Ellen, The history written by Lula Carney is short and simple, tells that James A. 1st ,came from Ireland, with his Irish wife, and his first born James A. 2d, was born aboard ship and family settled in Pennsylvania. James 1st, was a large land owner and set his son up on his own farm, which failed,as James 2d was a gambler and man of leisure. His father set him up again and again the son failed. He was set up again and failed. The mother wanted him set up for the fourth time, however the father, James 1st, refused and James 2d, married to a full blood French woman, named Mary, packed up his family and moved to Missouri. I have questions about this as his daughter Sabrina, was born in Tennessee. Sabrina was married a second time to Robert McMillen. Also , Sabrina had siblings of Amanda, James A. 3d, Samuel, Isaac, Mary, John. James Alexander Carney 3d was married 1st to Isabell Freemyre and 2d to Lydia Hilbert. James A. 4th was married 1st to Amelia Ann Rudicil and 2d to Anna Pultz. This James was a Baptist minister. I have gathered this much from many sources. Still nothing definite for proof of anything beyond Sabrina. There is some info on Carney's in the Family book of " Boltz/Puls/Pulse/Pults/Pultz Family of America through Johann Michael Boltz" by Paul and Bea Boltz and Bob and Carolyn Gerard. I Also have Boltz ancestors. I know this is a cut down version, but you can see, I really have nothing confirmed beyond Sabrina. Posted on: CARNEY Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/c/a/CARNEY/queries/53 Surname: Carney, Wells, Shadow, Tomlinson, Weston, Jones, Williams, Walker, Webb ------------------------- Hello Ron, I dont know if our families are related. However, there are many similarities between the families. First: My g g grandfather, Samuel Carney, may have marred a Martha Wells from Wellsville, Ohio. Second: My family also resided in Allegheny County (Becks Run Road, Mifflin Township, Homestead & Munhall). A few other pieces of information: Wellsville was supposedly named for the Wells family, Martha had a brother, who was a Dr., and two sisters. The town of Sistersville, Ohio may have been name after them. If any of the above information has a connection to your Carney family, I do hope that you will contact me and that we will be able to exchange information. Hoping that we both found a link to our past, Elbert Carney
Still looking for any information at all on Nancy CARNEY (b. 1806, Pa) who married Ezekial C. Clear in Gallia Co., Oh., Apr 27, 1824. Thank you, Rick Colyer
Posted on: CARNEY Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/c/a/CARNEY/queries/52 Surname: CARNEY ------------------------- I show a Sabrina m. to a Jack McFadden, daughter of James Alexander Carney and an Irish woman. James was b. in Ireland ca 1778. This is all I have on this family. Doesn't sound like you have any more information than I do. I sure would like to see a copy of that history you were looking at.
Sue, my information on Fix family is from Census data and Chadwick's History of Shelby Co., Indiana, pub. in 1909. James Van Benthuysen's biography in that volume states his father is Aaron Fix (I have also seen this as James Aaron) b. 1809, near Dayton, OH. Aaron was son of Philip Fix who lived in PA, and who married Abigail Hays of Ohio, (book says 1821, but that could definitely be a misprint unless he was married before). Philip went to Shelby Co. Indiana in 1821. He and Abigail had five children born to them as follows: Aaron, father of James V.B. Fix; Sarah married Elisha Townsend; Henry married Armenta Morris; Abigail married John McDonald; Antha M. married William Lackey. Aaron was Justice of Peace for 16 years. He married in 1830 to Margaret A. Van Benthuysen, daughter of James and Sarah (Smith) Van Benthuysen. After James death in 1850, Sarah married John Moore. Aaron died in 1874 and Margaret in 1877. The children of Aaron Fix were: James Van Benthuysen Fix; Susan , widow of John Karney (this is my husbands line); John deceased, remained single; Abigail married Joseph Robinson; Anthony, md. Joseph Patterson; William and Philip, deceased early; Mary Ann md. Henry Woodward; Stephen A. md. Lennie Doran; Aaron md. Callie Puffenbarger, died in 1907. James Van Benthuysen b. 16 May 1831, in Indiana md. 1. Rulannie Randolph in 1852 she died 1854, no children; 2. Mahala Ann Burkett, she died in 1874 there were 7 children: Margaret, John A, Stephen S., James, Charles, William, and Walter. 3. Arabelle Karney/Carney, daughter of John and Susan Karney (Susan is the sister of James V.B. and uncle of Arabelle "Bell") in 1876, two children: Voris M. and Leota. James V.B. died in 1913, Shelby Co., Ind. Arabella died 1913. Bell Fix came to Missouri to visit several times after her marriage and I have a picture of her taken with her siblings at a reunion before 1913. Some of this information is family lore, Bell was the oldest of John Valentine and Susan's children, her youngest sister did not die until 1953. There is also a published family history of the Van Benthuysen family done @ 1950. Anyway, yes, I think we have parallel lines. John Valentine born in 1833 married Susan Fix. Could John be a brother to your to your Joshua? Steve and I spent 3 days in Indiana tracing lines of Carneys trying to tie John Valentine to any of them with no luck. The Van Benthuysen family history says Susan Fix married John Valentine Carney, an orphan. I am in Missouri, so if I can help you with any lines in this state let me know. Both born in Ireland (dates and towns/counties unknown). Date of emigration and port of entry unknown, but they were in New York City for the birth of their son James in 1860 (see below). Ggrandfather James Carney born in New York City 1860. Married to Margaret Sullivan. Died in NYC November 10, 1917 -- occupation listed on his death certificate is "Driver". Margaret Sullivan Carney died in 1888 one week after the birth of her son, also named James (see below). Do not know if the elder James remarried, but buried in his grave are a one-year-old Thomas Carney who died in 1900, indicating perhaps a second wife, as well as two persons whose names are strange to us: Sarah Windrum aged 39 d. 1935 and Catherine Harris aged 65 d. 1936. Grandfather James Carney born in New York City 1886. Maried to Blanche Aubrey. Died in NYC July 8, 1922. He was reputed to be a trolley driver in New York City -- followed in his father's footsteps? Children were James (my father -- see below) and Harry. Father James Carney born in New York City 1911. Married to Norma O'Gorman. Children Lynn (me!), Norma, Blanche. Died January 23, 1995. Searching for birthplace in Ireland of Michael Carney and Mary Welsch Carney, as well as their immigration records. Also searching for any possible siblings of the James Carney born in 1860 and siblings/stepsiblings of the James Carney born in 1888. Other lines I am researching: Aubrey (NY and Mass), Diggins (Vermont and Mass), O'Gorman (Clarecastle/County Clare/Ireland and New York City), and Fogazzi (Italy, New York City, and San Francisco). Great idea to do the Roll Call -- hope there are some connections! Thanks.

This is in response to Bill CARNEY's posting yesterday for Carol OLSON (solson@planetkc.com). This is my FIX line, and very possibly also my CARNEY line. See my home page through the hyperlink listed below. Under the report titled "User Home Page Genealogy Report: Ancesters of Susan Elaine 'Sue' CEARLOCK", see Generation 8, people 150, Philip FIX, and 151, Abigail HAYES/HAYS, and their children. Child 10 is Susan FIX who married John Valentine CARNEY. I am descended from child 3, Cynthia FIX, who married John NEIGH. Under Generation 7 you will see that #74 John NEIGH and #75 Cynthia FIX's third child, #37, Matilda NIGH, m. #36 Joshua CARNEY. It seems very likely that John Valentine CARNEY and Joshua CARNEY were closely related to each other. According to my records, James Aaron FIX who married Margaret VAN BENTHUYSEN was the sixth child of #150, Philip FIX, and #151, Abigail HAYES/HAYS, and therefore a brother to Susan FIX who married John Valentine CARNEY. What is your source that Susan is a daughter to James instead of a sister? I would be interested in corresponding with anyone else who may be researching these lines.
