Hi Lis I too have a CARNEY. Mine was Patrick who was transported from County Cork in 1835. He was 13 years old. There has always been talk that Patrick's brother William followed him out in 1837 aboard the Heber but I have never been able to prove this. On the ships logs, Patricks name was CARNEY. Williams was spelt KEARNEY. I think it depended on who was writing it down. Hi, I have just found my 4xgrgrandfather James Carney b.c.1770 Kilbegnet, Co Galway and have received a story written by a James Carney about Hugh Carney b.1792 Kilbegnet and his crime of insurrection which he was transported for 14 years to the colonies. The person who sent me this story can't remember who she got it off. I was wondering if there are any James Carney's out there that went to Ireland to do some research after 1980. Also I was wondering if any of you listers have a photo of the town of Carney or the sign post with Territory of the Carney's on it just outside of the town. The sign post is written in Gaelic I think. Hoping I can find my elusive author, Sheryl Reardon Toowoomba, Queensland. iroquala@one.net.au
I want to take the time to say a BIG THANK YOU to Wendy who took the time to help me find some information about my family. She took the time and didn't quit the first time. So my hat is off to her for her help. I don't know how to repay her for the help. I am still on Cloud Nine. I also want to thank all the other people who have taken the time to help me with the information they have sent me in my searches over the past year. Thanks, Barb
Husbands Kearney family came from New York to Ohio to Shelby County, Indiana. Name was spelled Carney until they came to Missouri in about 1870. John Valentine Carney was born in 1833, census info says in Ohio, with father born in New York. Carney's married into the Fixx and Van Benthuysen families. We have no information on parents of John Valentine Carney. That is our DEAD END. That's it As I indicated, there's considerable info available on this line, thus there are a number of notes I have on several of these people you might be interested in. For example, here are some (but not all) of the notes I have on William Carney who established the line. Quote The beginning of the Carney line in America for many family members was in 1650 when, on 20 March 1650, “Mr. Anthony Ellyott” received “1150 acs lyeing on the N. W. side of the North Riv. in Mockjack Bay,” for transporting 23 persons to America; amongst whom was one William Carney (Cavaliers and Pioneers, page 208, Nell Marion Nugent). The 1150 acres were in the present County of Mathews (then part of Gloucester County) on the Middle Peninsula approximately 40 miles by land and water from the city of Portsmouth in Tidewater, Virginia. Precisely where William Carney settled at this time is unknown. A William Carney was granted Head Rights on 100 acres of land located on Clarke’s Creek of the Elizabeth River in what is now Portsmouth, Virginia. Head Rights were granted by Governor Berkeley of Virginia on 17 Mar 1667. The land was formerly granted to Rich Starnell by patt Dated the 11th of January 1652 and the said Starnell dying by his last Will & Testament gave & bequeathed the same to sd Rich Carney. (no explanation of why William Carney received the patent; perhaps a son of Richard. There is no proof that the William Carney transported by Mr. Ellyott was the William to whom the grant was given in 1667, but it is probable William Carney's will is found in Norfolk County Deed Book 4, page 149. It is dated 19 Oct 1681 and proved 15 Oct 1683. An abstract follows: . . . wife Abigaill Carney all that plantation whereon I now live during ye time & terme of her naturall life, and after her decease to my three sonnes (viz). James, Richar & David Carney . . . . . . to my daughter mary Carney . . . my Sone Jno. Carney . . . witnesses: Wm Bathusrst Robt. Jordan William Carney & Seale Unquote I was aware that Harrell and Elizabeth had the three children you identified. The only additional info I had was that Mary Elizabeth Carney married David C. Estes on 7 Dec 1856 in Montgomery Co. I have absolutely no info on the descendants of the three children and would appreciate anything you'd care to share. I agree! I just received a holiday card from Michael Carney in Thailand -- whom I met through the Roots List. He sent me a photo of his two boys, Emmett and Brendan, two Carney kids growing up in Thailand! Although we have determined we are probably not related, we grew up in the same neighborhood and have friends in common. Happy Holidays to all my Carney "family" online!
