Hi everyone! This is a little long. First: I went back to the NM Special Collections library today that holds our Albuq. Gene. collection. I check on the Nicholas Carpenter who I thought I was helping someone last night but it turned out to be David son of Nathaniel C. Carpenter in Winnebago Co. ILL. This in in the book "The Pioneers of Winnebago and Boone Counties Ill who came before 1841" by Katherin E. Rowland, CG Gateway Press, Balt. 1990. It gives the birth of David, b. 9 May 1807 in Adams, Mass and died on 5 Mar 1897 in Rockton, ILL. He married 7 Mar. 1836 in Saratoga NY Julia M. Pettibone, b. 15 July 1814 in Stockholm, NY. daug. of Luman Pettibone and Almira Rudd. Julia died 28 Jan 1901 and both are buried in the Rockton Cemetery. It goes on and give the children: Luman N., Philip P., Anna Phildelia Lippett, an adopted daug. And birth dates. Also gives brother George Carpenter son of Nat. C. b. 11 Apr 1804 d. 28 Dec 1872 m. Phebe Crandall b. 1805 in Rensselear Co NY. d. 1906 at age 100. Both are buried at Rockton. George came with his father and other brothers and sisters in 1836. His children are: Francis, David Hudson, Martha Ann. The author quotes the Carpenter Memorial on Page 571 which gives George as # 3334 of Nathaniel #1554 0f Nat. # 607 of Ephraim #175 of Ephraim #42 of William # 18 of William #16 George's kids b. dates are in the Memorial but you can write me for those and for David's kids. Gives all of Nat's kids and his father's as well, all sited from the Memorial. Second: I also found a Carpenter book in the library done by a Miss Annie I. Carpenter called "Carpenters and Allied Families" printed by the American Historical Society, Inc. NY 1936. She used Daniel's and Amos Carpenter's books so it still has the Abiah and Abigail as twins which I am going to correct to baptismal dates. The last generation in the book is of Col. Cephas Warner Carpenter, son of Ira and Ester Ann (Luce) Carpenter. There is a beautiful portrait of Ira in the book and may be one of Cephas (not sure). Cephas was born in Moretown, VT 2 Aug 1832 and died in Deadwood, SD 10 Aug 1902. His children are: Annie Isabelle b. 13 Sept 1860 in St. Paul, Minn. Matthew Blanchard b. 10 Oct 1869 in St. Paul, Minn. He married Mabel Duss. He died 29 April 1928 in St. Paul. This is found on Page 32-33 of the above book. I hope this helps someone. Maybe George in MINN? Linda in Albuq. Searching for: Acton, Bailey, Bartle, Carpenter, Hannah, Hertzog, Hillary, Holland, Mackay, Matheson, Page, Reynolds, Ridenour/Reitenaurer, Shadwick, Stoner, Wollet.

Take good care of yourselves Tony and Gill. ******************************************** WILLIAM5 CARPENTER (WILLIAM "THE CARPENTER" DE4 MELUN, URSION I DE3, HERVE DE2, JOSSELIN I DE1) was born in of Melun, Seine-et-Marne, Ile De France, France, and died in Ypres, West Vlaanderen, Flanders, France. Children of WILLIAM CARPENTER are: i. WILLIAM6 CARPENTER, b. Abt. 1090, of Melun, Seine-et-Marne, Ile De France, France; d. Abt. 1162, near, Coventry, Warwickshire, England. ii. GODWIN CARPENTER, b. Abt. 1100, of Melun, Seine-et-Marne, Ile De France, France. Godwin was christened in Suffolk, East Anglia. The first mention of Godwin in Suffolk is a record dated 1121 and also in 1114, this later date is believed to be in his own hand. It has been put forward by others that he may have been nominated, or promised, the Earldom of Suffolk. But Hugh Bigod was Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1140, and the first Earl of Suffolk was created about 1340, so there seems to be no foundation for this theory. The country was in an unstable situation at this time, King William II had died in 1100 in a hunting accident in the New Forest. Henry I had seized the treasury at Winchester the next day and later was crowned King in Westminster Abbey. Henry I (b. 1068), known as Beauclerc or the Scholar, was the youngest Son of William the Conqueror. He was a Skilled administrator and a believer in legal reform Although he had many mistresses and numerous illegitimate children, he kept on good terms with his wife Matilda, a daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland, throughout the eighteen years of their marriage. Well educated and calm, he could be cruel and ruthless, but the reforms he sought to introduce to England were diluted by an ongoing conflict with his brother. In 1101 Duke Robert of Normandy landed at Portsmouth claiming the Crown, after negotiation at Alton he agreed to give up his claim to the English throne for a pension of £2000 a year. Not a bad pension in those days, in fact one could safely say that it was a fortune. At the battle of Tinchebria: in 1106, Henry I captured his brother Robert and gained Normandy. He then sent Robert to Cardiff Castle as a prisoner, where he stayed for the rest of his life - no brotherly love there. Robert was doomed to spend the last twenty eight years of his life in prison. Henry I gave orders for the tomb of Edward the Confessor to be opened, some years after his death, the body showed no signs of decay. Abbot Crispin was in serious trouble with Bishop Grundulf of Rochester for trying to pull tufts of hair from the dead King's Edwards white beard to sell as relics. Relics, or souvenirs, were of great value then, as today, when you consider that a dress belonging to Marilyn Munroe was sold in 1999 year for £800.000, what comparable price could have been asked for a tuft of a King's Beard?. Henry I has an important place in English history. In 1110 the Pipe Rolls, official accounts and records of sheriffs and other officials, were introduced, these continued until 1834. In 1123 St Bartholomew's Hospital was founded in London. The only legitimate son of Henry I, William, was drowned in 1120 when the White Ship, the vessel on which he was travelling to England from Normandy was wrecked, the crew were allegedly drunk on wine he had supplied to them. Without a legitimate male heir to the throne, Henry persuaded the barons to accept his daughter Matilda as heir to the throne. Before Henry died of food poisoning near Rouen in France in 1135, Matilda (the widow of emperor Henry V) had married Geoffrey, count of Anjou. (1113-5 1). We know that William the Carpenter was supporting the King at this Period. Three of his sons had been given lands in three different counties in England, as previously mentioned. Was this a deliberate move on William's part in order to protect his family? I believe it was his form of protectionism, as all his sons survived. We note that Godwin was christened in Norfolk, had he been put into the care of Roger Bigod or Richard of Clare, two of the Norman Knights that William had fought beside, both had lands in Norfolk, which would indicate that this was the case. GODWIN6 CARPENTER (WILLIAM5, WILLIAM THE4, URSION I3 DE MELUN, HERVE2 MELUN, JOSSELINI1 DE MELUN) was born Abt. 1100 in Melun Seine-et-Marne France. Child of GODWIN CARPENTER is: 7. i. RALPH7 CARPENTER, b. Abt. 1135, Yorkshire England. We can see that Ralph was born in Yorkshire, references to him are found in the Pipe Rolls of 1175. His cousin Robert Carpenter, Bishop of Hereford was consecrated on December 22 1163. d. 27 February 1167. this is the first recorded member of the family who entered the church. Godwin had lost his lands to Henry II because of his support of King Stephen. Later when he had proved his loyalty to the King, Godwin regained lands in Norfolk. to be continued 7. RALPH7 CARPENTER (GODWIN6, WILLIAM5, WILLIAM THE4, URSION I3 DE MELUN, HERVE2 MELUN, JOSSELINI1 DE MELUN) was born Abt. 1135 in Yorkshire England. Child of RALPH CARPENTER is: 8. i. AILRIC8 CARPENTER, b. Abt. 1166, Norfolk England. --------------B990D59E1DB556BB9B92FDBA--

In Carpenter Memorial at page 82, in the listing for Nehemiah #293, is a reference "...if Thompson is correct that it is this Nehemiah...." Does anyone know who this Thompson is? He's obviously a genealogist; but what did he author? Is he reliable? What's his focus/specialty? (I have a sense of deja vu--have I asked this some time ago? If so, please forgive...and have pity to answer again.) Robin C.
Well, Phoebe, here's two tidbits that may help. I find in Early Records of FPC at Goshen (Coleman) pp. 10 & 17: (1) Ephriam Marston married Ruth Carpenter on 3/28/1779, and (2) Peter Stagg married Ruth Marston on April 29 1788. How ABC knows (a) these two Ruths are the same person, or (b) that they (or either one) was a daughter of John #74, I do not know. All else aside, it seems remarkable for Ruth to have had her first marriage at age 59 (or 61, as ABC has it). Perhaps ABC has Ruth's birth year wrong; perhaps it's a different Ruth Carpenter; perhaps she's a late bloomer. Robin
Dear Patty, I can't give you any clear answer, but my direction would be to look at the descendants of Nicholas 708 from A.B. Carpenter's Memorial book. I cannot find any reference to Susan in the Carpenter Memorial, but the parents of Matthew Hale Carpenter were Ira Carpenter and Esther Ann Luce Carpenter. She died at age 33 in 1835 and was the daughter of a minister "of some repute". There is no mention of a Susan in the Memorial who fits the time frame and conditions of your query. They were listed in the Memorial with Cephas, Anne, and Esther in addition to MHC Since the Carpenter line of Nicholas is populated all over the territory from Newfield to Saco and particularly North Waterboro, If you want to connect Susan, I would pursue her as a member of that line. Although I was just there for several weeks, I didn't see any Susan in the records, but I didn't go to York County records or pursue births in Saco. The Carpenter who went from Waterboro to Saco, was Benjamin #1767 and since he had several sons whose families were not recorded in the Carpenter Memorial, I would look to the birth records of Saco for Susan as a daughter of one of these sons. I assume though from your e-mail that Susan's line is not interesting for you if it is not related to the Ira Carpenter-Esther Ann Luce of Moretown,VT. HTH! I finally received from the NYS Archives a photocopy of John Carpenter's 1732 will (Jamaica LI NY). [This is John #24 in Carpenter Memorial, 1658-1732.] The copy quality of the will is very bad--so bad that the state declined to cash my check--and a number of words are undecipherable. This will was abstracted in the NY Gen & Biog Record, Vol 65 p.38, transcript of which abstract I have from "The Ancestry & Descendant of Col. Solomon Carpenter of Goshen NY" of 1974. I'm sure the abstract has appeared elsewhere as well. Overall, the abstract is a pretty good representation of the will (although it omits all the introductory pieties). My interest in seeing the actual will was to clarify a confusion over the number and sequence of John's sons. The abstract refers to sons Nehemiah, John of Goshen, Solomon of Goshen, Joseph, Increase, Nehemiah (again). The abstract THEN paraphrases the will's reference to "my three sons." HUH? Is it three sons (reference), five (name count), or conceiveably six (if there were two Nehemiahs)? The will makes it all pretty clear. One item bequeaths to wife (Mary) and son Nehemiah. Another item bequeaths to son "John Carpenter belonging to Goshen." Another item bequeaths to "Solomon Carpenter belonging to Goshen." Then an item bequeaths "...unto three sons Joseph Increase & Nehemiah Carpenter after the end of my Wifes Widdowhood all my meadow lying on Nether East Neck and my lot of land lying down(?) the Neck joining to the land of Jeremiah Denton to be equally divided between them to them and their heirs and assigns forever." (The will literally says "Item" initiating each bequeathal statement separately.) Later reference is made to "...equal charge with my three sons Joseph Increase & Nehemiah in sharing(?) my building as long as my Wife & I shall live." Finally, after the homestead is (later) to be sold, there is reference to "...my three sons and four daughters Joseph Increase & Nehemiah & Mary Hannah Susanna & Phebe..." to split the proceeds equally. Very clearly there are five sons. Almost as clearly, John and Solomon are eldest and gone off on their own. Finally, the sequence of the three youngest sons is pretty surely Joseph-Increase-Nehemiah. (The sequence in ABC's Carpenter Memorial has Nehemiah first--which I would guess is because he is named first in John's Item #1, as described above, but which sequence I conclude is plainly wrong.) Genealogist Raymond George Carpenter says that John #24 was married twice, 1st to Abigail Rhodes and 2nd to Mary who is named in the will. John is 74 yrs old at his death, with one daughter (Hannah) who is unmarried although there are two younger sisters, and with three sons living at home. Presumably they are all young adults. It adds up, in my view, to wife Mary likely being the mother of these offspring, and Abigail Rhodes the mother of John & Solomon of Goshen. Does anyone wish to concur with me in this? Robin C.

I made a fantastic Carpenter history discovery, a result of my lack of skill in reading the Curia Regis Rolls. Only twenty-five percent of the entry items use the patronym Carpenter, while the other seventy-five percent use only first names. Why was I so dumb? The seventy-five percent I had overlooked are full of precise detail. Geoffrey Carpenter is clearly the first Carpenter(of importance) in England. Adam was his son. Geoffery's son John was justiciary of Ireland. This can explain the later Carpenters in Ireland like Alexander.Ralph and Roger were Geoffery's sons. Son John had property in London. The Alexander, Hugh, John and Walter that were seen in Middlesex are directly of this group. BC
The oldest reference to anyone using Carpenter as a surname is the following Calendar of Documents Preserved in France, Vol I, 1189-1199. I make this assumption because it would seem odd for a trade carpenter to become a member of a religious house. Bayeux is in Normandy. Was there a Carpenter family group in Normandy? Later when I introduce Elias Carpenter from Bordeaux in 1250, we will see that he was born there, indicating other Carpenters from the earlier 1200s in Gascony. "Charter of Jordan de Champern confirming to the cannons regular.......Gaufrido Carpentari. Priory of St. Stephen.Plessis-Grimould in the Diocese of Bayeux." Bruce Carpenter

Dear Carpenters, After a year of searching, I have found the name of my greatgrandfather. Not as exciting as research back into the 1200's but quite a breakthrough for me. Does anyone have information on J.C. Carpenter (married to Anna E. Watkins) circa 1850 living in Tioga Center, New York. He was a farmer. That's all the information I have so far. Thanks, Margery Carpenter Ranch mranch@earthlink.net
I recently rec'd some kind help for the Sturgis Library in St. Joseph county Michigan; copy of a 1982 obituary of JOSEPH D. CARPENTER of Centreville MI. It turns out this Joseph is not the one I expected (and hoped), but perhaps the info may prove useful to someone else here on the list. JDC died August 23, 1982 at the age of 82. He was born in Seymour, Indiana Sept 20, 1899, according to the obit. (Soc Sec Death Index had him born 1894, perhaps in a confusion with the Joseph Carpenter I sought...whom I know was born in that prior year.) He married Fannie Eicher Aug 28, 1919 in Berne IN. They had 5 daughters (Mary, Bertha, Esther, Ann, Edna) and 3 sons (Joseph Jr, Marcus J, James J.). JDC had 2 brothers, six sisters, four foster sisters, 3 foster brothers (Amstutz). funeral services were at the Locust Grove Mennonite Chruch in Findley. If this info connects with anyone, I'll be happy to sent the actual obituary. Robin C.
