    3. I was very pleased to find offers of help with my query re the location Backs, the residence of John Lewis - further details have been requested by listers. The details on the certificate I have are: Church of Pendine, Carmarthenshire, Marriage March 13th 1851 John Lewis full age, bachelor, labourer, residence: Backs, father: John Lewis, farmer Mary Phyllips full age spinster, servant, residence: Ashwell, father: Enoch Phyllips, weaver Witnesses David Lewis, David Harries Reg. Dist: Narberth Additionally I have a record from Pendine Parish showing: Baptisms: 12.10.1845 John Lewis bapt illeg. child of John Lewis and Mary Phillips, Ashwell lab Is this the illeg. child of the above couple who subsequently married? If so why is the location of the child's father shown as Ashwell farm in 1845 but Backs in 1851? Without a doubt Ashwell Farm Pendine is the 'seat' of my Lewis family in the 2nd half of the 19th century. It's this reference to Backs that is throwing me. Was it just a house in Pendine? Again , grateful for the response to my enquiry - perhaps these details will generate more! Regards Alan

    3. Hi Alan Do you think the census I gave to you re Backs is the father of John Lewis, I think so.....perhaps John Lewis junior was working in Ashwell farm and that is where he met Mary Phyllips.......probably when he was asked where he was from he said 'Backs' although living in Ashwell....stranger things have happened....... 3. Hi Pauline Yes I do think now that this is my man - this John Lewis is my gggrandfather. Just one query - if you have the census for Pendine is it possible to comment on whether Backs was a house or a farm and can you say roughly how far it was from Ashwell farm? I am happy to close this issue down if you would care to comment off-list, Pauline Thanks for your help.
