Hello Lyn Yes Glanareth in Llangadog was where William Powell lived. I would think it almost certain that Glanareth was the name of his house. I have an account of the murder in "The Black Flag over Carmarthen" by Peter J R Goodall. I haven't seen what is on the interenet -so maybe you already have seen all the info that is in my account. However if you would like me to key it in for you I will. It lists the nine people who were charged with the murder and states which of them was hanged. William Williams who was supposed to be the ringleader had already fled to France where he later drowned. It was said that he wanted to marry William Powell's wife. If some of this sounds new to you let me know. I also have a mention in the diary of Thomas Jenkins of Llandeilo, who lived much later - but obviously knew of the murder as on March 24th 1839 he says he went to Pontbrenaraeth to see the house built by Wm Powell A.D. 1762 and where he was afterwards murdered by a band of ruffians in 1770. Hi Lyn I don't know if this will add anything to the information you already hold but there are extracts from a contemporary pamphlet account of the trial at _www.earlymodernweb.org.uk/waleslaw/glanarth_ (http://www.earlymodernweb.org.uk/waleslaw/glanarth) . It gives grisly details of the murder and also mentions that Mrs.Powell had a brother referred to as Captain Bowen There is a marriage of Catherine Bowen of Llandilo Fawr to William Powell at Llangadock on 10 March 1758. Hope this helps, Yvonne R.
Found this under Glanarth.....according to the murder write up William Powell was a gentleman.....extract from Carmarthenshire Homes and Their Families.... .................Much later in 1758 William Powell gent, natural son of William Powell of Llanerch Bledri married Catherine daughter of John Bowen of Gurrey near Llandeilo. His putative father left him all his estate; and after a while he left Llanerch Bledri and settled at Glanareth. He was murdered in his parlour in 1770. The widow later married Cyprian Randeau Bunce of Canterbury, but was again a widow in 1783, then living in Hereford. William Powell left two daughters and coheirs - Catherine who in 1777 married John Lucas of Stouthall, Glamorgan, and Anne. It was after the murder of 1770 that Glanareth mansion was abondoned. In 1841 Glanareth farm was ownd by one John Samuel with William Griffiths as tenant. Lyn Could be them as Bethlehem is either in Llangadog or Llanddeusant neighbouring parishes of Llandeilo fawr....Glanareth could be the name of a property......do you know why he was murdered.......what account was given on it, may be a few little clues there. Was there a letter of administation after his death do you know? The IGI only contains the bishops transcripts not the actual parish registers, some are even donated by relatives, in that instance the infomation is guesswork..... I will see if I can see Catherine/Katherine Bowen's baptism in Llandeilo fawr...... Daniel , A reply in haste as I am just back and reading many messages. I understand your problems working from a distance. I do not think my Lewis are connected to yours till I look at dates carefully. I do have Rachel LEWIS BORN 1838 in Carmarthenshire, she gives the location of birth differently at different times but they are all correct!basically 2 miles from St Clears and near Laugharne. Her Marriage to my GTxxGrandfather Lewis MORGANS born 1834 Pembrokshire was in LLanfihangle Abercowin /Abercywn in 1870. Her youngest brother and last in the family did emigrate and now has family in Texas with whom I am in contact. So there could be a connection through him. The other possibility, that may help you could be the Lewis family members I have found who are not mine but Carmarthenshir/Pembrokshire.born. If you would like me to look back over what I have let me know either on List or at pippyx@tiscali.co.uk This is not the magic reply we all wait for but I think worth mailing in case something looks useful. If you have any other odd snippets of information and want to mail them then it often helps. Hello Pauline and Valerie, Thank you very much for checking Breconshire 1851. Unfortunately, the closest connection I can make here is that possibly this William could be a nephew. It looks as if the name "William" was a popular name in the Edwards families. I truly appreciate all your efforts. Regards, Jane in Cal.
Hello, Diana, Thank you very much for checking the 1841 Llanelly census for WILLIAM EDWARDS, but it doesn't seem as if this is the one. However, there is a possibility that the DANIEL EDWARDS listed here, born in 1816, could be a brother to WIlliam. I do know William had a brother named THOMAS... How could I go about finding a record of William's birth or baptism? The date he was born is Feb. 27, 1817. this would list his parents' names. I truly appreciate all of the information you have provided to me. Regards, Jane in Cal..
