    3. Hello Carpenters, I have made some great finds re my gggg grandfather, Thomas Carpenter. He is probably the son of John and Sarah ; was baptised in Cranley (Cranleigh) on 26 December 1779 as my records show him to be born c1778 Surrey England from subtracting his current age on convict records. 8 Aug 1807 Trial at Bridgewater Quarter sessions (Somerset ??) for larceny of a house. 1. Carpenter/Zimmerman DNA Testing
    2. Bob & Judy Carpenter
    3. Hello to the List again In my haste to send out my last I incorrectly made an error in the e-mail address for my friend Robert C. Carpenter, it should have read [email protected] , sorry for the mistake Robert. There were two replies with questions on "What do you do if you're female????" and "Why is it that the DNA test only works on males and not females?" Y-Chromosomes are passed from father to son only and not to daughters. However, that is for the Y-DNA test. Females may take the mtDNA test to "trace female lineages of both males and females." Females can use the Y-DNA results also through a brother, your father or possibly your uncle. If you do this it will document your paternal genetic ancestral line. Go to http://www.ftdna.com to read more about mtDNA. I would suggest that all females wanting more information about DNA log onto http://www.ftdna.com , the initial web page with their outline of topics, can answer most questions for males and females. For example, One item highlighted in blue reads: DETERMINE relatives through two of your eight great-grandparents using Y or mtDNA testing. Don't forget also that three sisters and one brother of the same father, or any combination of siblings of the same father can submit a DNA sample from one of the males (each pitches in to share the costs) the resulting Paternal DNA test results would be genetically correct for each sibling, again providing that they share the same father. There is a DNA Forum for questions and answers at http://www.ftdna.com . You must also remember that DNA testing is a relatively new genealogical tool and does not replace the conventional methodologies of acquiring your family history. DNA can confirm, prove or disprove a theory or some type of circumstantial evidence when nothing else seems to help. Thanks Bob Carpenter

    3. My 4 x gt. grandfather William CARPENTER bc1763 I believe in Roehampton, Surrey, at least his gravestone (d1833) says of Roehampton, as he was living in Hastings, Sussex for most of his life. I have found on the IGI, an extracted baptism for a William 29 May 1763 at Putney, which adjoins Roehampton. Parents Joseph CARPENTER and Mary. William married Caroline GURR in Hastings in 1786 and it would appear that his only son William b1799 moved to be near Roehampton, as the headstone states he died in London 13 July 1832. I descend through his daughter Sarah b1790 who married Mark WHITE in Hastings. Is there anyone who has this William on their tree? Regards to all, Frances

    2. Hi Robin, Thank you for your posting. I found my gggrandfather Levi V. Carpenter in the information that you shared. " p.191 Carpenter, Levi V., 32, mx1, wf Mary J 32, mx1 6 ch. Malissa 12 Benj D. 10, Chas P. 8, John H. 6, Moses 11/12. [Levi is ABC #2154...some children diff from other reports]" I am curious as to what the reference to ABC #2154 means. I know that according to Levi's Civil War File, his parents were Benjamin D. and Elizabeth Canfield Carpenter. I am hoping the ABC #2154 reference will help me to identify further back on the family line. Thanks again, Jim in Ohio

    1. DNA Testing
    2. Bob & Judy Carpenter
    3. Hello to the Carpenter and Zimmerman lists. ?Are you descended from the Zimmerman/Carpenters from Steffisburg, Berne, Switzerland, and Lancaster Co., PA? Do you feel much like a brick mason, just working away at that big brick wall and never seeming to get anywhere? If you answered yes to either, you need to stop procrastinating and log onto ftdna.com. When you have their web page, select Surname Projects, then select C77 or the latest CNo., and then select CARPENTER. Now select members.cox.net...... and scroll down to the chart. You are now looking at the DNA results from 9 different groups of Carpenters. Look at Group 5. Notice the minute differences in the 25 marker Y-Chromosome DNA test results among these three people. 6060 is a descendant of Christian “CZ” Zimmerman, son of Hans Zimmerman. (paper trail suggests a connection, DNA proves the connection or common ancestor) 14756 is a descendant of Peter Zimmerman, son of Hans Zimmerman. (paper trail proves the connection and DNA also proves the connection or common ancestor) 17011 is a descendant of Unknown Zimmerman. (There is no paper trail to prove or suggest a connection. However, DNA proves that there is a connection or common ancestor) DNA test results show that there is a 99.9 percent likelihood that each of the above descend from a common ancestor. Based upon what we know, each could descend from: 1) Hans Zimmerman; 2) his brother Peter; 3) brother or father of Hans and Peter. Remember, DNA is passed from father to son. Scientists say that our male Y-Chromosomes are passed from father to son with little or no changes for up to 500 generations. That easily computes to 1500 years if you allow 30 years per generation as the rule of thumb. FTDNA through the Carpenter Cousins group charges $171 for your 25-Marker Y-Chromosome DNA test results that you can access from the about FTDNA site. From the time you initiate the request it will take about six weeks to receive your results. Granted, $171 seems like a fairly large amount, but if you are like me, you have spent that much for two nights and meals at a motel or hotel while looking through microfilm or large dusty books and not finding much of any thing. Lets say that you did find a birth record from a Bible which was dated 1834, and it included marriage records and death records for your ancestor. What would be the absolute accuracy of that information? Granted, we would like to think we could trust our ancestors. But, do we know for sure that our ancestors wrote the information as it happened, or years later? I believe that you would agree that it is not nearly 99.9 percent accurate. FTDNA uses the University of Arizona to test their DNA samples and your name is never known to them. Their results are scientific and based upon four Nucleotide Bases: Guanina (G), Adenine (A), Thymidine (T), and Cystosine (C), it is the interrelationship of these four Bases that form our specific Y- Chromosome DNA results. If you want family history results that are accurate and will stand the test of time, then it is time for you to have your DNA tested by FTDNA. A couple of year ago the standard was 12- Markers, then 25-Markers. Now it appears that 37-Markers will become the standard in years to come. As males we have 46-Markers or Y-Chromosomes, including two that determine each person’s sex. If these are X and X, the person is a female; if X and Y, male. The DNA test simply measures the lengths of certain specific sequences on the Y-Chromosome. These sequences are smaller than genes and don’t have any genetic function, so the test will not reveal any physical characteristics or innate tendencies. These particular sequences have been chosen because they tend to mutate very rapidly (compared to most DNA). The current understanding is that each locus can be expected to mutate (typically getting longer or shorter by one unit) about once in 500 generations on average. Look again at the results for 6060 and 14756. The DYS Locus ID for 439 shows a value of 11 for 6060 and 12 for 14756. Getting results back like this is almost heart stopping. It doesn’t suggest a connection. These DNA results provide a 99.9% likelihood that the two people involved share a common ancestor. Only a mother giving birth to twins has that kind of proof and accuracy. For 6060 and 14756 that common ancestor is Hans Zimmerman. Questions regarding our Hans Zimmerman? You can e-mail Robert C. Carpenter at [email protected] or Bob Carpenter at [email protected] We will look for your name to be added to the FTDNA list of satisfied customers in the near future. Bob Carpenter

    1. Carpenter Memorial -- Book
    2. The full and complete title of the book referred to as the "Carpenter Memorial" is: A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America brought down from their English ancestor John Carpenter, 1303, with many biographical notes of descendants and allied families. It was written by Amos B[ugbee] Carpenter and published at Amherst, Massachusetts by the Press of Carpenter and Morehouse in 1898. Most citations stop at the end of the first line (with the word "America"). I obtained my copy from a company called Higginson Books in Salem, Massachusetts, several years back. This publishing house specializes in top quality reprints of old books such as the Carpenter Memorial. They have a very fine catalog, but they are not cheap. However, if you are interested, their website is: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/ Hope this information helps. Coralie J. Allen ggggg granddaughter of Isaiah Carpenter of Shaftsbury, VT (#1640).

    3. How about my question about the three John Carpenters in Orange County, NY? Does anyone have a clue as to the identity of these? How do I tell one from the other? There are three John Carpenters on the 1775 Tax Assessment List of Goshen, Orange County: 1. John Carpenter (blacksmith) District 10 2. John Carpenter (saddler) District 1 3. John Carpenter (stiller) District 7 Also on the list are Moses Carpenter, Ruth Carpenter, Increase Carpenter, and Moses Coe. Can the three Johns be identified as to spouse, etc? Was Ruth Carpenter the mother of any of them? 3. This Joseph Carpenter is my 2nd great granduncle, I can *almost* swear. His wife may have been Olive Taylor. His father, Jesse Carpenter ca 1740-1815 was married to Sarah Seely/Seeley, 1762-1827, in 1782. Joseph has 2 sisters: Clarissa who married David Roe. Hannah who married George Cunningham Edwards. Some works have her married to David Roe, but that isn't true. I have George Edwards' will. These are my great great grandparents. He also has one brother, Jesse, who married Emma Sayre. I have his will and have transcribed it, if anyone wants me to send it to them. Connie > I have a Joseph Carpenter-88893 b. 30 Sep 1783 in Chester, Orange, NY d. 21 > May 1829 in Goshen, Orange, NY. 3. Hello Robin, The John Carpenter appears to be RIN 21082 in the CE CD 2001. He was born 6 Feb 1796 in Minisink, Orange, NY. His son Levi Carpenter-21099 (b. abt 1832) is listed in the 1870 Census for Lumberland, Sullivan, NY. His father is Benjamin Carpenter-12760 and is number 309 in the Carpenter Memorial. Page 84. His family is on page 156 (#134). His grandfather is Col. Solomon Carpenter-4738 who is Number 75 in the Carpenter Memorial on Page 61. The above John Carpenter-21082 had a brother named James b. 6 April 1805 in Minisink. He would have been 11 in 1816. The above John Carpenter-21082 had an Uncle James Carpenter-12759 b. 1752 in Goshen, Orange, NY d. April 1817. (NOTE: This would match with, "James was also assessed in 1814, but not in 1818." James Carpenter-12759 had a son named James Carpenter-21074 b. 1788 in Goshen, Orange, NY but nothing more is known about him. I found only 1 of Col. Solomon Carpenter's descendants named Joesph that even came close to being alive at the right time. This is Joseph S. Carpenter-23416 b. 19 May 1815 in Amity, Orange, NY who was son of Solomon Carpenter-23412 b. 24 March 1768. OTHER POSSIBILES Joseph Carpenters ... I have a Joseph Carpenter-26996 b. abt 1776 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 331 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.No family listed. Probably settled in Palmyra, NY. I have a Joseph Carpenter-27042 b. abt 1765 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 333 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901. 3. Hello, There were at least 3 Carpenter Stations or Forts. 1) One is near present day Hustonville, Lincoln county, KY ... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~carpenter/ 2) ... and another is in VA ... Joseph Carpenter's family built Fort Carpenter near Covington, Augusta county, VA in the 1740s. See: (Mary) Evelyn Harlow Carpenter, "The Carpenters of Fort Carpenter 1746 - 1949" which was privately published at Covington, VA, l949. 3) ... Then ... I also have reference to another Carpenter's Fort that was on Wheeling Island in the Ohio River, near present day Wheeling, Ohio county, WV. Then it was part of Washington County, VA. The current Jefferson county, Ohio borders the Ohio River with Ohio County, WV. Can anyone supply more information on the later two? I appreciate any information. John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA
