I have so many posts online it is caused me to use a spreadsheet to keep track of them ! If your in the UK in Oct. I might be there too !! The Origin of the CARLON surname seems to be from Co. Mayo Ireland, and something exists to do with the Apparition. As for any in Australia, I would beat and start my search in the convict (as I do hate that term, but it is what is used) records in the 1700-1800 time frame, first. If that fails to find your ancestors, Father's Father, Father, ect...I would widen the search to later times -- it would seem you need to know the earliest ancestor there, and then you know better where to look. Lacking that, I think databases exist for the records making it easy. And, a GREAT file about those times is the Aust. Movie, AGAINST THE WIND, it is about Irish who were shipped there, one couple, for stealing their own cow back -- great series from Australia !! If I find anything to the surname will post it.. Author: UN6647 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/1.8.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I think I can help you with this if you want to email me directly at hapnken@teleport.com. This probably will get a little involved for trying to provide an answer on this platform. Joseph Taylor Carlon (also known as Taylor Joseph Carlon) was to me a 1st cousin three times removed, and his grandfather Joseph Carlon was my 3rd great grandfather. The short answer to your question is that the link between Joseph Carlon (who married Elizabeth Caldwell) and Joseph Taylor Carlon was Joseph Carlon, Jr., who married Sarah H. Ramsey (daughter of James Ramsey and Sarah Taylor). Incidentally, another daughter of James Ramsey, Lavinah/Lavina Ramsey, was the first wife of my great grand uncle Kinsey Carlon. Kinsey and Joseph Taylor Carlon were first cousins. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've been tracing Carlon's. My grandfather was Jos. W (1883-1915) Great-uncle Lee (1877-1915) [born Leesburg, Mercer Co., PA] Where I encounter a problem is with great-grandfather, Joseph Taylor Carlon (1807-1880) m. Sarah (no last name) [1812-1881] Now, the Joseph you mention (married to Elizabeth Caldwell Carlon) had ten children; one of whom was named Joseph. But there is a gap between that Jos. and JT Carlon. Does this help; can you fill in anything? Grandmother (wife of Jos. W.) came from Ireland--Lavestenil??? My father was one of Joseph W.'s sons--Russell Eugene Carlon. Brother Kenneth Carlon. She was from Haydock England and this is where she met my GFthr and married in the 1920-1921, I know her parents lived there (or someone) as she had tow other sisters (Catherine, think named after her Mother which I think was Catherine )nee Hughes) Carlon, Michael or John Carlon was their Father...never knew when their Parents passed as when they came to the US in 1923 (spent the intervening years in Sligo Ireland ) they never went back from what I know.. So if you could tell me all you know I will return with all I know...been searching Carlon surname in Lancashire/St. Helens area of the UK for some 10 years now, even called a few Carlons there...they must have thought I was nuts..... Author: Murph_ Surnames: Murphy, Carlon, Hughes Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/15.20.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi There V, The Irish roots you are probably decended from, possibly (without more facts, where you are, etc.. it is hard to tell) but many Irish that were fighting in the Mexican American War , follow the below link http://www.fff.org/freedom/fd0407f.asp Many of the Irish were of the Los San Patricios, or "Those of Saint Patrick." I have not done any research on it but as the Carlon or O'Carlon is a common Irish surname it is not outside the possibility one of them were in the unit and stayed and had a family and somehow you are a decendent of them. I am tracking the Carlon surname and it is certainly from Ireland, possibly Co. Mayo, near the Knock Shrine or near Kiltimagh, not sure and maybe I never will be but the name is well documented in Ireland from the Bards of O'Carolan. Author: Murph_ Surnames: CARLON, HUGHES, MURPHY, O'HARA, Sorenson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/104/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear all message members, Searching for any and all information and leads on CARLON surname in the UK and IRELAND. UK areas of Staffordshire (Newcastle under Lyme), St. Helens/Haydock, Lancashire (Newton-le-Willows) and Liverpool, from the 1850s-1900s time frame (before and after) PlEASE CONTACT ME! My maternal GF John CARLON married Catherine, nee HUGHES sometime late 1800s (probably 1890 /- 10 years) from census returns stated originally from Ireland. Family lore has origin of CARLON from in or around Co. Mayo either Knock or Kiltimaugh, possibly around or after the famine. Catherine Hughes was possibly from the UK or Ireland and family moved from Newcastle under Lyme to HAYDOCK. Had daughters Annie, Catherine, and Margaret. All the sisters left for USA. Anyone with ANY CARLON History or information of this surname is very much encouraged to contact me as I am trying to write and ascertain the complete surname history, its basis in the UK and Ireland. Any information, clues, lore, or stories (*anything*) will be greatly appreciated (no matter how insignificant you think it is please pass this information on) as any family "lore" or stories may help and so these can be recorded into a comprehensive story of the surname that is being written for publication! Thanks so much! Murph_ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
