TO: CARNEY-L@Rootsweb.com DATE: 8 FEBRUARY 2001 REF: ROLL CALL-Martha Carney Parker Stagner (1834-?) Hi List! I introduced myself to the Carney-List on 23 September 1999. Most of this ROLL CALL message will repeat my earlier message. My name is Rhea Stagner Das and I am a great granddaughter of Martha Carney Parker Stagner. Marthas maiden name was Carney. She was born in Salem, Dent County, Missouri in 1834. Her first husband, who died in 1856, was William Pleasant Parker. Her second husband was William Roland Stagner, whom she married in 1859. Martha Carney Parker Stagner, her husband William Roland Stagner, and their five children, are shown in the 1880 Federal Census of Dent County, Missouri (information courtesy of M.C. Shumate). William Roland Stagner and his children (including my grandfather) migrated to Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas in the 1890s. There is no mention of Martha Carney Parker Stagner being with them. Perhaps she died in Missouri before they left, or on the wagon route to Texas. William Roland Stagner died in 1899 in Coryell County, Texas. Martha Carney was reported to have been born in Salem, Dent County, Missouri, in 1834, and was the sister of John Carney, Edmond Carney, and Sylvester Carney. Their parents were Richard Carney Jr. and Julia Ann Robertson Carney (family history sources are M.C. Shumate and Steve J. Shults). Martha named her first child by her second marriage, Julia Ann Stagner, after her mother, Julia Ann Robertson Carney. Some vital statistics from Ozark Heritage Vol. III Dent County, Missouri, Area Cemeteries and Families 1851-1994 for John Carney and Edmond Carney are given at the end of this message. I would welcome any more precise information that you might have, or could direct me to, regarding Richard Carney Jr. and Julia Ann Robertson Carney. Where and when were they born? Where and when did they die, and where were they laid to rest? (The information which I have from M.C. Shumate and Steve J. Shults gives Richard Carney Jr.s birth as about 1805 and Julia Ann Robertson Carney as being born in Tennessee.) Id also like to know the actual birth date of Martha Carney Parker Stagner as well as any information about her death. There is some more information about Edmond Carney and John Carney in another volume of the Dent County Historical Society Ozark Heritage series about the Dent County, Missouri, Area. I will look it up and send it as a separate Roll Call message. Good luck to everyone in their searches! I've been reading this list for some time but haven't yet found anything. I'll try the roll call. A half dozen of us are searching this same line. Mary Carney, b. 1845, Ireland (Cork/Waterford?), emigrated ca. 1852 with her probable father, John (because of her young age). Not sure where. Mary married William Scanlon, place and date unknown, and is next found in Grass Valley, Nevada County, California between 1863 and 1870. William was a (probable) under- ground gold miner/diamond driller. In 1870, driven by the labor surplus caused by the end of the Civil War and the completion of the transcontinental railraod in 1869, they are found in Houghton, Michigan and soon after in Negaunee, Michigan, on that state's Upper Peninsula where they lived out their lives, William as an iron ore miner/diamond driller. William's parents, also William, and Margaret (Fox) from Ballyduff Upper, County Waterford, joined them there. I have a pretty much complete record of Mary's descendants since she was my greatgrandmother. Mary's younger brother, Thomas, is recorded on the 1900 census as having immigrated only in 1870. That date may be suspect. He is recorded on the 1900 Census as having immigrated in 1870, but there may have been a misunderstanding, and that date may mean the year he arrived in Michigan. For he married Ellen Toomey in Boston in 1870 (exact date and Church still unknown, but we just found this out the other day). Thomas and Ellen raised their nine children in Hancock or Houghton, Michigan, in copper country. I am in contact with the descendants of two of their children. But many gaps remain. Would be interested in contacting/getting further information on any of the following children of Thomas and Ellen, born in the 1870's and 1880's: Kathryn, Nancy Ann, Will, Nell, Alice, Thomas, Mame, Joseph and John (birth order not known, and certainly wrong). Thank you. Here are some Carney names I have. There was an Avis Carney from Higbee, MO and Mr. & Mrs. George Carney from Carthage, MO who attended a COOK family reunion in Higbee Aug. 1940. Avis Carney could have been Avis COOK b.March 1882. I have no idea who Mr. & Mrs. George Carney are. If anyone knows of either of these families, please contact me. I can also send the article of the COOK reuion if anyone is interested. I think these CARNEY's may have come from KY to MO. I am researching the ancestors and descendants of Patrick Carney and Catherine Dooley, who were born in Ireland and emigrated from England to Detroit, Michigan between 1856 and 1860, and from there to Bay City, Michigan, by 1867. Patrick was born about March 17, 1826 in Kings County, Ireland, exact location unknown. His wife Catherine Dooley was born possibly in 1828. Patrick was a brickmason by trade. In addition, Patricks father may have been named Rudolph or Raymond Carney (both names are mentioned on documents, but come from third parties) and his mother was possibly named Margaret. Patrick may have had a brother named Michael who came to join him in Bay City, but this has not been verified. There is a Michael Carney in Bay City c.1868 who is also a brickmason. Patrick and Marys Children are as follows: Name, Born, Died Edward Carney Abt 1850 in England - Abt 1883 in Bay City Michigan Catherine Carney 1853 in England - Unknown Mary Carney 1856 in England 1942 in Detroit, Michigan (Died as Mary Thompson) Rosalia Carney Abt 1858 Died before 1867 Patrick J. (let me try this again to see if I can get rid of that "not a subscriber" message) It's been a while since we've done this, so for all the new people that have subscribes recently why don't we all post a message with the Carney family information we are looking for and the names/locations of Carneys we have already discovered. If you have a web site, please post the URL as well. Thanks. Bill Carney www.billcarney.com/brickmasons
