    3. Hello all Some of you may have seen a letter in the Feb edition of Family Tree magazine from someone trying to find someone linked to a welsh bible that he has had or some time but it is not linked to his family and he would like to pass it on to the right people. He has sent me a scan o the page which was partially obscured in the picture in the magazine and I think I have identified the family. One of the written entries was for a grandchild Jackie who died aged 5 on Feb 16 1927 and was buried in Box cemetery. That gave me the clue that linked possibly to Llanelly and I think the family is the one shown in 1911 as 3 Delabeche St Llanelly DAVIES, David Head Married 39 Pit Helper In Steel Work Carmarthen Pencarreg DAVIES, Eleanor Wife Married 37 Carmarthen Llanllwni DAVIES, Mary Jane Daughter Single 17 Dressmaker Carmarthen Llanllwni DAVIES, David Thomas Son 14 Grocer Boy Carmarthen Llanelly Married 18 years 2 children both living. All four of these are mentioned in the bible. The family is also in Delabeche St in the 1901 census. I think I found a possible marriage that points to the wife as Eleanor Jones born Llanllwni. Do any of you have a link to this family at all? Cheers Pat -- pat

    3. Hi Peter I too have looked in 1881 for either Roger Jones and cannot see them.......How do you know that Roger Jones senior was born prior to 1852.....do you have him in any census at all, maybe the 1871? Where does it give his place of birth in the census returns that you have..... I have looked for a baptism in Llandebie parish church, but not one for a Roger Jones... Let me know Pauline -----Original Message----- From: carmarthenshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:carmarthenshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter Jones Sent: 22 January 2010 16:24 To: CARMARTHENSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [CMN-L] Roger Jones Hi I wonder if someone can help me with my brick wall. I have taken my maternal grandfather back to 1690 but I just can't seem to make much headway with my paternal grandfather. His name is Roger JONES and when he married my Grandmother, Elizabeth LEWIS of Brynamman on 29 May 1892 in Llandebie, he was a Collier and allegedly aged 20 (ie born c1872). I say allegedly because whilst this ties in fairly well with the 1901 (aged 27) and very well with the 1911 (aged 39 born in the Rhondda, Glamorgan) I have not been able to find a suitable Roger born in Wales c1872? Nor have I been able to locate him on either the 1881 or the 1891. Strangely, I can't find any trace of his father either. He was also called Roger JONES and would have been born sometime before 1852. I have a note of my Grandfather's siblings from a deceased family member's memory but I know nothing more about them other than the fact that Sarah Jane JONES married a James POWELL. The other siblings are Rees and Morgan JONES. Roger JONES (c1872) was wounded in WW1 and he was left with a shaking arm and head as a result. He lived with his wife Elizabeth at 32 Harold St Tirydial, Ammanford until he died around about 1934. I can remember going to that house in the 1940's and being given some of the home made toffee that my grandmother always seemed to have available for us children. Grandmother Elizabeth was well known up and down the Valley for the home made ointments she used to sell. Her most famous one being the burn ointment she sold to the Tinplate and Iron Workers. Hence she was known as Mrs Jones Yr Eli, or Mrs Jones the Ointment. If anyone else knows about or is researching this family I would very much appreciate finding out something more about these grandparents. 3. Hi Fee Thanks for this......registration was not law until 1874 for births or deaths...thus many went through the net. Not all children were baptised either, as for some it was either baptising the child or being able to have bread on the table..normally the bread won.. Okay, its a deal if you collect ALL the Jones's let me know as I have given up on mine.......I have Hannah Jones baptised somewhere around 1826-1828 father David !!!! Probably in Llanpumpsaint....any connections to yours?? I also have Davies from Conwil Elved.....I have only gone back to Daniel Davies born 1806 Conwil Elved but lost him after 1851, I think these dropped off the face of the earth or are buried in fields in Carmarthenshire somewhere.......these too were non-conformists, whom are very difficult to trace...he ended up in St Peters Carmarthen, his son Thomas Davies(b.1828) my great gt. grandfather moved to Burry Port (Pembrey parish) where he and his family are buried. Thanks for your help, if you can think of anything let us know..... I have a few of my Hughes family from Carmarthen that don't seem to be in the official record anywhere. I have been working on the assumption that they may have been Methodists or some other form of non-conformists, and that therefore they won't have been baptised in the Church of England. For my Hughes family it is extraordinary that they weren't in the birth registers from 1837, but I believe that initially it was the responsibility of the Registrar to ensure that births were registered and not the parents. What I am assuming is that there was a very close tie-up between the baptisms in the church and the names registered... maybe babies who were from Methodist families were sometimes missing from the official record too? I'm hoping that someone with better knowledge than me about non conformists in Wales in the 19th century may read this post or yours and comment. I know there are methodist records in various places. The other possibility which has come up again and again in my wider family is that the children were sometimes baptised in batches... so a child born in 1872 might not turn up in the records for baptisms until five or even ten years later. I think that's more common in the early part of the 19th century, when the charges went up for baptism for a while, but certainly I have several groups of children being baptised whethe youngest was a month old but the eldest was anywhere from four to twelve years old. If you know where your ancestors were from the census, it would be worth looking all around the dates of birth for siblings for dates of baptisms. I have some Jones as well as Hughes in my family in Carmarthen, but tracing them is the very devil. 3. Hi I wonder if someone can help me with my brick wall. Peter Jones - now living in Hornchurch Essex

I have a link to fin burials in Box if you'd like it I can look it up.
