    3. From: "Sherry Marsh" <[email protected]> To: "Susan Tilleman" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 05, 2001 10:19 AM Subject: Re: William P. CARLOCK, Union soldier from Fayette Co., IL Just to add a note to this, for what it is worth: William Shannon Carlock, b. 11-19-1837, d. 1-23-1863, (son of Benjamin Lakin Carlock, son of Job Carlock, son of Hanchrist Carlock, son of David Carlock who immigrated to the U.S. in 1725,) also served in the civil war. He represented the Confederacy, served in the 25th infantry regiment of Tennessee. William died in service on January 23, 1863 at Chattanooga, TN., at the age of 25. I have searched and searched for his cause of death, still undetermined, but I'm guessing - and I stress GUESSING - that he died of disease. I'm still working on the facts. William was the oldest brother of 8 children; I have a picture of his sister Sarah Emaline, and the youngest sibling Lafayette (a brother). The picture I have is a photo copy of the original, and was taken sometime before 1930, as both are very aged. Will share with any interested party. 3. References to CARLOCKs in "The Virginia Germans", by Klaus WUST, 1969: Page 102 - 103: "The three forks of the Holston, the Clinch, and the Powell all received a fair number of Germans. ... The first landholders on the Middle Fork, during 1774-86, were Hunchrist and Conrad Carlock, Peter Harman, George Spangler, and Henry Kounts. ... Many of the Wythe and Holston families spread into Scott, Lee, Wise, Dickinson, Buchanan, and Russell counties. Susong, Blabough, Engle, Fleenor, Hinkle, Kaiser, Kinder, Snider, Spangler, Hunsaker, Kinser, Rosenbaum, Brunk, Grabill, Hartsock, Rivercomb, Henderlite, Wassum, Copenhaver, Greever, and Carlock are names which all have a familiar ring in these westernmost counties of Virginia. When individuals and families moved on into the narrow valleys, they became dispersed and neither German churches nor schools emerged. Assimilation was an absolute necessity for them long before the communities in Wythe and Smyth gave up their cherished language and traditions."

    3. Aboard the ship "Samuel" which arrived in NY 1756 was ELIAS GERLACK It's funny that I have found five or six Gerlack/Carlock immigrations, but everyone seems to be trying to claim the one in the 1929 book. What happened to all the other Carlocks? Did they go back into outer space? I've seen this with other surnames. I'm about to turn into a pumpkin. Good night.

Do you think this is the same person as the Albert Monroe CARLOCK in your query? If so, I would very much be interested in information about Albert and his descendants. Also, did Albert and his descendants use the spelling "CARLOCK" or "CEARLOCK"? I am descended from Abraham CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (s/o George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK). 3. This is in response to the following e-mail which I received from Katheryn HADDAD yesterday. Here is the address for my home page: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/index.html?Welcome=990445746 Page 436 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, says that Conrad (s/o David) died without issue. I have no other information about Conrad other than what is in the book. However, page 437 says that the 1790 census only shows one daughter for Frederick, Jr. (s/o Frederick, David). I suspect that Frederick may have had a son. I am looking at Frederick, Jr., as one of the possible ancestors of my direct ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC. The other CEARLOCK line traces their ancestry back through George Washington CARLOCK (s/o John, Lemuel, Hanchrist, David), b. Apr. 25, 1812, Allen, KY, found on pages 438 - 440 of "History of the Carlock Family". Susan "Sue" Cearlock Tilleman ----- Original Message ----- From: K.
