Alice, I found your email and will get in touch with you privately. In the mean time, here are some Carlocks/Gerlocks who arrived in America: "SAMUEL" Arrived August 1732 Wendell Gerlach ===== "EDINBURGH" Arrived Oct. 1753 (Rotterdam to Baltimore): Nicholas Gerloch Arrived Sept. 1754 (to Philadelphia): Herman Gerlach Johannes Gerlach Johannes, by the say, is the same as John Hans or just Hans.
Who are you? We are related! I printed off your message, then apparently filed it in the wrong folder. (I can only work on one line at a time, so file new mail as it comes in to answer later.) Anyway, you wrote and told me to go easy on your 80-year-old eyes and to write you back in a darker color. How's this? Anyway, I recall you had Carlocks in Schuyler County, Illinois. My William Vance Carlock (cousin to the W.V. Carlock who everyone THINKS is mine) had a son, Francis/Ransom Marion Carlock born in Schuyler County, Illinois while the family was visiting relatives there. My Carlocks actually lived in Wayne County, Missouri (later Stoddard Co.). PLEASE WRITE ME BACK WITH YOUR FAMILY LISTINGS AGAIN! I MISS YOU! Then I'll send you mine - in dark ink. P.S. If you have Family Tree Maker, you can send me your family on that. Katheryn Haddad

One of the subscribers to the CARLOCK and CEARLOCK lists was kind enough to tell me about the following site which searches the holdings of several book dealers, allowing you to compare price, shipping costs, etc.: www.addall.com. The cheapest price I just found for the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, through this site was a used copy through a source called "Classbook". The cost was $78.10, plus shipping of about $4.95, bringing the total cost to about $83.05. Sue
I am forwarding the following message from Georgia JOHNSON of Richardson, TX, because it contains so much good information about researching through the LDS Family History Centers. I am not including the information that she says she copied "from the LDS Family History Library Catalog available at www.familysearch.org" because Rootsweb mailing lists only accept data in plain text format. The information that she refers to includes, among other things, the call numbers that I provided yesterday. This is a very affordable alternative to purchasing the book! Sue -----ORIGINAL MESSAGE----- From: Johnson Company To: STilleman@satx.rr.com Sent: Friday, May 18, 2001 5:39 AM Subject: Pomeroy book Sue, I'm so sorry I haven't spoken up before about this information. I assumed it had already been discussed before I joined the list. I copied the following information from the LDS Family History Library Catalog available at www.familysearch.org. I have used the book while in Salt Lake City. The JSMB is an abbreviation for the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (I think) it is across the street from Temple Square in Salt Lake City. One floor of this building now houses all of the family histories available for anyone's use. So, if you write a family history and send a copy to the LDS Church, the original will end up here as well as on microfilm. Now for the good part. The Pomeroy book is available on microfilm or microfiche at all LDS Family History Centers worldwide. The great thing is that you can order the 2 microfiche and it costs you a total of $ .30 (yes, that's thirty cents!) and it will stay at that Family History Center forever!! The fiche is very readable and easy to use. Most Family History Centers have printers to make full page copies of whatever pages you want copied from the fiche. Rumors have been around for years that the Church will discontinue microfiche orders, so if anyone is interested in this book and doesn't want to pay the $100+, they should order the microfiche. The microfilm will cost $3.50 to rent and you will be able to use it for about a month. If you renew it two times for $3.25 each time, it will stay at that Family History Center. At the website mentioned above, there is a listing of all Family History Centers worldwide. Just look up the closest one, stop by and the volunteers there will help you fill out a short order form and collect your $.30. It takes a couple of weeks to get microfilm usually. My fiche order took a few months. Don't know why, but it was great when they called to tell me it was in. I'm sure this is more information than you wanted. Thanks so much for all your hard work!! You're wonderful. Georgia Johnson, Richardson, TX
A search beginning with the following site shows that the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy Carlock, 1929, can be ordered through any of the LDS Family History Centers: http://www.familysearch.org/. Be sure to bookmark this site. It is one of my favorites. This is also the site where you can find information on the family of Hans GERLACH and Anna Maria KUMMER, as listed on my home page under the report "User Home Page Genealogy Report: Descendants of Hans GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK". Hans GERLACH and Anna Maria KUMMER were reportedly the parents of the three GERLACH brothers who migrated to New York, New Jersey, and Virginia in the early part of the eighteenth century, and who appear to be the ancestors of most CARLOCKs, CARELOCKs, CEARLOCKs, and GARLOCKs, as well as some GARLICKs. The book is available either as a microfilm or a microfiche. Here are the numbers I found through the above-mentioned site: FHL US/CAN Film 1033974 Item 4, and FHL US/CAN Fiche 6331381. The last time I visited one of these sites, about 15 years ago, there was no charge to view holdings which were already present in that particular Family History Center at that time. There was a small fee to place an order to have a copy sent to that branch. As I recall, at that time it was only $5 per item, but that has probably gone up by now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I also recall something about that once an item was brought to a particular Family History Center, that item was able to stay there permanently. Again, it is not necessary to be a member of the LDS Church to use their libraries. Through the following site, you can easily find a family history site in your area: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp. For instance, when I looked in my home county of Bexar County, Texas, six locations appeared! I also found several other CARLOCK holdings available through the LDS Family History Center, including the following CEARLOCK book which may be of interest to those people descended from the branch of the CEARLOCK family that went to Johnson Co., Texas: "Cearlock, Carlock, Curlock, Lane, Odom and Summy family histories", by Marilyn Delores WARD LYNCH. I corresponded with Marilyn WARD LYNCH around 20 years ago. I have received a tremendous response so far to my query about libraries containing copies of the book "History of the Carlock Family", including several search engines and leads that I will pursue further in the morning. I'll make this short for now as I need to leave for work in a few minutes. Here are three libraries we know of so far: 1. A genealogy library in South San Francisco. (I need to pursue some leads about the name and location.) 2. The city library in Los Angeles, CA 3. The LDS Family History Center in Richardson (suburban Dallas), TX -- microfiche copy. (This probably means that the microfiche copies can be ordered through any Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ("LDS", "Mormon") library. Most major cities have at least one LDS library. You do not have to be a member of the LDS Church to use their libraries. I even found a branch in Kaiserslautern, Germany, when I lived there!) Please let me know if you know of any more library locations where this book is available. Sue Tilleman
This is in reply to Katheryn HADDAD's query to the CARLOCK list today about the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. The 2000 archives of the CARLOCK list contain several postings on this subject. Does anyone have any new information on this subject? I would also like to compile a list of libraries where copies of this book can be found, then post that information to this list. Does anyone know of any libraries which have copies of this book? This is in response to the following query from Judie BEATY which appeared on the Mecklenburg County, NC, GenConnect Query Forum today. I, too, am a direct descendant of George CARLOCK/CEARLOCK and Rachel LANDERS. Although it appears that George was a direct descendant of David CARLOCK who appears on page 436 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, to the best of my knowledge no-one has yet found proof of the exact connection. Some discussion of this matter can be found in the archives of the CEARLOCK-L@rootsweb.com list. See the following CEARLOCK Resources Page to access the above-mentioned archives, as well as other CEARLOCK resources: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/c/e/CEARLOCK/. This is in reply to the following e-mail which I received from Gary NORRIS yesterday. Page 471 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, says that Abraham Willard CARLOCK (twin s/o Abraham, Hanchrist, David), b. 7 Apr 1800, Hampshire Co., VA, "was known all over central Illinois as 'The Old Democrat'". As a young child, in 1803 he migrated with his father and twin brother George Osborn CARLOCK to Overton Co., TN. After taking an extended tour of Illinois in 1823, he returned to Tennessee and married Mary "Polly" R. GOODPASTURE. In 1827 he migrated with his wife and eldest child to Morgan Co., IL, then shortly thereafter to Dry Grove, McLean Co., IL. In 1836 he moved to White Oak Township. He remained there until his death, 19 Feb. 1884. The book says that Abraham owned a large tract of land near Carlock, IL. Pages 324 - 327 of the same book contains family photographs and a biography of Abraham Willard CARLOCK, including the fact that he was the grandfather of the author. Pages 325 - 326 say, "In politics he was an uncompromising Democrat, having cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson and his last one for Horace Greeley; in fact, he was so staunch and unswerving in his allegiance to the Democratic Party, that he was commonly and affectionately known everywhere as 'The Old Democrat' and any of his notes or legal papers would pass current if signed by this sobriquet." Abraham Willard CARLOCK is listed on my home page under the report titled "User Home Page Genealogy Report: Descendants of Hans GERLACH/GARLOCK/CARLOCK", Generation 5, Person 47. The story told what a strong Democrat he was. He was called the "Old Democrat". This Carlock was buried in a cemetery in which the Democrats were buried on one side of the road and the Republicans on the other. I believe he had "The Old Democrat" on his tombstone. That sounds like southern Illinois since that political party was much strong there. Do you remember who that Carlock might have been? Gary

I got this information from the Skaggs Cemetery records at the Lexington Genealogical Society in Lexington, IL. Isaac is also on the McLean County 1840 census as age 70-80. Isaac died March 5, 1844 and was born about 1769 in Virginia. His wife Rachel was born in Virginia also and died Sept 18, 1837. Their son Zebedee was born 1803 and died 1833. There is also an obituary of Amy Jones Carlock in the Daily Pantagraph microfilm section at the library in Bloomington, Illinois. I have a copy of it and it reads: Pioneers Pass Away Two Aged Ladies, Mrs Carlock and Mrs. Wakefield Close Their Eyes in Death On Friday evening, at her home in Kansas township, Woodford county, occurred the death of Mrs. Amy Carlock. She was born in Eastern Tennessee June 12, 1787, and therefore lacked two months of being 94 years of age. She was the widow of Reuben Carlock who died April 17, 1854, just thirty seven years to a day before Mrs. Carlock died. They were married December 15, 1816 in Tennessee and all of their children now living except John J., were born there. Mr. and Mrs. Carlock moved to Illinois and settled in White Oak Grove in 1827. The following are their surviving children: Winton Carlock of Hudson, John J. Carlock of Watseka, Mahala Brown, widow of Reuben Brown, and Mihill Brown, widow of James Brown. The funeral took place at 10 o'clock yesterday at Carlock and an immense concourse of people attended. Rev. G. W.
