Greetings: Is anyone especially familiar with the cluster of CARNEY families in PHILADELPHIA ca: 1860? From several John Carneys in the 1860 census, trying to figure which one... ...marries Bridget Mellen and in Philadelphia have JOHN, JR. c. 1864, Mary Ann c. 1868, Margaret c. 1870; then to Lowell, Massachusetts for BERNARD in 1872 and PATRICK ca. 1873. JOHN, JR. m. Ellen Doherty and has Alice (1897) and a gone-missing Hugh Carney (1898), who might die in Wingdale, Dutchess County, New York, or NYC. BERNARD has 6 children, including a surviving Margaret, Joseph and Jennie, and moves to Methuen, MA. Joseph probably dies November, 1977. Margaret Carney, born February 1874, marries William Quigley, and they have Paul (4), William (2) and Frances (1 mo) by the 1920 census. PATRICK remains a mystery. Thanks, Bill namesleuth@aol.com
Well, since you asked... :-) Apparently there is a record of a marriage at St Martin chuch, Birmingham, Warwick, England dated 28 Jan 1845 between Patrick Carney and "Catharine Doley" (Catherine Dooley). I've had people look at the LDS microfilm and tell me what it says, but none of the three saw the same thing in the faded films. I don't want to write what they saw, as it might prejudice you when you saw it. This may be the marriage of our ancestor Patrick and Catherine Carney, and would explain why his first few kids were born in England. "Our" Patrick would have been 18/19 at the time, and Catherine keeps lying about her age all through her life. Must be a family gene, as my mother was 29 for over two decades. ;-) Anyhow, if you manage to make it to B'ham and have a few moments and can see the original source documents, I'd appreciate a quick transcription. I'd go myself, you see, but my wife prefers the warmer climate, like Barbados... > -----Original Message----- > From: PMHudak@aol.com [mailto:PMHudak@aol.com] > Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2001 9:13 AM > To: CARNEY-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [CARNEY-L] Michael Carney of Bay City, Michigan > > > Hi Bill -- > > Hope all is well with you! Who is this message meant for (Re: Huntones in Canandaigua) and why is it on the Carney rootsweb? Didn't see any mention of a Carney in it.
I don't know quite how to respond, but I just found your message regarding the Huntones in Canandaigua, New York. I have used this website a couple years ago, and found no information. I was surprised to say the least when I stumbled over the messages this weekend. I have recently started my quest again because my younger brother is interested now. It is quite disheartening to see how small our family is. Very little information at all, there is little or no information earlier than the greatgrandparents. Let me introduce myself, my name is Beth Huntone. I am the daughter of Albert(Pat or Patty when he was young) Brisbee Huntone Jr. I am the eldest of two children, my brother Patrick is seven years younger than me. He has a daughter that is eight years old now, Ashley Marie. I never meant my grandfather, Albert Sr. But my father did know about your family, I believe he had mentioned two girls in the second marriage. My father passed away when I was 19, from a heart attack. The men in the family seem afflicted with bad hearts and often suffer heart attacks in their 40's and 50's, the women too have trouble with heart conditions. I am not sure if you are looking for current relatives or just family history. Alice Lostow has been able to tell me a little about the family, she is in her 90's now and lives in the Clifton Springs area. She is certain that the Huntone name was not changed. She claims we have French/Canadian Indian ancestry, my greatgrandfather being Mohawk. I also have Tuscaurora on my father's maternal side. I have been involved with some volunteer activities over the years in the local Indian community, and know from the pics Alice has, of her father and brothers, that we are Indian. I know of the Dempsey grandmother also, and have an older cousin, Ray, that has followed that line in researching the family line. An interesting tidbit from Alice: The name Brisbee came from a lady that helped the family when they lived in the Bristol/Naples area. My greatgrandfather and mother were so thankful that they used her name. I talked to my mother about this, and it seems fitting for the ! time. There were many wealthy ladies that had charities or causes that they belonged to and worked for. Our theory is that this kind lady offered help to the family, probably because they were poor and/or Native American. I don't know much more than that, but would like the time later to research more thoroughly. I would be interested in talking to you, seeing as how you are my half-aunt by relation. :O) Beth
Hi Bill -- Hope all is well with you! I'm planning a trip to England and Scotland in October, and was wondering if you had any ideas on research places I may be able to visit, e.g., in Birmingham? Maybe get some info that will be useful to both of us ... Take care! Pat

As far as I know, I'm not a relation to Katherine Carney from Emporium PA.
hi group , I am wondering if any one on the list is connected to Michael Carney , born Ireland , c 1812 , Shown on page 425 B in the 1860 census Ross Co I think he is the father of my Thomas , Phil
Hi, Joanne. I have a list of 6 children of Stephen, Sr., too; probably from the same source: Stephen, Barnabus, Thomas, Nellie, Elizabeth and Rachel with no documentation. I would be very interested in any old land records you have for Stephen, Sr. In order for Nellie and my Eleanor to be one and the same, Nellie would have to be born no later than 1787, and that's stretching it. 1770 to 1780 might be more like it. I have him in Mamakating, NY in 1790 and in Wallkill, NY in 1800. During one of his stints in the Revolutionary War(1780) he was posted at Mamakating. Are any of your land records from the 1760s or the 1770s? I would love to know what town or towns he lived in during that period in order to pinpoint what church records to examine. You can contact me directly at: smithcommunique@home.com. Jim Smith

Carol, I am looking for parents/siblings of John Valentine Carney, b. 1833 Ohio. According to later census info he says his father was born in NY. John Valentine Carney married in Shelby County, IN and stayed there until moving to MO. Could he be related to Stephen? Seeking anyone who has done research on - Michael Carney, born abt 1834 , died April 6, 1883 in Bay City, Michigan USA. married to Mary (Carney) (died between 1914 and 1920 in Bay City). Sons James (born abt 1861 in England) and John (born abt 1864 in England, according to the 1880 census) Michael's occupation was a brickmason, as was my ancestor who lived in Bay City at the same time, Patrick J. Carney. Michael's entry in the Michigan death index says that his parents were named Rodger and Margaret Carney. My records from Patrick's death and other third-party sources note that his father was "Rudolph", but his marriage entry in Birmingham, England states that his father's name was Rodger. Patrick moved from Birmingham to Detroit, Mich between 1855 and 1860, and to Bay City by 1867. It appears Michael emigrated post 1864, if the 1880 Census is to be believed. Michael's obituary in the Bay City papers is a one-liner stating that he passed away. Patrick's was a large obit, but no mention of other family members other than his wife and kids. I'm trying to determine if Michael and Patrick were brothers (or cousins?).
I found the following web sites about the Rock of Cashel: http://www.historic.irishcastles.com/rockofcashel.htm http://www.cashel-palace.ie/rock.html http://www.tipp.ie/cashelsi.htm http://www.all-ireland.com/travel/attractions/r/rock-of-cashel.shtml I don't believe it has anything to do with the Kearney Castle. If my memory serves me correctly, the invitations my father got from the Carney Castle, (spelled Carney), showed a complete castle, not the small tower of what's left of the Kearney Castle. I do believe the invitations were for a Carney reunion week and I don't remember anything which led you to believe you would be staying in a Kearney Castle Hotel. (I'm probably wrong, as I was only about 16 at the time and I've slept since then.) I'll email this Kearney Castle Hotel and see if they ever mailed any such invitations or hosted a Carney Reunion Week. I'll let you know what I come up with.
