    1. Barbara CARLOCK VAN BEBBER MCBEE (1805 - 1888) of Claiborne Co., TN
    2. Susan Tilleman
    3. The following message was posted to the Claiborne Co., TN, list yesterday. Also see the following report, including sources. Within that report, I have Barbara's lineage as follows. Note that I do not yet have proof that either Barbara was the daughter of Henry or that Henry was the son of Frederick. However, evidence does seem to support these relationships. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/GENE18-0001.html Hans GERLACH David GERLACH/CARLOCK Frederick Cornelius CARLOCK probably Henry CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK Barbara CARLOCK The following notes appear in my database with regard to Henry: "Mecklenburg Co., NC, court minutes, Aug. 4, 1787, 'Kerlock & the Landess vs. Joseph Rogers', say that Henry KERLOCK was awarded money 'for the orphans of Christopher Landess, deceased, viz Jacob, Felix and Elizabeth'. Furthermore, the 1790 federal census for Morgan District, Rutherford Co., NC, shows a listing for a Henry CURLOCK, with 3 free white males under 16, and 5 free white females. Assuming that 2 of the males are Jacob and Felix LANDESS, 1 of the females was his wife, and 1 was Elizabeth LANDESS, this leaves 1 additional male under age 16 and 3 additional females living in the household. This compiler believes that both this Henry CURLOCK/KERLOCK and the David CARLOCK who was in Mecklenburg Co., NC, in 1803, and Warren Co., KY, in 1810, are both possible fathers of George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC. George m. Rachel LANDERS, granddaughter of the above-mentioned Christopher LANDESS. Further research is needed to determine if Henry or his wife was somehow biologically related to Christopher LANDESS or his wife. The surnames of both of the wives are unknown to this compiler at this time. Henry probably migrated to the Powell River Valley of Campbell Co., TN. The first deed recorded in Campbell Co., TN, was from a Thomas CAMPBELL to a Henry CARLOCK for 500 acres. Households for both a Joseph and a James CARLOCK appear in the 1830 census for Campbell Co., TN. Also, a Joseph CARLOCK was elected both Collector of Public Revenue and Sherriff, Dec. 12, 1826, Campbell Co., TN. Furthermore, the Barbara CARLOCK, d/o Henry and Sally CARLOCK, b. 31 Jan. 1805, in the neighboring county of Claiborne Co., TN, was probably this Henry's daughter. If Joseph was Henry's son, this could strengthen the argument for the above-mentioned David CARLOCK being the father of George W. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, instead of Henry. However, there is also a Joseph CARLOCK (s/o Lemuel, Hanchrist, David, according to Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book) who roughly fits the description of this Joseph. Furthermore, according to the book 'History of the Carlock Family', by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, Joseph's father Lemuel also had a son named John who migrated to Allen Co., KY, and had descendants who, like the above-mentioned George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, lived in both Warren Co., KY, and Fayette Co., IL. Some of John's descendants, found in Texas and Oklahoma, also used the spelling "CEARLOCK" for their surname. It is also possible that Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book may contain errors regarding the relationships between Lemuel, Joseph, and John. Additional research in NC, TN, and KY records is needed with regard to al! l of the above-mentioned individuals." The above-mentioned George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK and Rachel LANDERS were my 6g-grandparents. For additional information about Martha Washington MCBEE (d/o Barbara CARLOCK) and her descendants, see the following postings which appeared on the Claiborne Co., TN, list today: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TNCLAIBO/2003-08/1062210541 http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/TNCLAIBO/2003-08/1062211656 Susan Cearlock Tilleman -----ORIGINAL MESSAGE----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 11:56:10 -0400 Subject: [TNCLAIBO-L] Re: Richard Tolliver Roberson Below is a transcribed portion of a Letter from Earl Wilson QUINTRELL, dated Dec 3, 1980, to Cora Ann VAN BEBBER / SMITH, my grandmother. This letter mentions his relationship to Richard Toliver ROBERSON. Hope this helps some. Steve Smith ------------ .................... "My mother is Hattie Elizabeth WILSON. She married Clay Alson QUINTRELL who was born in FANNIN County, Georgia. Hattie Elizabeth WILSON was the daughter of Emma McStella ROBERSON and William WILSON. You may know some of her brothers and sisters. They are Myrtle Lee WILSON who married Tom SOWDERS. Another child was Dit Thomas WILSON, named after Dr. Tit Thomas who delivered him there in the Valley. Another sister was Lula WILSON who went to High School there in the Valley. She married Lance WOOLUM. THere are other brothers and sisters but they were not born in the valley not did they ever live in the valley. Emma McStella ROBERSON was the daughter of Richard Toliver ROBERSON and Martha Washsington McBEE. In the Valley, her father was known as "Uncle Tol ROBERSON" and he died in 1922. He and his family are buried in the ALEXANDER Graveyard there in the Valley. Other children of Uncle Tol were: Aggie ROBERSON, who married Nelson PETERS. They lived at Grandpa Toliver's old place there on the upper waters of DAVIS Creek. There was another daughter, Lou Ann ROBERSON, who was the wife of Gideon SHARP. Their three sons were Frank, Clayton, and Glenn. Glenn SHARP lives there in the Valley now. Another daughter of Grandpa Toliver was Aunt Barbara ROBERSON. She never married and she lived with Aunt Lou Ann and Uncle Gideon SHARP until she died. She is also buried int he ALEXANDER Graveyard. There were two sons of Grandpa Toliver but they died young. I feel sure that you may recall some of these names. Martha Washington McBEE who married Richard Toliver ROBERSON was the daughter of William McBEE and his second wife, Barbara CARLOCK / VAN BEBBER. You see, Great Grandpa William McBEE married twice. His first wife was Ann WILLIAMS, the daughter of Polly and William WILLIAMS. There were about nine children by the first marriage. Barbara CARLOCK married Gabriel VAN BEBBER and there were four chldren by this marriage. THey were Emily, Marlena, Alexander, and Granville. Granville moved to Missouri, but I do not know what became of Alexander. When William McBEE's first wife died - it was about the time that Gabriel VAN BEBBER died - he ended up marrying Barbara CARLOCK / VAN BEBBER. >From this marriage there was a second family of about six children and one of these was Martha Washington McBEE. Thus, you see, Mrs. SMITH, I am connected to the VAN BEBBER family only thorugh the second marriage and through a child of htis marriage who was my great grandmother Martha Washington McBEE / ROBERSON. Actually my blood line is ROBERSON /McBEE/ CARLOCK - I miss the VAN BEBBER blood entirely. My mother's father, William WILSON, was the son of David M. WILSON and Clory MOYERS. Other children of this family were Harriet, who died early, Rachael WILSON who married Thomas COLLINS, There there were two or three sons none of whom lived in the valley. I know that the father of David M. WILSON was William Smith WILSON. I also know that Nathaniel C. WILSON, the brother of William S. WISON, is buried in the YOAKUM Graveyard there behind the white Church. This gives you a pretty good run-down as to who I am. Further, I am 60 years old and I am retired from 22 years in teh United States Navy. I work at the University of Tennessee. I came to Knoxville and began to work at the University 17 years ago. There are seven children in my family. All of us are alive and my mother is alive and she is 83 years old. She is well and she lives in Winchester, Tennessee." ----- Original Message ----- From: "loretta wilhelm" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 26, 2003 11:42 AM Subject: Richard Tolliver Roberson > Hello, Steve---- > > A few days ago you responded to a question I listed about my great-great > grandfather Richard Tolliver Roberson (ROBERTSON).
