Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/110/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Been trying to find if any CARLON are still in the Warrington area of the UK, St. Helens, Haydock, and other close by areas outside Liverpool to Manchester. My GMthrs. Ancestors were from this area in the 1920s and their parents passed and it appears some close family members, Aunt, Uncles, Cousins, must have taken care of them in this period -- since then contact has been lost and I would like to see if any remain before heading that way across the pond Murph_ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Murph_ Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/35.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear aw, Timothy and Others, Sorry if others have not been able to get to the links and emails -- post here (if you have your "My Account" settings set to notify you). As for Carlon surname generally Carlon or CarOlan and other different spellings. Remember, written words by most was NOT common, most was spoken words passed down generation by generation until someone finally wrote it down based on how they HEARD it, so spelling really means little as I have seen CARLIN, CARLON, and many variations. My CARLON/CAROLAN (as it seems the "O" was dropped at some point) originate in County Mayo, Ireland, in the 1800s, Gallen Barony, see http://www.ajmorris.com/dig/toc/mayres.htm (Which I think was transferred to County Sligo at somepoint) nonetheless, my CARLON Ancestors originally from my early searches were from county mayo, ireland. Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/105.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Worries, I have seen the same questions here from Mexican Ancestors asking how Irish were in Mexico and it all goes back to two or three events - One, the Irish Potato Famine empties much of Ireland (if you had nothing to eat you would probably leave too) and to a greater degree the NW including Co. (County) Mayo and County Sligo -- We researchers often drop the "CO" or "County" as We know the name but it is the actual name of the Counties in Ireland -- so the famine cause mass emigration and Some ended up in Mexico or Texas and into Mexico. Look to http://www.houstonculture.org/mexico/irish.html Secondly the St. Patrick's Division of Santa Anna's was well known for Bravery - so they ended up with grants or living in Mexico. I do wish Someone would track and list all the CARLON and CAROLANS in Mexico, but the simple answer to your Question was many Irish ended up in Mexico as they did in every other Country in the World ! Author: cleblanc6318 Surnames: Carlon, Deslondes Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.carlon/15.20.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There is a family of mixed race Carlons from New Orleans. I have been attempting to help a descendant find out more about his direct line. His grandmother was Alice Carlon, d/o Charles Etienne Carlon and Eloise Deslondes; Charles Etienne was the s/o Etienne Carlon and Josephine. And Etienne's mother was Marie Carlon, born in 1806 in Cuba, but died in New Orleans. As far as I can tell, the family were free people of color and must have had some status to marry Eloise Deslondes, a wealthy free woman of color. What do you know of your mother's lineage?
