My great grandfather is Thomas Carmody, brother to your Patrick. My father's dear old cousin, who started the family history research on the Carmodys, always maintained that Patrick and Thomas' mother Bridget's surname was Clarence! I'm fairly sure Bridget was illegitimate, and the poor girl probably invented names for herself, as it suited! In the immigrant book of the "Magistrate" in 1838, she is given as being a "native of Kilmurry, Co. Clare, daughter of Nancy Whally[?Meally], Dairy Maid, of the same place" whereas Patrick is given as a "native of Kilmurry, Co. Clare, son of John Carmody, Farmer, of the same place". so maybe all the confusion stems from her illegitimacy. Apparently she died giving birth to the twins in 1850, which led to big problems for Patrick - what was he to to do with his motherless children? Eventually he took them to Werris Creek to live with their Uncle [?Patrick's brother John]. Thomas [the eldest boy] wasn't happy there and ran away at the age of 14 [about 1856] with a teamster to the Moree district. He was working in the area when, aged 22, he married Mary Hoy at "Wirrah" Station, [?near Moree] If your Patrick was born about 1845, it fits better as Thomas was always said to be the eldest boy and Patrick would have only been a little boy of 6 or 7 when his mother died. The family as I know it is; 1. Annie b 1841 d 1916 m 1. Thomas Callinan 1862 . 2. William Smith 1877 2. Thomas b 24 Jan 1842 d 8 Dec 1911 m Mary Hoy 1864 3.
