I know physical characteristics get quite diluted through the generations, but it's still interetesting to make these light hearted comparisons! Wouldn't it be great to see a painting of an early Carpenter and see some of the same things! :) Speaking of - does anyone know if any early portraits of Carpenters exist? Especially those descending from Wm. of Rehoboth? Thanks, Mary :) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com

    1. International Money Orders
    2. John Carpenter
    3. Recently I was asked about International Money Orders. Good News and Bad News ... The Bad ... Ruesch International which used to charge $3.00 per IMO now charges $15.00 per IMO. The reason for the increase is to discourage individuals from using them. Their phone number is 800-696-7990. The Good ... International Currency Exchange charges $5.00 per IMO. Their phone number is 888-278-6628. They use a similar system to Ruesch, in which you tell them what you want to send (In American dollars or Pound Sterling or Francs, et cetera) and they will give you the exchange rate and final cost. After they receive your check, they mail you your International Money Order made out to whomever you want it made out to. I hope this helps ... John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA USA

    2. John Carpenter
    3. Dear Robin, Carpenter Technology has its main phone number at (610) 208-2000. They have some 3,000 people working there and they have an extensive library on technology. The library also holds company history records. They have a web page at: http://www.cartech.com/ Information contact is listed as: webmastr@cartech.com I am curious also! Let me know if you find out anything! John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA Below is an overview of the company BUILDING ON THE PAST The company was founded on June 7, 1889, as the Carpenter Steel Company in Reading, Pa. James H. Carpenter, a construction engineer whose interest in steel production led him to the study of metallurgy, wanted to test the commercial value of improvements he conceived for the manufacture of steel. He and a small group of investors leased the old Philadelphia and Reading rail mill in Reading and, 11 weeks later, began melting the company’s first order for 3,000 tons of tool steel. One of his patented inventions an air-hardening steel was also used for knives, drills, and projectiles capable of piercing the armor on warships. In fact, Carpenter’s projectiles proved to be a decisive factor in the Spanish-American War, and established the company as a steel pioneer in both the United States and Europe. A Company Set Apart Over the next seven decades, the company found its niche in the area of specialty metals, and by the early 1980s was turning out more than 400 specialty grades of stainless, tool and alloy steels. As the Eighties arrived, so did changes in the U.S. economy. A severe recession lingered for years, and the U.S. steel industry was especially slow to rebound, due in part to increasing competition from foreign imports. Many steel companies faced financial losses for much of that decade. Some closed their doors, sold or downsized their steel operations and/or diversified into other areas. Carpenter, however, remained profitable and kept its sights on the future. The company remained committed then to an 8-year, $400 million capital expansion program. It also set new long-term goals, acquiring companies that were extensions of its core business - specialty metals - and selling those that no longer fit the company’s goals. Carpenter also upgraded its product mix, increasing sales to such high-end markets as the aerospace and chemical industries. By the early Nineties, the company was well positioned to take advantage of a revitalized economy in a global marketplace. As the global marketplace grew, so did competition. Customers demanded not only more sophisticated alloys and higher quality levels, but wanted them in record time. To meet these demands, Carpenter adopted a Continuous Improvement philosophy to improve processes and services; continued to modernize its manufacturing and plant operations; built facilities to house new operations; and acquired new companies that allowed the company to grow faster than a U.S. steel company would otherwise. 1. Carpenter Memorial
    2. Am fairly new to Carpenter research. Posted a query earlier and Terry and others gave me some info, but still need some documentation. Keep seeing ref. to the Carpenter Memorial. Does it include Nathan and Nelly Carpenter of Civil War Era in Carroll Co MISP and John Carpenter of DeSoto County, MISP who was killed in Civil WAr. Have Jim W. Carpenter who married Cassana Crow in 1878 and was in Tate County MISP in 1880 and they are in 1920 Titus County Tx census. Two people thought he belonged to Nathan and Nelly, but he is not on any census with them. He is connected to their son William Green, but he married Cassie's sister Mary Elizabeth so not necessarily with him because he was brother. Am interested in John Crow who died in DeSoto county and had children J.B., William Travis, and J.W. This is interesting due to the fact that a JB of the correct age is in Titus County Texas along with JW and Green. Jerry gave me the William Travis as all I had was W.T. Finally found Jim W and Cassie Crow in Titus County, Tx census in 1820 living with son Walter. Jim says both his parents born in MISP. That does not help as neither of the two possible fathers was born in MISP. Cannot find them in 1900 or 1910 Titus County census (census was in terrible condition, but soundex got most of the names), so am going to try to get Soundex for 1900 and 1910 Tate and Carroll county MISP> Hav been connected to a new relative nearby and hope to get his info soon. Any help appreciated!! Have a bunch of Carpenter pictures I would like to identify.
