Elizabeth Carney married Elihu Crofut SHERWOOD in CT in the late 1830s and moved to Macon GA. Can anyone share more information about her family with me? The Braswells braswellte@iol10.com
Hello all! Advanced apologies if you recieve this more than once...I am posting to multiple lists. I am searching for the aformentioned in Cookeville, Putman Co. and possibly Carthage, Smith Co. Listed below are details of each person. James Henry Carney, my g-grandfather (Son of Matthew?? Carney) It is possible that he left home at a early age possibly before 14. b. June 24, 1885 (Tennessee) d. October 27, 1957 (Nashville, Davidson, Co. Tennessee) m. Earnest Carter (Daughter of Bud "Puddles" Carter and Susan Mary Unknown) b. April 5, 1885 (Tennessee) d. September 24, 1977 (Huntsville, Madison Co. Alabama) I have found Earnest with her parents and four of eight siblings (three of which were living at this time) on the 1900 Jackson Co. TN Census. Through oral histories of living decendants James and Earnest probably married in Carthage, Smith Co. TN before moving to Nashville. They had nine children that survived beyond infancy. Woodford Matthew, Otis Lee, William Lawrence, Willis Gerstle, James Burton, Alfred Farris, Jewel Earnestine, Mary Gladys, and Lee Farris. Emma Carney (daughter of Matthew?? Carney) I have very limited knowledge of Emma. I know that she married a Lemmons and believe that more than likely she was living in Cookville, according to oral history. It is believed that her husband died before 1926. Searching for any information including parents, dates, family, anything! I have additional information if anyone is interested. Kymm

Kymm, I noticed you have a Willis Gerstle Carney listed. Do you know if he was named after someone? The first name Willis is very common in my Carney line. Just wondering if there might be a connection. On Doyle Baker's descendancy chart of the Wimberlys, it looks like that Elizabeth, daughter of Levi Wimberly (#19) was the mother of my William W. Carney (alias William C. Wimberly). This all comes from the bastardy bonds of Bertie Co., NC. Thomas Carney had to post a bond in 1781 for having a child by Elizabeth Wimberly. The security was his brother Absalom Carney. Thomas and Absalom moved to Pitt Co., about 1794. William did not go. William's census records of 1820, 1830 and 1840 of Caldwell Co., KY, all put him as being b. about 1780 or 1781. William C. Wimberly had to post a bond in Oct 1802 for having a child by Jerusha Barns. No security was listed. William W. Carney had to post a bond in Feb 1803 for having a child by Jerusha Barnes. This time Levy Wimberly was his security. In addition, in May 1802 William C. Wimberly posted a bond for a child with Christian Moore and again one of his securities was Levy Wimberly. As William used both names, it helps to identify him. So it appears that his mother's father had to be his security. William W. Carney is in the 1803 tax list of Bertie Co. He then moved to Christian Co. KY, and from then on uses William W. Carney on his will of 1839, probated in 1845. The 1852 death records of Caldwell Co., KY, say that Wiley Carney decd was a son of William W. Carney and Catherine Moore. I know that there were two large Moore families in Bertie. Another child was my 3rd great grandmother Jennett Carney Dunning b. 1802. Can anyone prove that this theory is incorrect?
I had more than one request for this so am posting it to the list. Taken from "History of Middle Tennessee Baptist" by J. H. Grime, published 1902, Baptist and Reflector, Nashville, Tenn. (I have copied this as it was written so any spelling or gramatical errors are direct from the book.) Elder P. W. Carney, Mount Juliet, Wilson County, Tennessee. He is of Scotch-Irish descent. He is low and slender with rather dark complexion. He is the son of Elder F. W. and Annie Lou Ella (Weatherford) Carney. He was born at Hurstburgh, Humphreys County, Tennessee, May 23, 1871. He was reared on a farm. He made profession at Little Cedar Lick Church, Wilson County, Tennessee in 1883 A. D., and the same fall he united with said church and was baptized by Elder J. P. Gilliam. He was ordained December 25, 1892, by Elders W. C. McPherson, A. Sperry, J. P. Gilliam and J. W. Self. He has been pastor of the following churches: Athens, 1893- 94; Baker's Grove, 1893-98; then 1899-1902; Little Cedar Lick, 1893-94, then 1898-1902; Una, 1898-99; Zion, Trousdale County, 1894; Fellowship, 1995-98; Rutland, 1897-98; Gladeville, 1897- 1900; Falling Creek, 1899, to present. He was educated at Leeville and Mt. Juliet high schools. He has constituted one church - Green Hill, September, 1900; also one at Mt. Juliet, December, 1900. He has baptized about 200 persons and married thirty-five couples. He was married to Miss Carrie Sullivan, July 3, 1892, by whom he has one child. ncox01@mail.orion.org
