Hi List, Just to thank all of you kind people who translated my ancestors gravestone for me. Much appreciated , also your tips on cleaning said stone to enable it to be read easier, I shall have to wait till next year when I go again on holiday to my beloved Carmarthenshire. And yes it was great to find it, as the last time I was in Llanegwad I couldnt get inside the churchyard ,it was cordoned off due to repairs. This time however I managed it! Thank you all once again . Cheers Jackie from East Sussex. The only way to look into the future, Is by standing on the shoulders of the past.

Hi Jackie I have managed to "read" some gravestones by covering the lettering with paper and scribbling over it with a pencil i.e. a form of brass rubbing. This could help. Jackie, Congratulations on finding your ancestor's headstone - you are lucky! I suggest taking a spray bottle with water and wetting the stone as that will sometimes make it easier to read. Also, try reading it from different angles. On one headstone we couldn't read, we carefully dabbed some damp dirt (which can act as an abrasive if rubbed) into the engraved sections on a stone making the words darker so they stand out more. Afterwards the dirt can be washed out using the spray bottle of water. On stones that are flaking, I would avoid using any sort of a brush or anything that touches them (besides water). On studier stones, a very soft brush might not hurt them to clean them up a bit. Taking pictures of stones at different angles and in different lighting (bring a flashlight or mirror) then enhancing them on the computer also helps. Awhile back I read where headstones can now be photographed using thermal imaging which is nondestructive and does an amazing job in making the illegible become legible! Unfortunately, not a piece of equipment we can throw in our bags, yet anyway! Good luck, Kathy
Hello list, Anybody familiar with the Evans family from Dafen, Llanelly. Think they were at New Road, Dafen near 1891. Son Thomas Rhys Evans, born 1892 at Dafen, married my Elisabeth Thomas at Adulam Felinfoel. Would like to find out more on the Evans family. Know that Thomas Rhys Evans had a sister called Lettice Evans. She was a witness at his wedding in 1915. Elwyn - netherlands.

Hello list, Wonder if somebody is familiar with this abode in Llanelly. Know that my Roberts ancestors were farming there near 1823. Can somebody tell me if the farm is still there? Elwyn - Netherlands.
Hello list, Wonder if somebody has come across William Charles and Ann Robert. Married 1867 at Adulam Chapel, Felinfoel. William Charles, Furnace, born 1844, son of David Charles. Ann Robert, born 1848, dau of Thomas Robert, Felinfoel. Her father had deceased before 1867. No nothing about this part of my Roberts ancestors. Elwyn - Netherlands.
Hi, I wonder if SKS has any details on marriages for the Llanelli and surrounding areas. I am looking for the marriage of Walter Williams to Ann Thomas. On 1841 census they are both aged 25, and the first born, Jane is circa 1838. However, Jane might not be the daughter of Walter, and also a marriage for Walter Williams to a Jane Thomas circa 1862-1868. I think the marriage may be between 1835-1838, I'm not sure. The children listed as theirs on the 1851 are: Jane 1838 Thomas 1840 William 1842 David 1845 Walter 1848 I think may have died before 1861 Mary 1850 The areas in question are Llangathen (Llangethen) area which is north of Llanelli, so I'm told and also Llanedy. Although census say they were living at Wern and Upper Wern, Llanelli, it's been pointed out that the 1841 actually says Llanedy. Much obliged if anyone can help Regards Helen
