I hope maybe you can help me? I don't have any proof, but a suspicion that Lewis Carpenter was a son of Frederick Carpenter, who was born c1787 in VA. Frederick had a son born c1815-1820, and Lewis Carpenter was born c1818. Lewis lived near Frederick in 1850. A will index for Mercer Co. doesn't list Frederick. 1810 Census Mahoning twp, Mercer Co, has a Thomas Carpenter 1820 Census Mahoning twp, Mercer Co. has Thomas and Frederick next door 1830 Census Mahoning twp, Mercer Co. has Sarah and Frederick next door 1840 Census Sandy Creek twp, Mercer Co. only Frederick 1840 Census Cool Spring twp, Mercer Co. has Lewis married 1840 Census Salem twp, Mercer Co has Coulters 1849 Mahoning is now Lawrence Co. Lawrence County history mentions Thomas and lists 1810 churches in Mahoning twp with Carpenters the principal members of Christ church. There is a Carpenter Cemetery in Springfield twp. Mercer Co. but none of the above Carpenters are there. My grandfather talked about his Irish grandmother Mary - he had two but the other one was German. The death certificate of Levi gives his mother as Colter and his father as Carpenter (from a son in law). Same son in law gave information for name of Levi's 2nd wife as Alice Short in one place and Alice Soult in another. I would also appreciate any information on Alice born 9 Jul 1862 in Pennsylvania. All census records show Lewis and his mother were born in Pennsylvania and his father in Virginia. Mary shows her father born in Ireland and her mother born in Pennsylvania. Poor Mary keeps getting older and her husband younger! 1850 census records Sandy Lake twp., Mercer County, Pennsylvania Lewis Carpenter, age 32, farmer wife Mary, age 38 daughter Hannah, age 13 son Robert, age 11 son Levi, age 3, my great grandfather 1860, 1870, 1880 census records Ashland twp., Clarion County, Pennsylvania Lewis, age 45, age 55, age 62 Mary, age 48, age 60, age 70 Hannah has become Cordelia, age 23, not on 1870 or 1880 Robert, age 21. age 29, 1880 living next door with wife Margaret Levi, age 13, 1870 living in Venango County with 1st wife Emma Hennage. Do you recognize any of these names? Any suggestions? Any encouragement? Thanks for reading this far. Betty Stevens in Yale, WA
good luck: one a CD with 3 data bases and the other a book.
OUCH! You are right, I can't believe I did that. Yes Lewis Carpenter's father was born in Virginia. Terry suggested a Frederick that was also in Mercer Co., Pennsylvania Possibilities at this time? So far I have found a Thomas and Frederick (father and son?) in 1820 in Mahoney twp in Mercer Co. Frederick still there in 1830 and a Sarah Carpenter next on the list. 1840 and 1850 Frederick is in Sandy Lake twp and a Louis is in Cool Spring twp 1840 and Lewis in Sandy Creek 1850. Mercer county is a new one for me but I can't find Mahoney twp now, it didn't split anything off until 1850, so maybe they renamed it? Again all suggestions gratefully appreciated. To Robin Carpenter - In a year 2000 "Carpenter Chronicles' is published your transcription of the 1732 will of John Carpenter in which he gives his musket and sword to his son John in Goshen. Do you know which John is that son who received the musket and sword. I am once again in my perpetual puzzlement over the many John Carpenters. I would like to know where the John Carpenter who married Ruth Coe fits in the puzzle. According to Amos in the additions and corrections in his book they were married somewhere in 1735. Is there a will for the John Carpenter who received the musket and sword? Did he have a son John? Help!! Margaret Cass
Dear Melvin, Wisner, and Carpenter folks, I have recently learned that a weakness or predisposition for fever convulsions is a genetic trait. Because a few of my relatives children had convulsions with fevers and our whole family always had concerns re. fevers in children, I had assumed that such reactions were very wide spread and had not considered them to be a "genetic" trait. My recent research has led me to find/believe that, in fact, such a predisposition is inherited. One of my grandchildren has developed recurrent seizures and I am interested to know if any other folks in these families have had such problems. This child's first seizure was associated with a fever, but his recurrent seizures do not seem to be. I would appreciate hearing from any members of either family who many have some information re. seizures in other family members. This actually could be an indicator of a family line, I suspect. Thank you, Phoebe in CA My lines descend from John Melvin of Concord, MA and Johannes Wisner of Orange Co. NY.

I hope that someone on the list may be able to help me with information regarding my Great Grandfather Henry Marshall Carpenter. Henry Marshall Carpenter's death certificate states that he was born Dec. 21, 1869 in Wisconsin. It gives his Father's names as H.B. Carpenter born in New York. How would one go about finding out what the H. and B. stand for? Would a marriage certificate for Henry Marshall Carpenter give the names of his parents? Also, could anyone tell me what year it became mandatory to register a birth, marriage or death in the United States. With thanks Gai
Still searching for any Information on Henry Carpenter, b. ca 1795 in New York. Children: Charlotte; Marion b. ca 1822; Jerome b. 09/16/1824 in NY; Thaddeus b. ca 1829; Wallace Fay b, ca 1832; Henry Jr. b. ca 1835; Byron Fay & Augusta M. b. 09/23/1837 in Illinois. Jerome says he grew up in Syracuse and Salina, New York but moved in 1837 to Illinois with his mother and family. Henry Jr. says the family moved to Ottawa, IL and his father died there very soon afterwards. Roxanna shows up in early Ottawa church records but no mention of Henry. I am descendant from Augusta M.
