Surnames: Carmody/Sinclair Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/mbexec/msg/5538/UiH.2ACIB/164 Message Board Post: im trying to find out more information about the ancestors of my grandfather john carmody whose parents were irish but he was a cockney. he married mary sinclair from a scottish island called vattersee and they had a daughter (my mum) theresa carmody, born in oban in approx 1956 who sadly died in 1985 from a brain tumour. john died around 1966.they lived in bournemouth for quite some time and my grandmother mary still does live there but doesnt know much about his family. i know this is very vague but i had to take a stab in the dark!!

The following is a listing of the Carmody family from which I descend. This Carmody family originated in Illinois in Macoupin County, specifically Nilwood. This family was headed by James Carmody of Ireland and Bridget Ahern of Ireland. They had the following children: Thomas b. 3 Apr 1865; Mary b. 17 Mar 1868; Patrick Michael b. 17 Dec 1869; Catherine (Kate) b. 1 Oct 1873; Margaret (Maggie) b. 1875; James (Jimmy) b. Apr 1876; Ellen (Ella) (Emma) (Ella Lou) b. 17 Sep 1878; Daniel William b. 21 Oct 1879; Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. 1881 and Anna b. Mar 1887. Where in the US did your Carmody's go? My John Carmody was born in Ireland and died in Franklin Co, Mass or at least was living there on the last census I find him on, the next census I find his widow Winnifred (unknown maiden name) also born in Ireland. I am new to this list and just started researching my dad's family in January. My father's mother's mother was Elizabeth Margaret CARMODY (1858 or 60 to 1927), the daughter of John CARMODY (died 1882) and Mary CORBETT (died 1922). Elizabeth married Timothy CALLAHAN and lived in Charlestown, NH, but my grandmother's birth certificate says she (Elizabeth) was born in Ludlow, VT. While looking for Elizabeth I found a lot of Carmodys in Rutland city directories from 1876-1913 when I ran out of time. The names seem right for "my" Carmodys. I know John served in the Civil War and it looks like he had a brother Thomas who also served. The 1880 Census shows John's brother MIchael and Michael's two young daughters (presume wife died) were living with John. There were CORBETTs in Rutland at the same time, but I don't know Mary's parents' names. I know they all came from Ireland but don't know when. Does anyone have any information on the Carmodys or Corbetts? Robin in Maryland
