This is in response to the following query which can be found in the archives of the Union Co., NC, U.S. GenWeb 1998 Queries at the following URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncunion/union_query98.htm. The text of that query reads as follows: "CARELOCK, BAKER John E. Carelock b 1852 who md Anna Baker and moved to Ga in early 1880's. He was one of 11 children of William A. Carelock b 1818 d 1862 and Beatrice Hamilton. Contact: Catherine B. North - [email protected]" Please refer to the following message which appeared earlier today on the CARLOCK and CARELOCK lists regarding the CARELOCK family of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Information which appears in Patty Barrett Emerson's ([email protected]) Jan. 7, 2001, posting which now appears on the CARLOCK Ancestry.com board matches some of the information which appears in Catherine B. NORTH's above-mentioned Union Co., NC, U.S. GenWeb query. Note that, if the information provided by Patty Barrett Emerson is correct, it appears that on pages 615 and 616 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, the author may have erroneously combined information for Samuel, Sr., and Samuel, Jr., listing the birthdate of Samuel, Jr., as the birthdate for Samuel, Sr. I have contended all along that it seems unlikely that George (s/o Frederick, David, Hans), b. 1740, would not have had any children born before 1785, as the book shows. If, as Patty Barrett Emerson states, Samuel, Sr., (s/o George, Frederick, David, Hans) was actually born in 1763 instead of 1795, this raises the possibility that my direct ancestor, George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, could also be a descendant of George (s/o Frederick, David, Hans). I believe that I may also be descended from David's son Frederick. I have not yet positively identified the connection between my direct ancestor George W. The first records I have for this George are in Warren Co., KY. I am very interested in your posting for the following reasons: 1. You say that David GERLACH/CARLOCK, b. 1674, Heidelberg, Germany, m. Anna Marie LISEMUS, 1714, and that Anna was b. ca. 1679, Heidelberg, Germany, and d. ca. 1725. What is the source for this information? 2. Hi, I am new this list since I recently found out that my husband is a Carlock descendant. George GRIMES who married Nancy CARLOCK Their daughter: Nancy GRIMES b. 1815 TN d. 20 April 1895 in Ray CO., MO. Married Ephraim McGLOTHLIN b. 22 Nov 1810 Ky d. 11 Nov 1872 Ray CO., MO (I do not know who the parents of Ephraim were) I beleive that Nancy and Ephraim married in TN. The first known son that I have for them is William who was born in 4 Feb 1834 in TN. I am assuming that Nancy and Ephraim married in Tennessee. They came to Ray County, MO around 1837 as Ephraim bought land 14 Aug 1837 in Ray County. I don't think that they came to Ray County with any of Nancy GRIMES family, but with other Campbell County, TN families. There are not any Carlock's on the 1830 to 1850 Ray County, MO census. The parents of Nancy are George GRIMES and Nancy CARLOCK according to a bible record posted on the KINCAID mailing list. George was b. ca 1772 and Nancy ca 1787. They lived in Campbell County, TN The tombstone for this couple in the Knoxville Cemetery of Ray County, MO states they were born in Ireland. I don't think that they both were. The 1881 History of Ray County states that Nancy (CARLOCK) was born in Germany. I also do not think that they are buried in Knoxville Cemetery. I think one of their son's erected the tombstone. This is just a hunch. The tombstone is too new to be erected in either 1844 when George died or 1865 when Nancy died. What I have on the children for George and Nancy is: -Sarah b. 1803 m. Peter VANBIBBER -Prudence b. 1806 m. Joseph CRAVENS -Rachel b. 1808 m. John YOAKUM -Elizabeth b. 1810 m. Moses YOAKUM - Henry C. b. 1813 m. (1) Lucinda FORD (2) Polly/Mary FLEMING (3) Sarah C. PETERS - Nancy b. 1815 m. Ephraim MCGLOTHLIN - James N. b. 1817 - John (Major) b. 1818 m. Nancy Young KINCAID - Barbara b. 1820 m. John S. THOMAS - James M. b. 1823 -Joseph C. b. 1826 m. This is in reply to the following message I received from Bill DAVENPORT ([email protected]) today with regard to the availability of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929. A great deal of discussion on this subject can be found in the archives of the CARLOCK list through the following URL: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/carlock.html. Following are copies of two of those postings. I agree with you that there are probably many errors in the book and that it should only be used as a guide. I have already found numerous typographical errors. The cheapest price I just found for the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, through this site was a used copy through a source called "Classbook". The cost was $78.10, plus shipping cost of about $4.95, bringing the total cost to about $83.05. This is in reply to the following message which I received from Tonia ([email protected]) yesterday. With regard to your question about whether or not my CARLOCK/CEARLOCK family of Fayette Co., IL, is related to the CARLOCK family of Union Co., IL, it appears that all CARLOCKs are related to each other unless there was an adoption somewhere in the line. I believe, but cannot yet prove, that my earliest identified CARLOCK ancestor, George W. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, is somehow descended from David GERLACH/CARLOCK, b. ca. 1679, Germany, who appears on page 436 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, possibly through David's son Frederick. David was one of three brothers who migrated to America. As far as I can tell, all CARLOCKs, unless there is an adoption involved, can trace their ancestry back to one of these three brothers. I do find a marriage record for your Moses CARLOCK through the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, 1763 - 1900, at the following URL: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/cgi-bin/archives/marriage.s. According to that record, Moses CARLOCK m. Mary S. DAVIS, 5 Dec 1850, Union Co., IL; volume I, page 271. However, I cannot find your Moses W. CARLOCK, b. ca. 1828, TN, listed in the book "History of the Carlock Family". The only four Moses CARLOCKs I have been able to find listed in the book are as follows. Unfortunately, the book is not indexed, so it is possible that I could have missed one or more Moses CARLOCKs. I need to add that my William Vance Carlock (II)'s oldest son was DAVID V. (Vance?). There was a David Carlock who was christened in Shenandoah Co. (formerly Augusta) 1741. Though some say he was the same one that was from Germany, that one was born in 1674 and christened in 1679. I am assuming that WV II named his first son after his grandfather. But who was his father? Abraham? Moses? Frederick? Conrad? Katheryn Haddad

In Shenandoah Co., VA. where many early Carlocks lived, a Mr. Vance owned much land in the mid 1700s. ============ NOTE: I obtained the info on WV I from Dick Dixon of Plano, Texas. ============ Does anyone have a will for Abraham Carlock in IL? Does anyone know where else his youngest son, William, would have moved besides Missouri? Katheryn Haddad
MARY JANE CARLOCK was born January 26, 1831 in Cape Girardeau County (Later Stoddard Co.), Missouri. She married first FRANKLIN WILLS in 1856, but he died in 1859. Now, there were either two Mary Jane Carlocks in that area (cousins), or M.J. had a quick and bad marriage. The "History of SE Missouri" says JOHN H. BLEDSOE, b. 1845 in TN. In 1868, he married MARY JANE CARLOCK, then moved to Johnson County, TX. In 1880 he moved to Dunklin County near Wayne Co., MO. In the mean time, Mary Jane Carlock married c. 1871 in Wayne County, MO to WILLIAM ARMSTRONG DAVIS. So either she left Bledsoe w/in 3 years and returned to Mo, he later going there himself, or she had a cousin by the same name who married him. Anyone else claim a Mary Jane Carlock out there? I will next send you my information on Mary Jane's father WILLIAM VANCE CARLOCK. There were two by that name! Katheryn Haddad
Can anyone identify the wife of George Washington CARLOCK, 1812 - 1862, (s/o John, Lemuel, Hanchrist, David, Hans) pictured on page 439 of the book "History of the Carlock Family", by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929? Was this his first wife, Kitty Virginia READ, or his second wife, Elvira SMITH? Sue Tilleman
I just discovered another good search engine called "GenCircles Genealogy Message Searcher". The URL for that search engine is: http://images.gencircles.com/message/searcher. Sue Tilleman
This is in reply to H. W. CARLOCK, Jr.'s ([email protected]) inquiry posted to the CARLOCK GenForum on July 6, 2001. In that inquiry Mr. CARLOCK said that his grandfather Hurbert Walker CARLOCK was born in a log cabin on display on Petit Jean Mountain, AR. Please see my posting earlier today to the CARLOCK mailing list regarding A.J. CARLOCK (1924 - 2001) who was born on Petit Jean Mountain. A copy of that posting follows. As far as I know I am not closely related to this branch of the CARLOCK family. For those of you who are not already aware of this, Ancestry.com recently purchased Rootsweb.com. In an effort to consolidate resources, they created the new Ancestry.com message board system which combines and replaces the old GenConnect message boards on RootsWeb.com and the old FamilyHistory.com message boards. The new boards are still "Gatewayed" to this mailing list, which means that postings also automatically post to this list. Unfortunately, the new boards do not indicate that the message is coming from the boards, so we will occasionally get postings to this list which appear as if we have jumped in the middle of a conversation. Furthermore, all seven previous categories of GenConnect boards have now been combined into one category. The new boards also require a log-in and password, which can easily be created free-of-charge. These new boards can be accessed through the following URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=main&r=rw. This in no way affects the GenForum boards, which are not connected with Ancestry.com. Unfortunately, I am unable to "Gateway" the GenForum boards to this mailing list, so they require a little more effort to keep up-to-date with current postings. The GenForum boards can be accessed through the following URL: http://genforum.genealogy.com/my/. As you probably already know, all of the Rootsweb mailing lists, including this one, are also archived and can be accessed through the following URL: http://navigation.helper.realnames.com/framer/1/262/default.asp?realname=RootsWeb&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Erootsweb%2Ecom%2F&frameid=1&providerid=262&uid=30003615. Rootsweb also has a search feature which can be accessed through the following URL: http://searches.rootsweb.com/. I also continue to use the "Related Links" section of my home page to list noteworthy links to other sources of information for this surname. The URL for my home page is: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/t/i/l/Susan-E-Tilleman/index.html?Welcome=994724276. Another useful search engine is the Genealogy.com search engine for the FamilyTreeMaker home pages. The URL for that search engine is: http://www.genealogy.com/ifftop.html.
