Carpenter line, you have helped others with bits and pieces of research data. That is why I have sent you the data you have asked for over the last few years. It is unfortunate that your bias does not allow you to see the good intent and the usefulness in the Carpenter CD Project. By compiling this data collection, I am helping other researchers now. I do dozens of lookups each week. And I hope to help more in the future. I wish you the best of luck on your own work. Sincerely, John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA USA Bruce E. For more than twenty years, I have worked on my own line and related CARPENTER lines. I have built a good size computer data base on the early CARPENTER Family in France, England and in America. This main data base has over 48,000 CARPENTER & related names with over 17,000 families. I also have about 67 other CARPENTER related data files. As you probably know most CARPENTERS can trace their lineage into England. But how many know that the research has taken that CARPENTER line into France to a gentleman called "William 'the carpenter' De Melun" who was a knight who had fought at Antioch in Syria during the First Crusade in 1098 AD? Many CARPENTER researchers have focused on their pacticular line, where as I am gathering the roots and descendants of the CARPENTER FAMILY. I have included corrections to their works and new data as I get them. I plan to produce a computer CD about the end of the year 2000 AD with the results of my gathering and compiling of records. My data has the major and minor CARPENTER branches in and from England dating from the grandfather of William 'the carpenter' De Melun about 920 AD. It includes source and other interesting notes. AND I NEED YOUR HELP! If I may have your CARPENTER FAMILY data, I will send you what I have (using GEDCOM) on my main CARPENTER data file in exchange. GEDCOM or Genealogical Data Communications is a standard way to transport computer data from one computer program to another. If you do not have your data on computer, let me know and we will work something out. I look forward to hearing from you. Please pass my name around to any other interested researcher on CARPENTERS. I will answer all inquiries. John R. Carpenter 5850 Yorkshire Ave. La Mesa, CA 91942-2821 U.S.A. (619) 466-5735 Voice (619) 466-591O Fax E-Mail: jrcrin001@home.com
Dear Lucy, The data on that web page has the incorrect ancestry. They have the old data line before wills were found correcting that line. Below is the correct ancestry. The James Carpenter they had is still in the lineage, but a different place. By comparing the dates and ancestry - you can see the Jeans/Johns that were being discussed were ... 1) John b. abt 1303/05 - the son of Maurice & father of Richard who married Christina. 2) Jean the father of Maurice born about 1250 AD whose title was Lord of Daniel et Avesnes les Aubert, Du Nord, France. A few days ago I decided to take a visit to the web site for Carpenter Technology, which is a specialty steel producer in Reading PA. Turns out it was founded by James Henry Carpenter in the late 1800s. Aside from a handsome photo of old JHC, there's no further info given on who he was. Anybody here know James Henry Carpenter? Robin
